Kris POV
Damn, he is good. Being in court all the time means that I need a pretty strong poker face, so he definitely is figuring me out in the short amount of interactions we have had with one another. Simply, I nod at his gesture and he lets out a breath.
"We will talk about the terms when they leave, but for now, I am going to repair some damages." Kane turns to me and raises an eyebrow in my direction.
"Damages?" I smile wickedly at him.
"You'll thank me later."
"I have no doubt, Ms. Warren." This feels more like him, so I give him a polite nod before exiting the office.
"Mateo!" I yell out to see that he is doing a deep dive on the internet.
"Already on it, Kris." He yells back at me as he takes a hard sip of his coffee.
"Give it to me." I stand beside him.
"I got the major media productions to take the story out of circulation for 24 hours for an inside story of Mr. Bishop's side. The story will die out from the smaller media productions." Nodding along, I know this is Mateo's forte and I would never tell him how to do his job.
"What are we doing about Nora telling her side?" He stops typing to look up at me, clearly annoyed.
"She is very persistent about this going global. Andrew is taking her to the news outlets right now." I breathe in hard and think about what the next steps we need to take to get this under control. If this story doesn't die down soon, Kane and his company are screwed.
"Let me know if anything happens." Mateo nods at me as I make my way to Lilliana.
"I am already petitioning for more visitation rights. Now, I am working on Nora's background, but it would help to have more information." I squint at her screen before sharing my news.
"Kane said that he caught her sleeping with his relatives. They can't be the only ones. Find people who can corroborate that story. Find where she was working to make enough money for two kids. If she chose to only reach out now, she must have had a supply of money to go through and got cut off."
"Do you want a paternity test?" I bite down on my bottom lip. About to say something, I am interrupted.
"No." Kane's chilling voice comes through from right behind me. How does he keep sneaking up on me like that? "They're mine. Hunter looked over the paternity test with a doctor. It's real."
"How are they?" I change the subject to let Lilliana work on what she needs to. Leading him back towards my office, he looks hard down at me.
"They're better now." His rough hands ruffle through his hair. "Do you think I could take them out of here?" I hesitate. They technically can't leave my sight and leaving the office means that I would have to leave too.
"I would have to leave with them."
"You don't trust me." I sigh out.
"No. It's not that. If the courts knew that I left you alone with them to go somewhere, it would make matters complicated. Nora could petition you to never get visitation while we are dealing with custody rights. It would make you seem like a flight risk and I assume you want full custody."
"Fine." He nods reluctantly, but I can tell he wants to leave.
"We are petitioning for more visitation as we speak. Let me do my job." Urging him to believe me, he suddenly becomes transfixed with me.
"Why did you change your mind? I doubt time has suddenly became available to you." Staring him hard in the eyes, I try not to completely shudder at his hard gaze.
"It's personal." I let out strictly and with warning tones. Before he can utter another word to me, the office door swings open and Hunter comes out to drag Kane back in.
"Kane. Come on, spend some more time with them." Hunter playfully pushes him to spend more time with the twins. Without a second though to myself, they go into my office and I decide to stay out here. I need to get a handle on things and have Jenny draft up my usual contract. We aren't going down from this fight.
Kane POV
4:45 PM rolls around and I can practically hear time running out with them. Kris got them some dinner, thankfully. I nearly forgot to feed them before handing them back to Nora. That would have been detrimental. She made sure not to give them too much so that they didn't see too full when Nora saw them again. Another thing I probably wouldn't have thought of. I wonder how many of these situations she has been in.
Kris is now in her office typing ferociously on her keyboard and has been for the past two hours. Whatever her and her team are doing, it seems to be working. Hunter said that our stocks have stopped dropping at the heavy rate they were going, which is a good sign. I have no doubt that it's her at work.
Standing up from her desk, she comes over to Asher and Mason. Dismissing the others, she takes a seat opposite of Asher and Mason. They seem to absolutely adore her. Even though we were alone together most of the day, they didn't seem nearly as comfortable until Kris came back into the office.
"Asher. Mason." She draws their attention. "Your mommy is going to come pick you up soon." They nod with long faces that makes me curl my hand into a fist yet again. It's killing me, knowing that they are going back to her.
"Can we stay here?" Asher's warm blue eyes look at Kris for approval, but she shakes her head sadly.
"We'll be good!" Mason adds to Asher's question, trying to appease her.
"You both are good." Kris reassures them with a light smile. "Very good. I wish you both could stay, I do, but we will see each other again, okay?"
