Of the eight wings that formed Meadowbrook’s octagonal architecture, seven of them were identical, comprised of private and semi-private cells, washrooms, and showers. The other contained all the common areas—a mess hall, which was also an occasional movie theatre, concert or lecture hall, a library, laundry facility, gymnasium, chapel, infirmary, all the administrative offices, classrooms, visitation rooms, and two holding cells for prisoners waiting to be transported to court. The eighth wing was also the only wing with a basement which housed twenty, usually half-filled, cells for quarantined and segregated prisoners.
All eight wings opened up onto the playground. The only wings which prisoners were permitted to enter were the wing in which their cell was located and the eighth win
