The City of Dreams and a Little Stubbornness

1090 Words
(Background: Sounds of a Mumbai local train, the rustle of light rain, followed by the rhythmic melody of ocean waves.) Narrator: After spending the night living through Pari’s past within the silent walls of that flat, the Mumbai sunlight felt strange to Shruti. Yuvraj’s words—“Pari is no more”—kept echoing in her ears. But she knew that before her university sessions began, she didn't just have to see this city; she had to finish this diary. Away from the shadows of Varsha and Yuvraj, she needed a quiet corner. (Sound of waves at Marine Drive and a light breeze.) Narrator: She took an auto to Marine Drive. The sea was calm in the early morning, though Mumbai’s hustle had already begun. Shruti started walking along the long promenade. Her earphones were on, and inside her bag lay the diary—feeling like a living, pulsing thing. The cool sea breeze brushed against her face. Shruti (To herself): Such a massive city. Millions of people. And in some corner of this city, a story lies buried that Varsha and Yuvraj are hiding from the world. 'Pari,' after reading about you, I feel like I’ve known you for years. Did this city embrace you, or did it cast you out? (Sounds of street food and shouting—"Bhelpuri le lo bhai!") Narrator: Wandering the streets of Mumbai made Shruti hungry. She had heard so much about Mumbai’s street food. She stopped at a small Bhelpuri stall. The spicy, sweet, and tangy taste was just like the mood of Mumbai—a little bit of everything! She then tried Vada Pav and Pav Bhaji. Those flavors held the true colors of the city, yet Shruti’s mind was still anchored to that diary. To escape the scorching afternoon sun, she sat on a bench under a thick, old Banyan tree. In the surrounding silence, she opened the page dated—August 12, 2002. (The Diary Entries—Written with a mature tone.) Handwriting (Pari’s words): Today, when I scratch at those memories of 2002, my heart sinks. That day. The day my little brother entered this world. A flood of happiness had hit the mansion, as if years of prayers had finally been answered. But my stubbornness... my innocent, foolish stubbornness outweighed everything that day. Today, I think—if only I had stayed home that day. (Sound of loud crying and feet stomping inside the mansion.) Narrator: In the large courtyard of the mansion, five-year-old Pari was rolling on the floor. Her clothes were covered in dust, her hair was a mess, and her screams echoed through the house. Pari (Screaming): No! I want to go now! I want to see my brother! Papa... you’re lying to me! Take me there! Papa (Frustrated): Pari, beta, try to understand. The hospital is very crowded; they don’t take small children there. Play with Grandma at home, and we’ll bring your brother back this evening. Pari (Thrashing on the floor): No! I want to go right now! If you don’t take me, I won’t eat anything and I'll just stay lying here on the floor! Narrator: That day, even the discipline of the mansion broke before Pari’s stubbornness. Her father, who remained stern before the entire village, lost to his daughter's tears. With a heavy heart and out of sheer compulsion, he agreed to take her to the hospital. (The silence of white hospital walls and the sharp smell of medicine.) Handwriting (Pari’s words): Those hospital corridors... where there were white sheets and a strange silence everywhere. I was scared, but the longing to meet my brother was greater than that fear. As soon as we reached the room where Mom was, my legs began to tremble. I couldn't understand how one tiny being could change the heartbeat of an entire family. (Sound of a door opening and the faint cry of a newborn baby.) Narrator: Inside the room, Mom lay on the bed, exhausted but with a strange peace on her face. Nearby, in a small cradle, that tiny soul was wrapped in muslin cloth. Pari rushed toward the cradle, but just as she tried to touch him, her father caught her hand. Papa (In a low voice): No, Pari, not yet. He is very small; he might get hurt. Narrator: That was all it took for Pari’s anger to flare up again. She felt like everyone was keeping her away from her brother. Pari (Crying): Everyone is mean! He’s my brother! I want to hold him in my lap! Give him to me! Give him to me! Narrator: Pari started rolling on the hospital floor. The doctors and nurses watched in shock. Mom, who knew every pulse of Pari’s nature, couldn't help but feel a mix of laughter and helplessness. She saw that Pari’s stubbornness would not be controlled by anyone else. Mom (Weak but loving voice): Pari... come here. Don’t lie on the floor, beta, that's a bad habit. Come here, sit by Mommy. Narrator: Sobbing, Pari went to her mother. Mom sat her up against a large pillow near the bed. Mom (Smiling): I am giving you your brother, but promise me—you will hold him very carefully. You are a big sister now, and big sisters take care of their brothers. Narrator: Pari’s eyes lit up. Mom slowly lifted that little angel from the cradle and placed him in Pari’s small lap. (A very soft and soulful music begins to rise.) Handwriting (Pari’s words): That moment. When his silk-like skin touched my palms. He was so light, as if a soul had descended into my lap. That milky face, those closed eyes. I held my breath, fearing that even the air of my breathing might hurt him. My happiness knew no bounds. That day, for the first time, I felt what it meant to have someone of 'your own.' I thought this brother would be mine forever, that we would play together. But the pages of fate were writing something else entirely. (A sudden gust of cold wind in the park; Shruti’s eyes fill with tears.) Narrator: Shruti noticed that the ink on that page was slightly smudged, as if tears had fallen from an adult Pari’s eyes while writing. Shruti’s heart began to sink. Shruti (To herself): That day in 2002, when everything was perfect... what could have happened after this brother arrived that caused everything to shatter? Why did Yuvraj say Pari is no more? Was this brother the cause of that destruction?
