A Call from the Past

Lexi was in the middle of folding laundry when her phone rang. The name on the screen made her heart stop. Jackson. It had been years since she’d heard from him—Ethan and Emma’s father. After their messy split, she never expected to hear from him again. The thought of him bringing up the past, of reopening old wounds, was something she had never wanted to face. But now, here he was, calling out of nowhere. With a sigh, she wiped her hands on the front of her jeans and picked up the phone. "Hello?" "Lexi," Jackson's voice came through, low and tentative, as if unsure of the reception he would get. "It’s Jackson." "I know who it is," Lexi said, trying to keep her voice neutral. "What do you want?" There was a pause on the other end, a hesitant silence before Jackson spoke again. "I know this is going to sound out of the blue, but I’ve been thinking about the kids a lot lately." Lexi’s heart tightened. She had no idea what this could mean, especially after all the years he’d been absent. "Jackson, if this is some kind of guilt trip or an attempt to explain yourself, I’m not interested," Lexi said, her words coming out sharper than she intended. "The kids are fine without you." "I know, I know," Jackson responded quickly, his voice laced with regret. "I’m not trying to make excuses or anything like that. I just... I wanted to ask if I could come visit. I’ve been working on something, a surprise for Ethan and Emma. I’d really like to see them, Lex. I know I’ve missed a lot, but I want to do something for them, something special." The idea of Jackson showing up—especially with a surprise—sent a ripple of uncertainty through Lexi. She didn’t know what to think. She had managed to raise Ethan and Emma on her own, teaching them to be independent, strong. Jackson’s absence had been a constant, but they had grown into wonderful kids despite it. "You’re serious about this?" Lexi asked, still trying to wrap her mind around the idea. "You want to just... show up after all these years?" "I know it sounds crazy," Jackson admitted. "And I don’t blame you for being skeptical. But I’ve been thinking about this for a long time. I just... I don’t want to be the father who was never there. I want to change that, if you’ll let me." Lexi hesitated, her thoughts a jumble of emotions. She had built a life for herself and the kids without Jackson, had grown used to being both mother and father. The idea of him coming back, even for a visit, stirred up so many feelings—anger, sadness, fear, and perhaps, a small seed of hope. Ethan and Emma had a right to know their father, to understand why he had left, and maybe—just maybe—he deserved a chance to make amends. But was she ready to let him in? "What kind of surprise are we talking about?" she asked cautiously, her voice softer now. Jackson chuckled, the sound familiar and comforting in a way that caught her off guard. "It’s something I’ve been working on for a while. It’s not much, but I think the kids will love it. I’ll explain more when I get there." Lexi bit her lip. Her instinct was to shut this down immediately, to protect her children from the unpredictability of their father’s intentions. But something about his voice, the sincerity there, made her pause. "Let me talk to Ethan and Emma first," she said finally. "I don’t know if they’re ready for this, Jackson. It’s been a long time." "I understand," Jackson replied, his tone understanding. "I’ll give you time. But please... if you think they might want to see me, I’ll be there. I don’t want to miss this chance." Lexi let out a shaky breath. She could hear the quiet hope in his voice, and for the first time in years, she felt a flicker of something else—something that resembled the old days when things had seemed simpler. "I’ll talk to them and let you know," she said, though she wasn’t sure how she would handle this herself, let alone explain it to the kids. "Thanks, Lex. I really appreciate it." Before she could respond, Jackson hung up. Lexi stood there for a long moment, staring at her phone, her heart pounding. A part of her wanted to block his number and move on. The other part, the one that never quite let go of the idea of what could have been, was too curious about the surprise to ignore it. She walked into the living room, where Ethan and Emma were sprawled out on the couch, absorbed in their homework. Her heart wavered as she watched them—her beautiful, strong kids—knowing that everything she had worked for, everything she had fought to protect, was now being put to the test. "Ethan, Emma," she began, her voice soft but steady. "Your dad called today. He wants to come visit. He has a surprise for you." Both kids looked up at her, their expressions a mix of surprise and uncertainty. Ethan, the older of the two, frowned slightly, his eyes narrowing as if processing what he’d just heard. Emma, always more open and eager to please, simply looked confused. "Wait... Dad? You mean Jackson?" Ethan asked, his voice guarded. Lexi nodded slowly. "Yes. He wants to come and see you both. He’s been thinking about you and wants to make it up to you in some way." Emma blinked, her head tilting to the side. "A surprise? What kind of surprise?" Lexi shook her head. "He didn’t say, but he wants to come next week. I’m not sure what this means yet, or if you’re ready for it, but I wanted to talk to you first." Ethan glanced at Emma, then back at his mom, his expression unreadable. "I don’t know, Mom. It’s been so long. Why now?" "I don’t have all the answers, sweetie," Lexi said, sitting down beside him. "But sometimes, people make mistakes and want a chance to make things right. I’ll leave it up to you, though. If you’re not ready, that’s okay." Emma leaned forward, her curiosity getting the best of her. "I want to know what the surprise is," she said, her voice a little hopeful. "But I’m scared, too. What if he’s just... pretending like nothing ever happened?" Lexi brushed a strand of hair from Emma’s face, her heart aching. "I can’t promise you anything. But if you want to talk to him, I’ll be there. Whatever you decide, I’ll support you." For a long moment, the room was quiet, the tension palpable. Ethan and Emma exchanged a look, and then Ethan turned to his mom, his gaze softening. "Let’s hear him out," he said quietly. "But if he messes this up again, I don’t want him coming back." Lexi nodded, a tear slipping down her cheek despite herself. She wasn’t sure what this would lead to, or if it was the right decision. But she did know one thing: the road ahead, no matter how uncertain, was one they would walk together.
