Few of the other patients did. The light from the windows in the corridor indicated morning had well and truly begun. Kaiya looked around at the ward, watching as a few of the patients ate their breakfast. Most had finished, placing their trays on the inbuilt bedside cabinets that only stood by the beds that were normally present. One of the men passed his tray to his neighbour, who took it willingly and placed it on top of his own. A few of the men glanced at her with a nod, but most ignored her presence. Four of the men were having an open conversation about the quality of the breakfast menu, the rest of those present chuckling from time to time. “The bread could have been heavier,” one of them said with a grin. “It had none of that crunch I enjoy so much.” The men murmured their amu
