Chapter Two
A month has passed by and the two admire their newfound creation in the workshop. It’s not much to look at but should be effective. A comfortable looking hospital bed with life support system dominates proceedings except for a strange looking helmet attached to a black box reminiscent of one featured in the classic silent film Metropolis. The other main gadget is a weird spinning globe spewing out words. Lots of times, planets and geography charts adorn the surrounding walls.
Michael and George look at each other and George is the first to break the silence, “I guess we should see if it works. So who is going to be the guinea pig and where are they going to visit?” Michael smiles, “Some might say we should take this opportunity to eliminate Hitler or something very worthwhile but I say let’s have some fun first and go through history having s*x with the world’s most beautiful and interesting women. Once we’ve had our fun I’m sure there will be time left over to then save the world.” Georges laughs, “Trust an Italian to think of s*x first. However, as we are at the testing stage, there's no point in getting too ambitious to begin with, so I agree let’s have some fun first. it’s also worth remembering that our bodies won’t enjoy the time travel only our minds. So who is going to make the first trip and where?”
Michael puts forward his solution, “I think we should flip a coin to see who goes first. I also think you forget that the mind is the most important s****l organ there is apart from the obvious”
George flips a coin and wins the toss. “I think I’d rather like to visit Queen Elizabeth the Tudor Queen first. I’ve always had a thing for her and I often wonder if she’d not been assassinated if she would have made a great Queen and England may have become a great country rather than just a colony of Spain.”
Michael moves towards the strange spinning globe. “I guess we first better try out my grandfather’s special ready reckoner and look at all the permutations that might occur if we stop her from getting assassinated.” They type in some information into a computer and the globe starts going multiple colours spewing out multiple bursts of information which are then fed back into the computer. They pick up on the one that says if the assassination fails the Spanish may send an Armada to crush England but Francis Drake’s skill and some mysterious source could destroy the Armada and Queen Bess rules supreme to a ripe old age. George nods with satisfaction; “I quite like the sound of this outcome we English have never been great lovers of the Spanish they look down on us like we are up-tight perverts or something. I doubt you have much love for them either as they see your country as a land of pickpockets and gangsters. I wonder what this mysterious source is though. Do you think it might be us interfering with history?” Michael is quick to reply, “I think it’s a bit late in the day to be worried about changing history. Whatever we do, providing that this machine works, it will change history in some form or another. I thought that was the point of this exercise.” George still looks a little nervous, “Now that reality has hit home I’m not 100% sure if we should be doing this after all.” Michael is quick to volunteer, ‘I’ll go first if you don’t fancy it. Look at it this way, to coin an English phrase; you get to shag the most beautiful women the world has ever seen. I can’t see that changing history. You said yourself that the possible outcome we just saw for your country was for the best. I’m sure neither of us would change anything for the worst, so think positive, it will all be good.” George nods, “Everybody knows that Spain ruled an Empire and had the largest Armadas and England was just small fry back then so something like this happening would be about as likely as my cleaning lady Margaret Thatcher becoming Prime Minister. So I’m not sure I could change anything anyway.” Michael enquires, “So have you done your homework? Don’t forget the other requirement of time travel is to be DNA linked to someone from the time you want to visit or you can’t go there.” George nods, “Yes in anticipation of my first trip I was up all last night checking through my ancestry records via the net for times and places and I do have some family I’m DNA linked to at that time but didn’t have enough time to find out all the facts so not sure which family member I will drop into.” “Ok let’s do it”, says Michael enthusiastically.
A few hours later George is rigged up to the life support and Michael places the helmet on his head. He then injects him with some sleeping serum and turns on the oscillator and enters a number of coordinates into it. After a few minutes George shudders violently and then goes limp. Michael gets worried and checks his vital signs, which appear to be ok and continues to monitor George.
