The First Shift

Kai didn’t expect to feel watched. But he did. Not in an obvious way. Not like someone staring at him directly. It was quieter than that. Subtle. Like every movement he made… mattered more than it should. He adjusted the cuffs of his sleeves, trying to ignore the feeling. Trying to act like he belonged there. He didn’t. And the house made that clear in ways that didn’t need to be spoken. “Start with the kitchen,” Mara said beside him. Her voice was softer now. More like herself. Kai nodded. “Alright.” He followed her down the hallway, noticing how everything stayed the same no matter where they moved. Clean. Still. Controlled. “Nothing complicated,” she added. “You just follow what I’ve already been doing.” Kai glanced at her. “You say that like it’s easy.” Mara gave him a look. “It is.” He almost smiled. They reached the kitchen. It was just as precise as the rest of the house. Nothing out of place. Nothing unnecessary. Everything arranged like it had been measured. Kai exhaled quietly. “…Okay.” Mara moved through the space with quiet familiarity, showing him where things were kept, what needed to be done, what mattered and what didn’t. “Don’t rush,” she said. “He notices that.” Kai frowned slightly. “He notices everything?” Mara paused. Just for a second. “Yes.” That answer settled deeper than he expected. An hour passed. Then another. Kai worked carefully, paying attention to every detail, repeating what Mara had shown him. At first, it felt simple. Routine. Manageable. But the longer he stayed— the more he realized something. This wasn’t just about doing things right. It was about doing them perfectly. Even small mistakes felt… louder here. More noticeable. And that feeling— that quiet pressure— never left. He was wiping down the counter when he felt it again. That presence. Behind him. Kai didn’t turn immediately. He already knew who it was. “…You’re slower than her.” Adrian’s voice. Calm. Even. But sharp enough to cut through the silence. Kai set the cloth down slowly before turning. “First day,” he said. No apology. Just fact. Adrian stood a few steps away. Watching. Not close. But not distant either. Just enough. “Efficiency matters here,” Adrian said. Kai met his gaze. “I’ll get faster.” A pause. Adrian didn’t respond immediately. His eyes moved briefly across the counter. The surfaces. The placement of things. Then back to Kai. “You’re trying too hard.” That caught him off guard. Kai frowned slightly. “…Isn’t that the point?” Adrian stepped closer. Not enough to invade space. Just enough to shift the air between them. “No,” he said. His voice was quieter now. “Trying too hard creates mistakes.” Kai held his gaze. “So what should I do instead?” Another pause. This one longer. Because the question wasn’t simple. Adrian studied him. Then— “Relax.” Kai let out a small breath. “…That’s not exactly easy here.” Something in Adrian’s expression shifted. Not much. Just enough to be noticeable. “Then you’ll learn,” he said. That tone again. Not harsh. Not soft. Just… certain. Like he expected it. Like failure wasn’t an option. Kai nodded once. “Yeah.” Silence settled again. But this time— it didn’t feel empty. It felt… aware. Adrian didn’t move right away. Didn’t leave. He stayed there— watching— like he was deciding something. Kai felt it. That attention again. Different this time. More focused. More intentional. “…You’re not like the others,” Adrian said. Kai frowned. “What others?” “The ones who’ve worked here.” A pause. Kai crossed his arms slightly. “…How?” Adrian’s gaze didn’t shift. “They don’t look back.” That— that landed. Kai held his eyes without hesitation. “…Maybe they should.” Silence. And for a second— something changed. Subtle. But real. Because that answer— wasn’t expected. Adrian didn’t respond immediately. But this time— he didn’t look away either. “…Maybe,” he said. And just like that— the tension shifted. Not broken. Just… deeper. Adrian stepped back. The moment ended as quickly as it started. “I’ll be in the study,” he added. Then he left. No hesitation. No lingering. Like the conversation had already been concluded. Kai stood there for a second longer. Then exhaled slowly. “…Yeah,” he muttered under his breath. This wasn’t going to be simple. Not the house. Not the work. And definitely not him. And for some reason— Kai wasn’t sure he wanted it to be. End of Chapter Two
