Amelia shared a smug look with Jerome. Kaiya glanced at them, feeling an immediate sense of ignorance. Amelia had never mentioned anything about delegating her responsibilities. She had always just assumed Amelia was the only point of contact for those like her hosting Nymian soldiers. “What was he like?” Jerome asked. “The south gate bomber.” All eyes turned to Kaiya, who licked her lips in hesitation. “Quiet,” she said. “Almost never spoke. Just smiled. Nodded. He was very polite, like that. But he spent all his time looking at maps, making bombs, that kind of thing. Sometimes I’d wake up early in the morning, and he’d be there at the dining table. I used to watch. He would just smile and go right back to it. And then he disappeared. I didn’t realise he hadn’t planned on coming back.”
