I scurried away from him as he inched closer to me. I felt for my knife in the bag but remembered that I'd left it behind. I picked up a rock to protect myself and when the man lunged at me in midair, something leaped over me, grabbing hold of him in its mouth. Its enormous legs just missed stomping on me. I could barely make it out but it was big, dark and it growled at the man after it dropped him. I don't think it even saw me as it began to tear the man to shreds. Slowly backing away, I suddenly caught the animal's attention. It bumped me with its mouth as if it was playing with its food. It seemed the largest lizard I'd ever seen. Its skin was thick, scaly and green with little specks of white, as far as I could see in the gloom. It kept bumping and licking me until I tripped and roll
