A Moment Without Edges

796 Words
The house felt quieter that evening. Not empty. Just… softer. The tension from earlier had faded— or at least settled somewhere out of reach. Kai noticed it as soon as he stepped onto the balcony. The air was cooler now. The city below stretched out in lights and distant movement. For the first time since he arrived— it didn’t feel like he was trapped inside something. It felt open. Breathable. He leaned against the railing, letting the silence sit. Letting his thoughts slow down. Because everything inside the house— everything between him and Adrian— had been building too fast. Too much. “…You like it out here.” Kai didn’t turn immediately. He recognized the voice now. Didn’t need to look. “…It’s the only place that doesn’t feel… controlled,” he said. A pause. Then— Adrian stepped beside him. Not close. Not distant. Just enough. “It’s still part of the house,” Adrian said. Kai glanced at him. “…Doesn’t feel like it.” Silence settled. But this time— it wasn’t sharp. It wasn’t tense. It was… calm. Adrian leaned lightly against the railing. Looking out over the city. Not at Kai. “You’re adjusting,” he said. Kai let out a quiet breath. “…I don’t know if that’s a good thing.” Adrian’s gaze shifted slightly. “Why not?” Kai shrugged. “Because I don’t know what I’m adjusting to.” That answer hung there. Simple. But not easy. Adrian didn’t respond immediately. Instead, he stayed still— looking out at the same view. “Control isn’t something you question,” he said after a moment. “It’s something you rely on.” Kai frowned slightly. “…That sounds like a problem.” A faint shift in Adrian’s expression. Barely there. “Only if it fails,” he replied. Kai turned his head toward him. “…And what happens when it does?” Silence. Longer this time. Adrian’s gaze didn’t move. “It doesn’t.” That— that was confidence. Or something close to it. Kai watched him. “…That’s not realistic.” Adrian finally looked at him. Direct. Steady. “It’s necessary.” That again. Kai exhaled slowly. “…You keep saying that.” A pause. Then— “Because it is.” Silence settled again. But it wasn’t uncomfortable. Not this time. Kai leaned back slightly against the railing. “…You know, most people would get tired of that.” Adrian’s gaze stayed on him. “Tired of what?” Kai met his eyes. “Always having to be in control.” Another pause. Then— “They’re not me.” That answer was simple. But it carried weight. Kai didn’t argue. Didn’t push. Not this time. Instead, he looked away— back at the city. “…Still sounds exhausting,” he said quietly. Something shifted. Not visible. Not obvious. But there. Adrian didn’t respond. Not with words. But he didn’t leave either. He stayed. Standing beside Kai— in that rare space where nothing was being demanded. Nothing was being tested. Just… existing. Minutes passed. Quiet. Uninterrupted. And for the first time— Kai didn’t feel like he was being watched. He felt like he was being allowed. “…You don’t ask questions out here,” Adrian said suddenly. Kai glanced at him. “…Maybe I don’t feel like I have to.” A pause. Adrian studied him. Then— “That won’t last.” Kai almost smiled. “…We’ll see.” That familiar line. That quiet challenge. But this time— it didn’t feel sharp. It felt… lighter. Adrian shook his head slightly. Not disapproving. Not dismissing. Just… acknowledging. “…You’re out of place,” he said again. Kai turned to him fully. “…You keep saying that.” A pause. Then— “Because it’s true.” Silence. Kai held his gaze. “…Then why does it feel like I’m not the one who’s uncomfortable?” That— that landed. Because for the first time— Adrian didn’t have an immediate response. The silence stretched. And something in his expression shifted— just slightly. Then— he looked away. “You should go inside,” he said. Back to control. Back to distance. Kai didn’t move right away. Then finally— “…Yeah.” He stepped back from the railing. Walking toward the door. But just before he stepped inside— he paused. “…You don’t always have to hold it that tight,” he said quietly. A pause. Adrian didn’t respond. But he didn’t deny it either. Kai didn’t wait. He went inside. Leaving Adrian alone on the balcony. And for the first time— the control didn’t feel as solid as it had before. End of Chapter Eight
