Kris POV
Waiting with Kane in the car, I stare down the courthouse and look over my notes. He grabs my pen from my hand and I face him. Giving me a small smile, he hands me back the pen.
"You need to stop. Don't get in your head. You're good. Trust it." Surprisingly, his words hit me hard because they are the exact words I need to hear right now. I know I have a case, but knowing that Andrew did this makes my blood boil. He knows this is beyond what is acceptable.
"If it's the right thing to do, why do I feel so bad about it?" I ask my private thoughts out loud and immediately the regret settles in. Why did I just say that out loud?
"Because you are a lot better person than I am." We laugh in the car comfortably. Having been at this for the past three weeks, Kane has really opened up. At first, he hardly ever said anything to me. Nowadays, he jokes with me about serious things that I almost forget that I am speaking to him as a client. The strange thing is that it's not funny that I laugh so hard I pee my pants. It's a type of funny that makes this weight come off your shoulders.
"We will see about that." We exit the vehicle only to see Nora and Andrew walking in with us from the parking garage. You have got to be kidding me.
"Well. Well. Well." Nora's snooty attitude makes me suppress any eye roll. Hold yourself together. Andrew got a damn continuation on the case last week, meaning that we could be in it for the long haul.
Once the elevator opens to our floor, we all get out, but Andrew grabs my arm and yanks me to the side. I hold my hand up to Kane so that he backs off.
"This better be good, Andrew." He smirks at me and I shove his hand off of my arm.
"It's going to get ugly in there." Andrew's eyes run to my chest and stays there. This time I do a hard eye roll and point his head up to face me.
"Andrew, go." I hear a familiar voice from behind me. In a state of confusion, I turn back to see Henry come up to me.
"This isn't your case, Henry." Andrew grits back at him as Henry comes towards us. Henry puts a protective arm around my waist and pulls me back.
"Why don't you just take the hint that she's not interested?"
"Why can't you take the hint that you're not Ethan?!" Andrew says that too loudly. Everyone in the hallway looks towards us. Henry removes his arm from my waist. Kane looks pissed beyond belief and I just walk towards him to ignore this.
"Kris.." Henry tries to reach for me, but I ignore him.
"Don't." I point at both of them, but Andrew shakes his head at me. I scoff and walk away, but Andrew grumbles something that I am sure he didn't mean for me to hear.
"Maybe your stubbornness is why Ethan left you." I stop in my tracks and I am about to turn my heel to beat the s**t out of him, but Kane grabs my arm instead and pushes me to go around the corner. His hands are on my shoulders as I fight against him.
"I'm fine!" I bark at him, but he doesn't budge.
"Not here. You can't win here. Win in there." His blue eyes stare straight down into mine. s**t, he's right. I nod and put my hands to meet his on my shoulder. Staying there for a second longer than I should. My index finger links between his index finger and middle. Though I know it's wrong, it feels comforting. What the hell is wrong with me?
"Okay." Our hands drop to the sides. Now we are so close, I can tell that he wants to ask me about that interaction. To him, I am married and I'm sure what Andrew said only muddles that. s**t. Why do I care what he thinks about it?
"We have five minutes." Instead of asking, he peels back from me and lets me lead the way to the courtroom. The judge is still with his last case. Nora and Andrew walk in. Henry is close behind them and tries to come to me, but I don't want to talk to him. I don't want to talk to any of them. Kane steps in between Henry and myself. Giving him an apologetic glance, I hear the clerk call our case to start.
Kane POV
Who the f**k is that guy? I see a relatively attractive man come up and wrap his arm around Kris. Is that her husband? Kris lets him wrap his arm around her, so I can assume they are intimate in some way. Andrew makes this big comment about some guy named Ethan. Though I am curious, I don't push it.
Getting Kris to calm down before going into court, I can tell she is frazzled by Andrew's words. I get her attention right before we get seated.
"Do it." Her eyes are wide opened at me.
"Are you sure?" I nod at her and stand tall in front of the judge to see Kris demolish Andrew in court. Their firm is practically screaming and bitching about this case. The judge looks pissed off and I stand there emotionless to that man's world falling apart. Using that momentum, Kris pushes for the children to stay in my custody for the remainder of the filing. The judge grants it. Holy s**t.
As we are walking out of the courtroom, that man who was with Kris comes towards us. Kris stops and turns around, gesturing for me to go to the car without her, but I don't move from right next to her. She doesn't bother with it.
"I am sorry. I didn't-" The guy starts to say, but Kris interrupts him.
"Don't be. It's not your fault." Giving him a small smile, she turns again to leave. We make it to the parking garage and get in the car.
"You can ask." Kris says before I even start the car.
"No." It's killing me. I want to ask her, more than anything, but she doesn't want to tell me. She doesn't even look like she's okay.
