What She Left Behind

803 Words
The house didn’t return to normal. Not after that. Even though everything looked the same— the silence felt different. Heavier. Like something had been left behind. Kai noticed it in the smallest things. In the way Adrian moved. In the way he spoke less. In the way he seemed… more distant. And that— that wasn’t easy to ignore. Kai was in the kitchen again later that evening. Working. Or at least pretending to. Because his mind wasn’t on anything in front of him. It was on her. On the way she had walked in like she belonged. On the way she spoke to Adrian like she knew him— not just the version everyone else saw. And that bothered him more than it should. “…You’re distracted again.” Kai didn’t look up. “…You keep noticing that.” A pause. Then— “Because it keeps happening.” Kai exhaled quietly before turning. Adrian stood near the doorway. Same calm expression. Same control. But now— Kai could see it. The difference. “…She used to be important,” Kai said. Straight to it. No hesitation. Silence followed. Adrian didn’t respond immediately. Which meant— it wasn’t a simple answer. Kai held his gaze. “…That wasn’t a question.” Another pause. Then— “She was.” That— that was enough. But not really. Kai crossed his arms slightly. “…And now?” Adrian stepped into the room. Slow. Measured. “That’s not relevant.” Kai almost laughed. “…It looks relevant.” Silence. Because it did. Adrian stopped a few steps away. “You’re involving yourself in something you don’t understand,” he said. Kai didn’t move. “…Then explain it.” That line again. But this time— it carried something else. Not just curiosity. Something closer to… frustration. Adrian noticed. Of course he did. His gaze sharpened slightly. “You’re crossing a line.” Kai tilted his head. “…Which one?” A pause. Because that answer— wasn’t simple. And that hesitation— said enough. Kai stepped closer. Not aggressive. Not careful either. Just… deliberate. “…You don’t like talking about her,” he said quietly. Adrian’s voice dropped slightly. “That’s not your concern.” Kai shook his head. “…It is if she’s walking in here like she owns the place.” That— that shifted something. Because for the first time— Adrian reacted immediately. “She doesn’t,” he said. Sharp. Certain. Kai held his gaze. “…Then why does it feel like she does?” Silence. Heavy. Because that question— was too close to the truth. Adrian stepped closer. Now— the space between them felt tight again. “You’re making assumptions,” he said. Kai didn’t step back. “…And you’re avoiding them.” Another pause. Longer. Because this— this wasn’t just about Selena anymore. This was about them. Adrian’s gaze dropped briefly— then returned. “You’re reacting to something that doesn’t affect you,” he said. Kai exhaled slowly. “…That’s not true.” A beat. “It does.” That— that changed it. Because now— it wasn’t hidden. Not fully. Adrian’s expression shifted slightly. Not much. But enough. “…Why?” he asked. Simple. Direct. Kai hesitated. Just for a second. Because answering that— meant admitting something he hadn’t fully faced yet. Then— “…Because it feels like she knows something I don’t.” That wasn’t the full truth. But it was close enough. Adrian studied him. Then— “She does.” That answer— came too easily. Kai frowned slightly. “…And you’re fine with that?” A pause. Then— “It doesn’t change anything.” Kai shook his head slightly. “…It looks like it does.” Silence. Because again— that wasn’t wrong. Adrian stepped back. Breaking the closeness. “You’re overthinking it,” he said. Kai let out a quiet breath. “…You always say that when you don’t want to deal with something.” That— that landed. And for a moment— Adrian didn’t respond. Didn’t deflect. Didn’t shut it down. Just… stood there. Then— “…Focus on your work,” he said again. But this time— it didn’t carry the same weight. Because something had shifted. Something small. But real. Kai nodded slowly. “…Right.” He turned back to the counter. But his hands didn’t move immediately. Because his thoughts were still there. On Selena. On Adrian. On the space between them that suddenly felt— different. More complicated. More real. And harder to ignore. End of Chapter Thirteen Alright—this is where Selena steps back in and really shifts the dynamic. I’ll keep her calm, confident, a little playful… but layered, just like you wanted.
