He looked at me, expecting an explanation, but I gave none, because I was shocked. My heart fled into my mouth making it impossible for me to drop a statement.
“You are Damien’s sister?” he asked as he sat down. I couldn’t believe he was here with me. In this same room. He scrolled me from head to toe and it felt so cringe. I bent my head low so that our eyes wouldn’t meet. He didn’t utter a word. I brought down my crossed leg and closed it. He stared at it. I felt embarrassed. I couldn’t even say anything.
“So, you could wear this?” he said as he looked at me. There was something different about his face. His face was lit like a candle light that was meant to glow till dawn but now, he was straight forward and mean.
“It’s not really it. Damien and I got into a heated argument about me not being able to be a baddie, so I just wanted to prove him wrong” he smiled.
“You’ll never be a bad girl, Jasmine”
“But I can dress like one”
“Anyways, shouldn’t be having this conversation with you, you are a minor”
“I am 18”
“You are still a minor to me”
“And why so?” he opened his mouth to speak but still shut it. He got up to take a glass of water.
“Oh, I see why you don’t want this conversation with me. That’s because you can’t handle my softness. Speaking of softness, I’m not even soft. You are just a weak, soft elite. Probably a daddy’s boy”
He looked up from the glass cup. His eyes pierced deep into my soul. I could feel his eyes saying, “You’d regret making that statement” I wanted to quickly apologize but someone barged in.
“Dice. What’s up, man?” Caleb said as he shook hands with Dice. Caleb was Damien’s classmate in high school. The two engaged in discussions that my ears weren't just interested in. Like, where the hell is Damien? During their conversations, Dice threw glances at me. Feeling uncomfortable, I got up and left for the balcony.
“I’ve noticed your eyes on her. You like her?” Caleb asked.
“Have I ever been in love?”
“Well, your eyes say it all” he chuckled. I felt my heart sink to the bottom of my stomach. I thought something was going on. Why did he act as he did? Why was I hurting this much? It didn't matter right?
“Jas, are you ready to go? Where’s Damien?” Caleb asked.
“No idea. He went to see Amelia”
“He is still with that b***h” Dice said and they both laughed.
“I’m going”
“Without Damien?”
“Yeah, I have something important to sort in Lèman”
“You are attending Leman?” Dice asked. I didn’t bother answering the question.
“Bye”, I said and left.
************
I stood in front of this school called Lèman Manhattan Preparatory School.
From the entrance, the school feels more like a luxury corporate building than a typical high school.
As you approach, you see a modern glass-and-stone façade, with clean lines and a quiet, upscale vibe. The entrance doors are sleek and reflective, often guarded or monitored, giving it a secure and elite feel.
Inside, the lobby opens into a bright, elegant space—marble or polished floors, soft lighting, and a reception desk where visitors check in.
Students in neat, stylish uniforms or designer outfits pass through confidently, some speaking different languages, reflecting the school’s international and high-class environment. I got into my class and found them having Global Politics. I sat in one of the empty seats I could find at the back.
“So, it seems we have a new student. Miss, can you do us the honour of introducing yourself?” I stood up with all eyes on me. I took a deep breath then spoke;“I go by the name Sinclair Jasmine. My friends call me Jas” Murmurs caressed the environment.
“Order. Silence everyone” the teacher called out. The class came back to order then he asked, “Do you care to share your future career with us?”
“Law. I want study Law”
“That’s very dope. You must be intelligent then” one of the girls’ I later learnt to be Rose said.
“Not all intelligent people study law. I doubt she can beat Milo”
“No. No. You don’t do that to a new girl” the teacher said. They were indirectly making fun of me and I knew it.
“Later, you give your name to Milo, he is the class president and head boy of your set. Milo, do well to add her name to the IB group. Make sure you submit your assignments in our next class. Have a nice day”
“Thank you Mr. Reed” everybody chorused. I sat down on my seat and stared at my phone.
“Hey, I’m Amira”
“Hey”
“Come on, don’t be shy” I chuckled.
“Is it that obvious?”
“So obvi my love. Come on, I’ll show you around”
“Now?”
“Yeah. Come on” I followed her. She showed me all around. From kindergarten to middle school and high school.
“Here’s the boarding house but not every student stays here. I personally live in my own apartment. My parents live in California so I only go to visit during summer holidays. Where do you stay? Do you have an apartment off campus?”
“No. I live with my dad and my brother but my brother stays off campus”
“Yeah, I remember your brother. Damien Sinclair. He is like every girls’ dream guy here. Rose is so desperate for him. She has had a crush on him for like decades now. So, do you have a boyfriend?”
“No, I don’t”
“Oh, I get it. Your heart has been broken and you want to take a break. The same applies to me though. I had something with Emmett in 11th grade but after he broke my heart, I decided to lay low and-”
“I’ve never dated” she stopped walking and looked at me.
“Wait. Hold on” she looked at me like she was missing something.
“That’s not true. Are you a minor?”
“I’ll be turning 19 by August”
“Holy Mary” she said as she bowed.
“Stop doing that, it’s not fair. I grew up having strict parents”
“Strict parents in 2026? That’s absolutely rubbish. Isn’t Damien your brother? Has he ever told you about his life here? Your brother was a b***h. Anything more than b***h”
“Amelia, I’m not that kind of girl”
“You’ll have to be my love. Wait, that means you are still a virgin?” I nodded yes.
“Ok, Ok, but you’ve kissed right?” My facial expression gave her the answer.
“Jas, for real”
I didn’t know what to say. I felt embarrassed.
“Come on, we have classes now”
