Something About to Change

749 Words
The house felt different the next morning. Not tense. Not quiet in the usual way. Just… unsettled. Kai noticed it before anything even happened. In the way the staff moved. In the way voices stayed lower than usual. In the way Mara kept glancing toward the entrance without saying why. “…What’s going on?” Mara didn’t answer immediately. She adjusted something on the counter— unnecessarily— before speaking. “Nothing that concerns you.” Kai frowned slightly. “…You keep saying that too.” She gave him a look. A familiar one. “You don’t need to be involved in everything.” Kai leaned lightly against the counter. “…I’m already involved.” That wasn’t a question. And they both knew it. Mara didn’t argue. But she didn’t agree either. Instead— she just said: “Stay out of the front hall today.” Kai’s brows pulled together. “…Why?” A pause. Then— “Just do it.” That— that wasn’t like her. Kai watched her for a second longer. Then nodded. “…Alright.” But the question stayed. Later— Kai found himself doing the exact opposite. Not intentionally. Not at first. He had just been moving through the house— working— thinking— trying to ignore the way everything still felt slightly off. Until he heard voices. Near the front. Not the usual kind. Softer. More controlled. But… different. Kai slowed. Listening. “…you didn’t tell me you were back.” Adrian. The response came a second later. A woman’s voice. Smooth. Calm. “…I wasn’t planning to.” Kai stopped completely. There was something in that tone. Not tense. Not hostile. But familiar. “…That hasn’t stopped you before,” Adrian said. A quiet pause. Then— “I was busy.” Kai moved closer— just slightly. Careful. “…You’re always busy,” Adrian replied. There was a faint shift in the air. Something subtle. “…And you’re still exactly the same,” the woman said. Kai reached the edge of the hallway. Just enough to see. She stood near the entrance. Composed. Elegant. Like she belonged there. Not like a guest. Not like someone unfamiliar. Like someone who had walked through those doors many times before. Kai’s chest tightened slightly— without a clear reason. Adrian stood across from her. Closer than he stood with most people. “…You shouldn’t be here unannounced,” he said. She tilted her head slightly. “…You’re not sending me away.” That— that wasn’t a guess. It was certainty. Adrian didn’t respond. But he didn’t deny it either. Kai watched. Trying to understand. Because this— felt different. Not like the men from before. Not like business. This was something else. Something personal. “…You’ve changed things,” she said, her gaze shifting briefly around the house. Adrian’s voice stayed even. “I change what needs to be changed.” She smiled slightly. Not amused. Not surprised. Just… knowing. “…And what about the things you can’t control?” That question— felt familiar. Kai froze slightly. Because he had asked something like that before. Adrian didn’t respond immediately. Then— “Those don’t stay.” The same answer. The same tone. But this time— it sounded different. The woman watched him for a moment. Then— “…Still trying to convince yourself of that?” Silence. Heavy. Because that— that wasn’t something people said to him. Not here. Kai’s chest tightened again. Because this woman— whoever she was— spoke to Adrian like she wasn’t afraid of him. Like she understood him. And that— felt new. Adrian’s gaze hardened slightly. “You’ve stayed long enough.” A pause. Then— “…Have I?” She didn’t move. Didn’t leave. Instead— her eyes shifted. And landed— on Kai. Just like that. For a second— everything stopped. Because that look— wasn’t random. It was deliberate. Measured. Interested. “…And who is that?” she asked softly. Silence. Kai didn’t move. Didn’t step back. But the moment— shifted. Because now— he wasn’t just watching anymore. He was part of it. Adrian didn’t answer immediately. And that pause— said more than anything else. The woman smiled faintly. “…You’ve changed more than I thought.” Kai held her gaze. Uncertain. But not backing down. Because something about her— felt important. And whatever this was— it wasn’t simple. It never was.
