Chapter 2: Sign the Divorce

1544 Words
Nyra's POV I walked through the palace with a smile I could not hide. The guard who came to my room walked a few steps ahead of me. “The Alpha is waiting,” he said, and I nodded. “I know.” My heart beat faster with every step, maybe he enjoyed last night as much as I did. Maybe he finally accepted me as his wife, maybe everything was changing. The guard stopped before the office door. “He is inside.” “Thank you.” I smoothed the wrinkles on my dress and gently knocked. “Come in.” Kaelen’s voice reached me and I smiled before pushing the door open. “Good morning…” The words stopped inside my throat and the room felt strange. Kaelen stood beside the large window with his hands buried inside his pockets. His face carried no warmth, no smile and no sign of the gentle man from last night. My eyes moved to the desk, a document lay there and beside it was a silver pen. The title caught my eye. I slowly walked closer. Divorce Agreement. Everything around me became silent, I blinked once and then again. I thought I was seeing the wrong paper. I carefully picked it up, my fingers shook as I read the first line. My name. His name. Our marriage. Our divorce. “No…” The word escaped my lips before I realized it. I lifted my head, “Kaelen…” His face showed nothing. “Sign it.” I stared at him. “I… don’t understand.” “You don’t need to understand.” “I thought…” My voice broke. “I thought last night…” He walks toward the desk. “Our marriage ends today.” I laughed but it was a weak laugh. “This isn’t funny.” “It isn’t meant to be.” I searched his eyes, I searched for the man who held me only hours ago. The man who called me beautiful, the man who touched my face with care. He was gone. “Did I do something wrong?” I whispered. “No.” “Then, why?” Before he could answer, the office door opened and the scent of roses filled the room. I turned at the same time as a beautiful woman walked inside. Long dark hair, bright eyes and a graceful smile. She wore a white dress that shone under the morning light and walked as if this palace belonged to her. As if she had never left. She stopped beside Kaelen, and he did something that made my heart stop beating. He reached for her, his arm circled her waist, and he pulled her close, so naturally and so easily, as though he had done it a thousand times. She smiled up at him. “I missed you.” “I missed you too.” His voice was gentle, gentler than I had ever heard. Then… He kissed her forehead and my chest squeezed. I could not breathe. Three years, three years of waiting for a small smile, three years of hoping he would hold my hand and yet this woman received everything in a few seconds. She slowly turned toward me. “So…” Her lips curved. “You must be Nyra.” I did not answer and she stepped closer to him. “I’ve heard so much about you.” Her eyes travelled over my face, and then she slowly wrapped both hands around Kaelen’s neck and kissed his lips. Not for a second but long enough for me to understand, long enough to break every hope inside me. When she pulled away, she looked directly into my eyes. “You’ve occupied my place long enough.” Every word cut deeper than a knife. She walked to the desk and gently picked up the divorce paper, and then she placed it before me. “You should sign.” I looked at Kaelen but he said nothing. “Please…” I whispered. “Tell me what is happening.” He finally spoke. “My father and your father made a Blood Pact years ago.” “I know.” “Our marriage happened because of that promise.” My fingers moved into fists. “And?” “That promise has been fulfilled.” I shook my head. “We are husband and wife.” “We were.” The single word destroyed me. “I don’t understand.” His voice remained calm. “Seraphine is back.” I slowly turned toward her and she smiled. “My journey took longer than expected.” She winked at me. Kaelen continued, “I loved her before our marriage.” He stared into her face with a warm smile on his face, “I never stopped.” My heart broke. “So…” “I don’t need this marriage anymore.” I looked at him in disbelief. “What about me?” There was silence. “What am I to you?” He said nothing and Seraphine answered instead. “A mistake.” Tears gathered inside my eyes. “I loved you.” Still… No answer. “I waited for you.” Nothing. “I stayed beside you for three years.” Nothing. “I never complained.” Nothing. My lips trembled. “Did those three years mean nothing?” Kaelen finally spoke. “They were my duty.” Duty, not love, not marriage, just duty. Seraphine gently placed the pen into my hand. “Set him free.” She smiled as if she was doing me some kindness. “If you truly love him…” she looked at Kaelen, “You’ll let him be happy.” My vision became blurry and the pen felt heavier than a sword. My hand shook. Part of me wanted to refuse, part of me wanted to fight, but another part remembered the look in his eyes. There was no love there, only distance. So slowly… I signed my name. Nyra Vaelor. The ink dried and so did my marriage. I placed the pen down and Kaelen picked up the document without looking at me. “Thank you.” Thank you. That was all I received after three years as his wife. I turned around before they could see my tears. My legs felt weak. Still… I kept walking and I refused to fall. Outside the office, servants looked at me. Some with smug smiles on their faces, others whisper and cast disdainful looks my way. Words they say spread like wildfire. By the time I reached my room, everything was already waiting. My bags, my clothes and my books. Even the small wooden box that once held my anniversary gift. Everything had been thrown into the hallway. One of the guards standing nearby stepped forward, “Luna…” He stopped and then corrected himself. “Nyra.” I looked at him. “What happened?” “You have been removed from the Luna’s chambers.” “I understand.” “You will now stay in the Omega Quarters.” For a second, I forgot how to breathe. “What?” “They are the Alpha’s orders.” I sucked in a breath, “I see.” The guards waited for me to cry, the servants waited too. Instead, I bent down, lifted my own bags and began walking. Behind me, laughter followed. “Look at her.” “She carried herself into the palace.” “Now she’s carrying herself out.” “I always knew she didn’t belong here.” Every word followed me until I reached the Omega Quarters. The smell changed, the walls were old, and the rooms were small and dimly lit. I pushed the door open. Someone was already inside. Seraphine. She sat comfortably in the only chair with one leg crossed over the other, as if she owned the place and then she smiled. “I knew you’d arrive soon.” I remained silent, and then she stood, walked around me and then handed me a bucket. “Your work begins now.” I stared at the bucket. “What work?” She smiled wider. “You aren’t Luna anymore.” She poked my chest, “You are lower than that.” She pointed outside. “You’ll clean the animal cages.” She pointed another way, “Then wash every blood-stained training uniform. And after that…” She tapped her chin thoughtfully, “You’ll scrub every prison cell.” She closed the distance between us and leaned close enough for only me to hear. “This is where you truly belong.” ~ Hours passed, and my hands became red from scrubbing iron bars. The smell inside the prison made me sick. Still… I kept cleaning. If I stopped, they would punish me again. I finished washing the last prison floor and I slowly stood. Before I could take a single step, heavy footsteps echoed through the hallway and several guards rushed toward me. One grabbed my arm and another snatched the bucket from my hand. I stared at them in shock. “What happened?” The captain’s face was filled with anger as he pointed his sword at me. “Arrest her!”
