Kormac’s mother should have done the same. Kaiya would never forget that failure. “I feel… strange,” Kormac said, pausing as they ambled down his street. Kaiya’s heart had been thumping along harder with every step towards his front door. “Why?” she asked, grateful for a few snatched moments before the confrontation, and the possibility of avoiding it altogether. “I don’t know,” Kormac said, frowning. “Nothing makes any sense.” He started walking again and Kaiya pondered what he had meant. They stopped in front of the crimson, newly-painted front door, and Kormac’s hand tightened against her own. She gazed at him, smiling, and pressed the doorbell.
