Chapter 9

*Trigger Warning* Kris POV It's a hot July day as I make my way into the office. I got the judge to sign off on a visitation before mediation. Nora was not happy about it, but it was fair since Kane never got to lay eyes on his children. The kids are getting dropped off at 10 AM today, two hours before Kane and the others are supposed to get there. I am not dumb enough to think that Kane is coming by himself. Getting into the office, I drop off the coffee that I picked up for everyone. Friday is the day that I bring coffee and donuts for everyone. It's a little pick me up before the weekend officially starts. As we start to munch on the donuts and coffee, I start our end of the week meeting, but then I see Nora and the kids from outside the building with Andrew, her lawyer. Figures that Andrew would be the one that would take on this case. As they are getting out of the car, Nora kneels down to talk to her children but her facial expressions appears to be making her kids uncomfortable. We are in the middle of the meeting and I stop to stare at them. The rest of my team follows suit and some c**k their heads as her demeanor towards them seems harsh. Being a divorce and child custody attorney, I also deal in juvenile court, so I have seen that type of reaction before, but from abused children. We are completely silent but look at one another as if we are thinking the same thing. One thing about the juvenile court is you kind of need a strong backbone to be able to bear the horrible treatment of some kids. It's hard working in this field because it truly breaks your heart sometimes. As they come inside, Jenny goes to greet them. "Well, I'm here." Nora's irritable voice rings out across the office. "And you're not Kane's lawyer?" She snarks at me, obviously upset that I would choose Kane's side over hers. "No, I'm not. At least, not yet." I c**k my head to taunt at her as I see that she is gripping hard at both her sons hands as they shy away from the rest of us. "Ugh." She lets out before bending down to her kids. "Remember what mommy said, okay? Mommy is just going shopping and I will be back." Pushing her kids slightly towards me, I open the door to my office to let them in, but not her. "The judge said he got until 5 PM when my office closes. I can drop them off if it's more convenient for you." She scoffs at me, like as if. "We will pick them up at 5 PM." Andrew smiles at me as he scans my body again. Seriously? "And I already fed them. Don't give them any food or soda. They're not allowed to have sugar." I nod at them as they quickly take their leave. As Andrew opens the passenger side door, I notice that he also snakes his eyes down her body. Creep. "You don't think...?" Mateo stands next to me as he trails off. We all stand and watch as they drive away. "I do." I grit through my teeth but I know my whole team can hear me. Clearly struggling, I breathe in and out deeply. "I really do not like that lady." Lilliana, my senior paralegal tells me. She's a bit older and used to work in social work, but she got tired of being beaten down by the legal system. The stories she would tell sometimes are too much to bear. "Are we not taking this case?" Jenny questions out loud, causing every single person to take a look at me. I close my eyes to think about it, but I am not saying anything. "It's a group discussion if we do." I let out. They know that they would have to pick up a lot of work for me when that week comes right between the holidays. "If it's really bad, I think we should take it." Mateo says and I see a series of head nods go around. "Let me just take a look, alright. If it's really bad, we will take a vote." Everyone nods at this. Taking another deep breath, I walk into the office and see that the two boys are standing at the corner looking at the floor. I kneel down at them and give them a light smile, but they won't look at me. "Hi, my name is Kris." Again, nothing. "Who is Asher and who is Mason?" "I.. I am Asher." Asher shudders after hearing his own voice that I blink back hard at them. "This is Mason." "Are you thirsty?" I lead them towards my mini-fridge. "You can pick something to drink." They both shake their heads. "How about you guys take off your jackets? It's very hot today." Their eyes start to panic and wander to one another, shaking their heads profusely. "N.. N.. No, we are okay." Mason says and I try my best to smile at them, but I swallow hard. I grab a Coca-Cola from the fridge and pour out two glasses. "Whatever you do in this room, no one will ever know. We can see out there, but they can't see in here." I hand them the two glasses and they hold onto it and look at one another, but do not take a sip. Leading them to the couch, I turn on the tv to the Nintendo Switch that I keep in here. Their eyes light up a bit, but then they remind each other to not look up. They set their glasses down and I sit on the coffee table opposite of them on the couch. "Do you want to play?" I hand them both a remote control and they nod silently but eagerly. They each get a controller and I put on Mario Cart for them to play. Though they don't seem to know the game that well, they are quick to learn it and eager too. At one point during the game, Mason looks at the Coca-Cola glass and gulps down. I know he wants it, but his instincts are telling him no. He looks up at me staring at him and quickly gives up the idea. "Take a drink. No one is stopping you. I can get you some water too." Mason looks over at Asher and they stare at each other with hopeful eyes that I hold back hugging them, not trying to push away any leeway they are already giving me. Before they turn back towards me, I hear some loud grumbling. They're hungry. She said she fed them. They