"When?" Mason looks nervously at her as she pinches her lips together slightly.
"Soon. And I promise we can go somewhere more fun than this." I see her tighten her hold on their hands just enough to provide comfort to their insecurities. "How about the beach?"
"Promise?" Asher's eyes yet again light up. Kris puts two pinky fingers up and pinky swears with the kids.
"Now, if mommy asks you what happened today, what are you going to tell her?" Kris aids Mason to take off her shirt and put on his original long sleeve that they got washed up.
"That we sat on the couch and did nothing." Asher gestures for Mason to agree.
"You can tell your mommy you were good boys today." Kris gives a warming smile to the boys as they give her a tight hug. I have spent the whole day with them and they are still not at that point with me. She already told me what happened when they got here, but I refuse to believe she is that good at garnering their trust in such a short amount of time.
"Where are they?" The shrill of the voice makes a cold chill strike down my back. Nora.
Kris ushers for the twins to get out of the office, but looks towards the rest of us with dead eyes that tell us to stay in her office. The door closes and I can see that Nora is gripping the shoulders of our sons tightly, too tightly. f**k.
Once Nora leaves with her lawyer, the rest of Kris' team comes up to her and they seem to be talking about something, though I don't know what. The employees take their leave too, with the exception of Jenny at the reception desk. Coming back, her hand gestures us to take a seat as she gets back into her chair.
"Kane, I need your permission on paper that they can be here and you are letting them gain full access to whatever needs to be said or done to get this case finished as efficiently as possible." She gets straight down to business. That's hot. I scribble down my signature on her confidentiality agreement, not even bothering to look over it. My instincts tell me she's reliable.
"When can I get visitation again?" Kris takes back the agreement to pull out a much larger document.
"At this rate, most likely next week." She still isn't looking at any of us as she navigates something on her computer. "That is the contract. You are welcomed to read it but most of it is pretty standard except for my five non-negotiable rules." This time she takes her hands off the keyboard and looks straight into my eyes.
"Non-negotiable?"
"Yes. Keegan knows most of them, but I will tell you all of the rules and why I have them in place." Leaning forward to her desk, she offers me to look through the contract as she speaks. "First, don't lie to me. If I ask you something, I want an actual answer. My job is to help you and I can't do that if we don't have some form of mutual trust. And in return, I will also never lie to you. Whatever is said between us, all of us, will remain confidential."
"That seems fair enough." Hunter chips in and I nod to agree with him. Without trust, I don't think this would ever work.
"Rule Number 2. Tell me everything even if you don't think it's relevant. Child custody court is brutal and any small detail that comes into light could be major if put in the right perspective. I don't like to be blindsided if we can help it." I nod to agree and for her to continue.
"Rule Number 3. My team can take matters into their own hands if need be." I give her a raised eyebrow look. Her team? "Kane, I already have Lilliana, my senior paralegal, call up private schools on your behalf to enroll Asher and Mason. They have waitlists normally, so the earlier we start the better. This might seem trivial to you, but to a judge, this shows that you are diligent in putting your kids first. I will not go through your channels of secretaries to do things that I can successfully do from this office."
"Agreed." I tell her as I now understand why Keegan was able to win his case. Kris thinks of everything. I will say that I am thoroughly impressed.
"Rule Number 4. Your lifestyle is for me to dictate, at least for the time being. That means no parties, no strange women in your home. We may have to call one another at three in the morning on the weekday."
"That's fine." With all of this going on, that is the last thing on my mind.
"I wasn't finished." Kris is careful as she continues. "Your home will be redecorated and possible renovated. It can't look like a bachelor pad to the social worker. It has to look like a home where you can actually raise two kids."
"I didn't even think about that." Elijah peers wide eyed at the rest of us as Kris simply nods in acknowledgement.
"Rule Number 5. This one, Keegan, you never had. Two weeks from now I will be gone for 24 hours. Do not reach me and instead reach out to this team if you need anything."
"Why will you be gone for 24 hours?" Liam wonders for the rest of us as Kris breathes in and out slowly before giving us her answer."
"Personal reasons. And normally, I would never take cases during this time of the year, I am making an exception for this particular case. Usually, I am gone for the week, but I am going to do my best to keep this under for 24 hours."
"I don't care." I finally say. "If you believe that your team can handle whatever is necessary on the day you are gone, so be it."
"They will be." Kris' words assure me enough and I nod to her that I agree with her terms.
"What now?" Hunter draws all of our attention towards Kris.
"Sign the last page of the contract and then we can officially get started."
