Zelia “Ship!” A sailor comes running to me where I am fetching water. “There is a ship on the horizon.” “Did they see our fire?” I hurry towards him, anxious to get to the beach. The freshwater is all forgotten. “I think so,” he smiles from ear to ear. “We added more wet leaves and the smoke signal cannot be missed.” “Well, let us go see,” I pull up my dress and start running towards the beach. My heart thudding in anticipation. It has been nearly four weeks on the island, and this is the first time that a ship is passing. The rest of the people are already gathered on the beach, all eyes on the ship. Cautiously, I watch it come closer. What if it is another pirate ship? They will surely kill or capture us to sell on the slaves market. I close my eyes; I cannot deal with that again.
