She fell silent, a canister of tear gas slamming into her head. Kaiya watched in a frozen moment as Amelia stumbled on the platform, eyes wide in surprise, then fell. Her head smashed against the side of the fountain, and she lay still beside it, blood beginning to coat her face. Kaiya rushed forward, pushing past stunned onlookers, Jerome by her side, and she knelt beside Amelia’s body, trying in vain to wake Amelia from her final rest. Kaiya gazed into the martyr, and the martyr gazed into her. Any semblance of restraint fled the town square. The crowd charged in multiple directions. Protestors threw themselves at police. More canisters fell, and Kaiya coughed as a cloud of gas erupted nearby, gleaming in the floodlights and shrouding dark figures. Shots rang out, but they reverberat
