A mother's love

Liora’s pov “You do remember the way to my house, oldie. That’s impressive,” I came down from the back seat of the car and felt the unsteady but fast breeze in the air. The cool breeze of home. My eyes ran round the broken lane of the street to children playing by a big tree closer to the compound of the house. It’s been months since I’ve been here and yet it still feels like home. My eyes was glued to the short building I used to live. “I can see the happiness In your eyes . The feeling of nostalgia is a beautiful one, isn’t it?” Selene asked as she placed her hand on my shoulder. She wore that serene smile on her face. I nodded and she followed behind me. When we got the room, I could see new sets of footwear by the front door. That didn’t surprise me at all. The landlord was hungry for money, if your rent was delayed for a week, he’d immediately evict you and rent it out to someone else. I longed to look inside the room one more time but I swore to myself before I came here that I’ll fight to be a better person. This is the time to grow. Not the time to look back at my past. “Now that we’re done with the house touring, I would like to visit your former place of work. If you won’t bring it up then I will. You also want to see them, it’s clearly written in your eyes,” said Selene as she playfully pinched my cheeks. “You’re not wrong at all, Selene. I wasn’t able to say a proper goodbye. The butler took us down to the strip club on my request. The place was quite noisy but we didn’t come here for the music or for any type of fun. “You don’t need to come inside if you don’t want to, Selene. They’re a lot of creeps out here. You wouldn’t want them getting the pleasure to touch you,” I said with a straight face. “Look how cute you sound when you speak of protecting me. You don’t need to worry. None of that will happen, and if it does, I know how to defend myself,” Selene responded with a meek smile on her face. As soon as I stepped foot into the club, I could remember the first day I worked as a stripper. The drizzle of the rain was intense. It was really loud as the droplets of rain beat the roof above my head like drumming stick. Though the rain was loud it couldn’t hold a candle to the sound of my stomach. I hadn’t eaten in two days and now rain? Why don’t I just lie in the rain and hope to get washed up to my grave or something? I had completely given up hope when my vision fixed on a bunch of teenage girls my age running from the rain and into the strip club. They were all dressed in flashy and revealing clothes, but who was I to judge them? This was their means of livelihood and there were I was squatting under the room if an abandoned garage, the idea came to me to try and get a job at the club. It was no easy task convincing madam to let me dance at her club. I could remember when she chased me away saying to eat something and gain weight first but how could I gain weight and eat more if I don’t have the funds? Selene and I passed through the loud gathering around a familiar pole, the pole I used to dance on. I took a quick glance at the dancer but I wasn’t able to recognize her. “Woah! No one’s allowed in th—” Nina was about to stop us when she realized I was the one. “Look who decided to remember us today. I’ll do you the favor of opening the door myself. “You can’t open madam’s door without knocking first, you ignorant girl,” I tapped her on the head and she squeaked. Madam’s face lit up as if she’s seen a ghost. She began to slowly walk up to me with obscure vibe around her. “Good evening, Ma—” She grabbed and embraced me warmly. I could feel her head on my chest. “You never change, do you?” I asked. The same kind feeling I got from her eight years ago was still the same. “That’s rich coming from you, Liora. Look at you… she placed her hands on my shoulder and leaned backwards, scanning my entire body. Her gaze shifted to Selene. You’ve done a wonderful job, thank you and May you be blessed,” she said. “I should be the one thanking you. You’ve taken my sister as your own right from her childhood. You have my gratitude,” Selene replied beautifully. “Come in, please have a sit. Serve them tea, Nina!” “Oh goddess! I need to perform in thirty minutes and you’re giving me another work? I always knew Liora was your favorite!” Nina murmured angrily as she pouted away. “Seems you’ve got a younger sister of your own as well,” Selene said while staring at me. “Not only mine. She troubles everyone,” we both giggled. Madam sat down with us and we began to chat and sip tea. We chatted until we lost track of time. The sun had gave way for the moon and finally it was nighttime. Mr butler had to inform us that it was getting late before we halted our chat and decided to leave. “Be happy, Liora, you deserve every bit of it and one more thing before you leave. You’ve started a new life afresh. You don’t have to keep looking back at your past. Fate has decided plainly that you were never meant for these streets,” madam placed her hand on my head and sent me off. “Are you sure your mother’s dead at all?” Selene’s asked. “What do you mean?” “You’ve got a perfect replacement right here. We both chatted and laughed until we got home to face the trouble waiting for us.