"You're not curious?" I purse my lips together before turning on the car. Of course, I am curious, but there's nothing I can do about it.
"I am, but it's not my place." I get us out of there through the major media flashing their cameras. Once we are out of the spotlight and I take us back to her office, she doesn't get out of the car at first. Staying in her seat for a minute, I turn to her.
"Tomorrow is my day off." She doesn't turn to look at me. With her hand on the handle, she hesitates to open the door. f**k. Instead of staying there, I start the car again and drive. I hear her soft stirring sounds as she slowly falls asleep. Arriving in Long Beach, I stop at a discrete location.
When we arrived in Long Beach, the sun was high in the sky, but now the sun is about to fall below the horizon. I am emailing back and forth between clients and employees about the things I needed to do today. Getting so distracted, I don't realize that she woke up.
"How long have we been out here?" She stretches out widely.
"A couple of hours."
"Will you take me home?" Her tired voice lets out and I do as she tells me. Again, we are completely silent in the car. "Thank you." Kris' soft voice tells me as she breathes out harshly.
"I used to go to that spot when I wanted to be alone." I tell her and she smiles lightly.
"I won't tell anyone about your spot then."
"Use it, if you need to." Nodding, she gets out of the car to go into her condo.
Arriving back to my place, Kris sends me a text about a pickup time for the kids to start staying with me. Thank God. Nora will finally get her grasp off of them.
Despite being over the moon that the kids will finally be mine, I can't stop thinking about Kris. My thoughts are interrupted when the guys join me in the living room with a bottle of Cognac.
"Kris was amazing in there." Keegan makes a note of the court appearance. The four of them had to stay at the company but it was broadcasted so everyone knew what happened.
"She is really something." Hunter nudges me when I utter out those words.
"What is with you?" He calls me out and I can't seem to shake this feeling that something is wrong.
"Something about what happened before we entered the courtroom and then after makes me feel like something is wrong with Kris."
"It's her day off tomorrow. Maybe she just needs some space." Elijah shrugs it off politely, but I think it's something more than that.
"Who is Ethan?" I ask Keegan since he knows her more than the rest of us.
"Her husband." Keegan c***s his head at me with confusion. "Have you met him?" Shaking my head, I see that he shakes his head too when I c**k my eyebrow up to ask him the same question back to him.
"He's one lucky man." Hunter cracks a joke and everyone laughs except for me. They all start to stare at me intensely.
"Okay, dude. She's married and-"
"Andrew said that Ethan left her." I am met with silence. "I don't know how to explain it, but I have this feeling in the pit of my stomach that I need to check up on her."
"Are you sure it isn't because you found out she's available now?" I shake my head at them. They couldn't possibly understand. Her voice today after court didn't sound like someone who just won a major battle, it sounded like someone who had given up.
"Look. Give her a call and just check up on her if you are so worried." Keegan suggests and I call her, but she doesn't answer.
"Will you guys just come with me to her place to see if she is fine?" With curious eyes, they look at one another and just nod along. Hopping into my car, I drive us to her condo. Once we get there, I see that attractive man from the courthouse.
"Oh, it's Henry!" Keegan exclaims as he points to the guy that I saw.
"Who is he?"
"Some law school friend of hers. He's got some puppy love for her."
"How the f**k do you know that?" Liam pushes Keegan slightly.
"I saw him once come to the office when I was working with Kris. Jenny told me about him."
Parking the car, we get out to see that Henry is in a terrible rush to get into the elevator. We meet him there and all go up to the same floor.
"What are you doing here?" I ask him, but he looks nervously at his phone. That doesn't help this nervous feeling that I have. He doesn't answer my question but I have a feeling that he didn't even hear me ask it. The moment the elevator door opens, he rushes down the hall and that's when I see Kris on the floor with three of her friends trying to pick her up to go inside her place.
"What the-" Hunter says as we go down there to see what happened.
Kris starts slapping her friends away as she breathes hard. Her reddened face and slurred wordless groans tell me that she is drunk off her ass. Holy crap.
"I'm fine!" She screams out as she struggles to punch in the code to her door from the floor. Henry bends down to her, but she's not having it.
"Just get her up." Peter, I think his name is from the restaurant awhile back says to the others as they lift her up.
"I am fine!" Kris gurgles up and it looks like she is about to puke. Holy s**t. I have never seen her like this.
"Kris." I call out to her and all four of her friends look up at me and Kris can barely keep her eyes opened. She looks at me with her head c****d to the side. One of them punches in the code for her condo and she practically falls over. Grumbling, she crawls her way into her place.
"I got her." Henry says as he tries to carry her, but she pushes him off of her. Not thinking about it, I rush in after her and grab her face.
"Hey. Hey. Hey. I got you." I stare right into her painful eyes and she closes her them to start bawling her eyes out. Her breathing can't catch up to her. f**k.
