Out of place

861 Words
The storm passed overnight. By morning, the house had returned to its usual stillness. Like nothing had happened. No trace of the noise. No sign of disruption. Everything was back in place. Exactly how Adrian preferred it. Kai noticed it immediately. The silence. The control. The way the house seemed to reset itself. But something inside him hadn’t. He moved through the hallway slowly, taking in the same polished surfaces, the same carefully arranged spaces— but it didn’t feel the same anymore. Because now— he was aware of what sat beneath it. “…You’re up early.” Mara’s voice pulled him out of his thoughts. Kai glanced toward the kitchen. She stood near the counter, already working. Like always. “…Didn’t really sleep,” he admitted. Mara paused briefly. Then continued what she was doing. “You’ll get used to it.” Kai leaned slightly against the doorframe. “…To what?” She didn’t answer immediately. Then— “The way things feel here.” Kai frowned slightly. “…You mean tense?” Mara gave him a quick look. Then shook her head. “No.” A pause. “Controlled.” That word again. Kai exhaled softly. “…Yeah.” He stepped into the kitchen, moving toward the counter. “…Did you ever feel like it was too much?” Mara’s hands slowed slightly. Just for a moment. Then continued. “No.” Kai watched her. “…Really?” She met his gaze this time. “Because I know where I stand.” That answer settled quietly. Simple. Certain. Kai looked away. “…And if you didn’t?” Mara didn’t respond. But she didn’t need to. Because the silence said enough. Later— Kai found himself back in the study. Not alone this time. Adrian was already there. Standing near the window. Phone in hand. Speaking in low, controlled tones. “…I’m not interested in delays.” A pause. “Then fix it.” Kai stayed near the doorway. Waiting. Listening without meaning to. “…I don’t care how you do it,” Adrian continued. His voice calm. But sharp. “You’ll handle it.” Another pause. Then— “I expect results.” The call ended. Just like that. Adrian didn’t turn immediately. Didn’t acknowledge Kai’s presence. But he knew he was there. “…Something wrong?” Kai asked. Adrian turned slowly. His expression unreadable. But something in his eyes— was tighter than usual. “No.” Kai raised an eyebrow slightly. “…You don’t sound like it.” A pause. Then— “That’s not your concern.” That tone. Colder. Sharper. More distant. Kai crossed his arms slightly. “…Right.” But he didn’t leave. Didn’t step back. Didn’t follow the rule. Because something about that— felt different. Adrian noticed. Of course he did. “You should be working,” he said. Kai held his gaze. “…I am.” A pause. “Cleaning the study.” Silence. Because that wasn’t wrong. But it wasn’t the point either. Adrian stepped closer. Not as slow as before. Not as controlled. But still deliberate. “You’re pushing again,” he said. Kai didn’t move. “…You’re shutting down again.” That— that landed harder than before. Because it was clearer. More direct. For a second— Adrian didn’t respond. Didn’t deflect. Didn’t step back. Instead— he stayed there. Close. Watching. “You don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said quietly. Kai shook his head slightly. “…Then explain it.” Silence. Long. Because that— wasn’t something Adrian did. Not with anyone. But Kai didn’t step away. Didn’t soften it. Didn’t pretend. And for a moment— it felt like something might shift. Then— Adrian turned away. Breaking it. Again. “You’re out of place here,” he said. That— that wasn’t about the work. Kai’s chest tightened slightly. “…Then why am I still here?” The question came out before he could stop it. And this time— Adrian didn’t walk away. He paused. Just for a second. Then— “…Because I haven’t told you to leave.” That answer— wasn’t simple. It wasn’t an explanation. But it wasn’t dismissal either. It was something in between. Something that left room. Kai watched him. “…That’s not a reason.” Adrian turned slightly. Just enough to meet his gaze again. “It’s the only one you need.” Silence. Because that— that meant something. Not clear. Not defined. But there. Kai exhaled slowly. “…You really don’t make anything easy, do you?” A faint shift in Adrian’s expression. Barely there. Almost unnoticed. “No,” he said. And this time— it didn’t sound like something he wanted to change. Kai stayed there for a moment longer. Then turned. Moving back toward the desk. Back to the work. But his thoughts weren’t on it. Because something had shifted. Not just tension. Not just curiosity. Something deeper. Something that made one thing very clear— He didn’t belong here. And for the first time— he wasn’t sure he wanted to leave. End of Chapter Seven