sound and look absolutely famished. "Did you eat this morning?" I ask and they start to nod profusely once again. I gulp down before asking the next question. "What did you eat?" "Cereal." They say in unison, almost too quickly. I don't believe them. "What kind of cereal?" "Cheerios." Again, they say as if they were told to repeat those words. I grip hard at the sofa and nod at them. "Continue playing. If you want a different game, choose a different game, okay? I am hungry, so I am going to order some lunch. Do you guys want any?" They hesitate at this, but they slowly shake their heads. I close the blinds from the office so that they can't see out there. Walking out of my office, I let out a deep breath when the door is closed again. My team eagerly awaits me and I put a hand out to stop them. "Someone get me some McDonalds, just order the whole menu." "On it." Mateo walks out the door as I groan out in frustration. "How are they?" Lilliana asks. "They're conditioned. That's for sure." She looks pained when I say this. "Kristiane.." Lilliana uses my full name when we talk about something serious and I just nod. "When Mateo comes back, I am going to see. If it is what we are thinking, then yeah." I can't even say it as I am disgusted by Nora's behavior. What did Kane see in her? I am hoping that Kane would be a better parent, but I wouldn't know. Keegan is a great father, but that doesn't mean his friends are. "What are you going to tell him?" Jenny asks me straight up, knowing that I am going to have to tell Kane the truth. It is better coming from me than the kids seeing his initial reaction. "The truth. There's no way around it." I let out as I go back inside the office to see that the two kids took off their outer jacket and drank half of the coca cola. Good, at least they're getting comfortable. When I walk in, they gulp at me. "It's okay. Play your game. Don't let me stop you. I will be at my desk working." I smile at them and then remove my heels. They c**k their heads at me. "Shoes are so uncomfortable. Feel free to take your shoes off and spread out on the couch." With that, I go towards the back of the office and watch them from behind. After another ten minutes or so, they finish up their soda and I can see Asher eagerly looking back at me, wanting to ask me something but not daring to. They whisper amongst themselves before Asher hops off the couch and comes up to my desk. I turn my chair to face him. "Did you need something?" I smile lightly at him and he gives me a shy smile. "Can we have more?" He hands the glass to me and licks his lips. I nod at him and go with him to the mini-fridge. Coddling Mason to come over as well, I open the fridge. "What shall we have?" Mason's eyes go wide in the fridge and points towards a Fanta. Asher points at a Sprite. I gesture at both of them to grab it for themselves. "If you want more, open this fridge up and get some more." I hear a knock on my door. That has to be Mateo with the food. With the enormous amount of smell that comes from McDonalds, I am sure that it will urge the kids to eat something, especially now that they trust me a little. "Can you not tell mommy?" Asher whispers at me, causing me to take a look at him. I smile and nod at him. "Nobody will tell your mommy anything." I look both of them in the eyes and I can feel a sense of relief flush over their eyes. "Now, tell me the truth. Are you hungry?" They nod profusely and I gesture them to take a seat at the couch again. I get to the door and they watch me carefully, wondering what I am up to. When I open the door, Mateo comes in with bags and bags of McDonalds. "Here's lunch!" Mateo exclaims excitedly and I laugh at his macho facade. The boys do too as their eyes widen at the food and I am sure that their stomach is growling with hunger, I know I am just at the smell. Now my office is going to reek of it. Mateo comes over to the door where I am and takes a look over the kids. "Go. I will let you guys know." I reassure him as I shut the door behind him. Screening my eyes through the bags of food, I look at them and sigh dramatically. "I don't think I will be able to finish all of this food." I put out another disappointed sigh before opening one of the bags and begin taking out the food. "Do you guys want to help me?" "Can we?" Mason is on the edge of his seat and hungrily looking over the bags, scanning for food. "Yes, of course. And your mommy will never know. Pinky swear." Putting both my pinky out, they both pinky swear with me before we start digging in. The rate that they are trying to consume their food and their hungry moans from warm food makes my heart ache. "I like you." Mason beams at me and I laugh at him before noticing that he is getting sauce on his sleeves. I put down my burger and I point at his sleeves. "Honey, you are getting sauce all over your sleeves. Do you want to roll it up?" He looks at his sleeves and gets nervous. "Oh, no. Mommy will know." Asher exclaims and gets scared. "Hold on, I have laundry here. We can get it cleaned and she won't know." I tell them. Mason takes off his long sleeve and I see his chest is full of scars and bruises. Handing me the shirt, I just blink before quickly looking away. He is going to need another shirt. I look inside my small closet and see a small t-shirt that I give to him. "Mason." I give him a sweet smile that he returns. "How did you get those bruises?" "Because I am bad." Fighting back some tears and just frustration in general, I c**k my head in confusion at him. "What do you mean?" Asher finishes for him. "When we are bad, we need to learn our lesson. And we are always bad." They both get really saddened by this and I want to reply to them, but Jenny buzzes me instead. f**k. They're here.
