The Shocking News

1088 Words
It was a very drowsy morning in the convent and almost everyone was still fast asleep. Seeing that everyone was tired and there wasn't enough food to go around for breakfast, Mother Superior decided to summon sister Maria. “You sent for me, Godmother.” Sister Maria asked in affirmation. “Yes I did, I would love you to go to the marketplace and get some food.” Mother Superior said. Without further discussion, Sister Maria agreed to go to the market to get some food. She went almost immediately and as she approached the market, she heard people wailing and crying. She decided to choose a hideout to view what was happening carefully and quietly. She saw the people living around the market being terrorized. She also realised it was Stefano's men. “What's going on? Why are they rough handling the people?” Maria asked herself in so much pity. She decided to stay in the hideout and watch carefully to at least have a grasp of what was going on. The mass terror of the people was quite alarming. “Where is she? The lady with unique violet eyes?” The gunmen asked the people. “I don't know who you are talking about. Please…” they pleaded and echoed in one accord. The gangmen kept on inflicting pain on the people and asked them to get talking to avoid more of the torture. “Who is this lady exactly?” A man in the crowd asked. “She is Simon's daughter! The treacherous man and she must also pay for the crime her father had committed.” “What!” Sister Maria whispered in shock. “How is that possible?” She began to ask herself. The weight of what she heard made her decide to run back to the convent to share the news with Mother Superior. She ran back to the convent with all her might and in an unnoticed manner. Mother Superior saw Sister Maria running to her office from a distance. She was shocked and frightened because she never pictured that she would see a sister run. She immediately left the office and paced up to her. She said to her “Why are you running Maria?” “I saw them….” Maria was trying to explain without catching her breath. “It's fine, take a deep breath.” Mother Superior calmed her down. Sister Maria later affirmed being calm and ready to speak. “The KING knows that Teresa is alive and they are on the lookout for her.” Sister Maria broke down the news. “What! How is that possible? Who leaked out the information beyond these walls?” Mother Superior was in shock. “As we speak, they are terrorizing the people at the market side and I don't think the convent can be spared from such rot. Teresa isn't safe here anymore.” Mother Superior could feel her heart unstable as she heard the news and was disheartened too, she was so confused about what to do and she needed to act very fast. “Get the nuns together, ask Teresa to come to my office as well.” Mother Superior said. Sister Maria thought to herself, what for? But that wasn't the perfect time to ask questions. Teresa heard an aggressive knock on her door. A kind she had never heard before. It made her so scared that it shook her off her bed. “Teresa, you have to hurry to Mother Superior's office immediately.” Teresa was tensed as to what the matter may be but the only way to find out is to head to the office first. She rushed to the office and she met the other nuns gathered. Teresa was really scared remembering what she went through at detention, she never wanted to go back there again. “Come in, my child.” Mother Superior asked Teresa to come in, noticing she was staring from outside. Teresa walked in gently and Mother Superior was quiet for a few minutes because she was in so much pain from the news she heard. “Teresa, the convent is no longer a safe home for you.” Mother Superior said. It was so much for everyone to take in and everyone stood in awe. “Why? What’s happening? What did she do?” Everyone had a question to ask. Mother Superior hesitated then said, “The KING has found out Teresa is still alive and by law, she would also be penalized for the crime her father committed.” Teresa broke down in tears “No I did nothing wrong!” “Now isn't the time to cry and wail my dear child, it's the time to make a move for your dear life.” “But who are these people, Mother Superior?” “They are a mafia gang that dominates this community. It is headed by a very dangerous man called Stefano.” “Stefano?” “Teresa you have to hurry, let me get you some food so you can be on your way now.” Sister Maria chipped in. “On my way?” Teresa asked in confusion. She was filled with so many questions because she was confused about what was going on at the moment. “Yes, my child. They would be here any minute from now and I don't have the authority to stop them. They are very dangerous people.” Mother Teresa chipped in. Sister Maria went to prepare a food pack for Teresa’s journey and the other nuns went to inform the members of the convent about what was about to happen while Mother Superior worked on hiding Teresa’s documents. “They are by the gates.” One of the nuns came to pass the information to Mother Superior. “It's time, Teresa. You would be going through the basement. Find your way to Maldives Street close to the shore. There is a house painted in blue color, knock on the door and tell the house attendant you are from me, and she will take you to safety. I have communicated with her…..” Mother Superior said as she broke down in tears. While she was explaining all that Teresa needed to know, they heard a noise coming from the sisters by the gates. The gang had gotten into the convent. She bade Teresa Goodbye as she narrowly escaped through the basement. “Why me!” Teresa cried as she ran for safety.
