After what felt like an eternity of sitting in that tense silence, Magnus finally relaxed his arms and turned toward the car. Without a glance in my direction, he opened the door, sat and pulled on his seatbelt, tightened it, and started the engine. He drove back onto the road without a word, and the quiet between us stretched on, heavy and uncomfortable. I waited for him to say something, anything, perhaps to ask what had happened or at least to acknowledge the tension. But Magnus remained stone-faced, his eyes fixed on the road as though nothing had happened. It made sense, I supposed. He had never been the talkative type, and it wasn’t as if we were close.
