Chapter 18

2238 Words
*Trigger Warning* Kane POV Seeing that Kris' friends are here to take care of her, I felt no need to stay. I watched her sleep peacefully last night without sleeping myself. Looking around her place, I can tell that she has a place for everything, even her pictures. There's a picture on her nightstand of her and who I can only assume is Ethan. He has thick black rimmed glasses and a goofy grin. I won't lie I never pegged that as her type, but I know better than most that she doesn't judge a book by its cover. If she did, she would have never taken my case. Making it home, I take a hot shower before heading to the kitchen to grab a quick snack. I'm exhausted. It is almost 12 PM and I receive a text from Kris. "Nora wants to meet at your place to drop the kids off." She sure works quick. "Will you be there?" Realizing that she never specified whether or not she would be joining the interaction, I take note that I would feel uncomfortable if she wasn't here. I don't think I can face off against Nora alone. Though I hardly doubt that she will ever be able to manipulate me back to her, I would rather someone on my side. On that note, I should text the others to see if they can come over too. Once I have sent a message out to them, I get a response from Kris. "I can be." Kris leaves it to me to decide. The choice is easy. "Come over." "I will be there in about an hour." Leaving my phone on the kitchen counter, I take a look at the snack I got out but decide against it. Sleep is overwhelming me and I can't stay awake for much longer. Not bothering on going into my room, I lay on the couch and let the darkness take over. My doorbell rings, effectively waking me up. God, what time is it? s**t. As I am crawling up from the sofa, still groggy from my short nap, I hear my front door open and footsteps rushing in. "Kane?" Kris' panicked voice echoes down the hallway to the living room. "Living room." I remark back as I grab a glass of water. Her footsteps run into the living room. "Are you okay?" Her hair is tucked gently behind her ear on the left side while the other side is a bit ruffled up from running in here. God, she is beautiful, even if she doesn't know it. My thoughts are taken away when I realize she is anticipating an answer while headed towards me and fast. "Why wouldn't I be?" I question her back as she drops off her things on the kitchen counter and grabs my arm to take a good look at me. "I have been calling you for the past half hour and ringing your door bell. You never answered." Oh, that nap must have really done it for me. "I was taking a nap. Sorry." Gently letting go of my arm, I hate the fact that she's no longer touching me. "I got you some food, as a thank you of sorts." She smiles lightly at me with a bit of sheepish thrown in there. "Don't worry about it." I grab the bag of Thai takeout from the place that I like by her place. She really does have an eye for detail, practically nothing gets through her. "Thanks for this though." The front door opens again as I hear a bundle of voices coming from the hallway. That should be the guys. Hunter comes through the hallway first to see that we are sitting on the kitchen island eating. Coming straight for us, Kris gives them a light smile. "Thank you for last night, by the way. I'm sorry if I inconvenienced you all." Hunter wraps his arm around Kris' shoulder and I ignore the urge to throw his arm off of her. He whispers something in her ear and they laugh out loud for a bit. "Next time we are all drinking together." Hunter points at everyone, but Kris shakes her head adamantly. "I think I need a break from the drinking, but I will take care of you if you need it." She flirts back with Hunter. This time it isn't sly or wicked, it's with playfulness. A twinge of resentment lands on my chest as I watch the two of them get close with one another. How the f**k did that happen? Before anyone can comment anything else, Kris is dragged away with a phone call. She sure has a lot of them in this line of work, but that's the con of being wanted by so many celebrities that want to go through some s**t divorce. "Are you good?" Hunter tries to ask me as he can tell that I am agitated. As I am about to remind him of the rules, Kris marches back into the room hurriedly. "We have to go. Now." Her firm words forces us to look at her strangely, but she doesn't even bother with us. Kris already has her personal items and is headed out the door. I can practically feel anger radiate off of her. Catching up to her before she can get into her car, I slam the door shut to make her look at me with almost hatred splashed across her face. "What is it?" Kris can't look me in the eyes but breathes out harshly. "We need to go, Kane." Though her voice is softer than when she was in there, I can tell she is keeping something from me. "Now." Pushing me off hard, I get into her passenger seat while the other four get in the vehicle they came over in. "Kris." Pressuring her to give me an answer, I can hear the squeak of her grip on the steering wheel tighten. She is swerving through the lanes on the highway. "At least tell me where the f**k we are going." At this rate, Hunter will lose us. "We are going to St. Mary's." "The hospital? Why?" It gets eerily quiet in the car. "Kris, no bullshit. Come on." I text Hunter St. Mary's so that they can meet us there if we lose them while Kris doesn't seem to care about the laws of the road anymore. This is the last time she is driving me around that is for sure. "Nora. She-" Kris purses her lips together, unable to bring herself to utter the next few words. "What did she do?" I angrily growl at her. Nothing Nora does could possibly be good. "A neighbor called in a noise complaint and then called social services. Peter heard the complaint come in and recognized the address. He went with the cops to the house in question and they found Asher and Mason practically beat to death." "WHAT?!" Kris winces at my reaction hard. I can not believe that Nora would do this. Is she even a mother? "Nora is nowhere to be seen. Her neighbors think she went out for groceries or shopping like she normally does. Apparently, this is a normal occurrence since she has been there, but this time it got really bad." "Are they-" "Yes. They are alive and breathing. Peter brought them to the hospital personally and one of the best doctors in LA is examining them." I am practically shaking in the car with anger. I swear to everything that is good in this world that I will find Nora and kill her myself. How could she do this to them? Without noticing, I feel Kris snake her hand into mine as I cover my head with my hands to try and stop the shaking. Squeezing her hand hard, I get my breathing under control. Kris pulls into the parking lot of the place and calls Peter as we run inside the building. "Asher and Mason Bishops." Kris tells the nurse in the front desk, but they don't pay her any attention. One actually gave her a dirty look. Is she out of her mind? "The twins? You can't see them right now." A doctor comes by to give me that comment and I saw red. Grabbing a hold of his collar, I pull him up to the wall. "WHERE ARE THEY?" The entire ER gets very quiet as I feel Kris rip me off the doctor. Saying a string of apologies, she shoves me hard into a supply closet. "Are you out of your mind?!" She screams at me and I grab her shoulders and knock her up against the wall so that she is facing me. With our faces mere centimeters apart, I can feel her breath fan my skin. "I need to see them. I have to make sure they are okay!" I yell at her and she takes my screaming like it's not a big deal. "You need to calm down." Her soft voice tries to ground me but I am too far gone. "I can't let this happen again. I won't!" I punch the side of the wall and cause a shelf to knock down. A box from the top shelf is about to fall on Kris and I move her quickly against the door instead, protecting her from whatever is in it. She must hacek seen it coming to because I could feel her body panic against mine. Kris' hands are gripping at my shirt as she tucks her head into the knave of my neck. "Kane." Kris reaches for me again with her voice, but it's strained. "If you don't calm down, you are going to scare them. That is the last thing they need right now. Please." I look up at her and our eyes meet. f**k. She's right. Our eyes quiver for a moment before I release her and we get out of the supply closet to go find my kids. "Kris!" I hear Peter's voice call out to her. She runs to him and I follow closely behind. "Where are they?" "Getting an X-Ray." Peter hugs Kris rightly as we head into the room that was prepared for the twins. "How bad is it?" "We were lucky the neighbors called it in." Peter sneaks a peek at me to which Kris just gives him the go ahead nod. "They were severely dehydrated and bleeding through their winter coats. Doctor said if we had waited another fifteen minutes, they might have suffocated in that room." "Wait, what?" Kris remarks quickly, but I just pace around the room. "What do you mean by room?" f**k. f**k. I should have known better. I should have f*****g known. "He means room." I shudder out for Peter. He stares at me in an astonished manner. "The closet doesn't have AC." Kris' eyes widen before she realizes what I said. Damn it. "Mr. Bishops?" A different doctor from before enters the room and introduces himself before giving us the verdict. "Asher and Mason will be fine. We cooled them down and got them on some IV. Asher needed some stitches on his arm. Nurse will give you further instructions on how to take care of that. Mason's leg is bandaged up and Asher's back is also bandaged up." "When can we see them?" Kris asks quickly and stands next to me. "They are transferring to one of the rooms on the fifth floor. The nurse on that floor will direct you where you need to go. After night or two of observation, they should be going home. I am told that they were in the process of being relocated?" The doctor questions as he sees social services from behind him. "Yes." Kris responds to him and then gestures for us to take our leave of the room. "Nora is still nowhere to be seen. It looks like she left town. Her clothes are gone and so is her wallet, but she did leave her phone." One of the cops comes up to inform Peter as we stand there. That's why Nora wanted to come over at 3 PM. She was never intending to coming over. She just wanted me to suffer. If she had gotten her way, they would both be dead right now. "We will worry about Nora later." Kris guides me to the elevator. "We need to see if the kids are going to be okay first." With that, the elevator door closes, leaving Kris and me alone as we let out a breath before our eyes meet again. Not saying anything, we face each other to give one another a hug. The elevator door opens to Level 5 and we step out. The nurse guides us to the direction we need to go in and that's when I see them. My two precious children laying in bed with IV hooked up to them. "I'll go grab some water and some snacks for when they wake up." Kris smiles lightly at me and then starts to rearrange the chairs so that I can face both of them while seated in the middle. "Nora knew this was going to hurt me the most." I let escape. Kris stops exiting the hospital room door to turn and face me. "I knew she was going to do this."
