Emily rushed into the VIP ward where Cherie was admitted. Cherie was still unconscious, the only one in the spacious room. The doctor walked in with his chart, followed by a young nurse.
"How's she doing?" Emily asked. The doctor looked up from his chart. "Her life is not in danger.. The shock of cold water caused a sudden drop in her blood pressure, leading to loss of consciousness... I'll say she should stay away from cold water."
Emily sighed with disappointment.
"She's not pregnant?" She rolled her eyes
The doctor smiled. "No, ma'am."
A few minutes after the doctor left, Cherie woke up. Emily, sitting on the sofa and going through a magazine, got up and walked to her bedside.
"Mom, where am I?" Cherie's voice was weak, and her eyes were not fully opened. "You're at the hospital," Emily replied, bringing her fingers to Cherie's face. "How many fingers do you see?"
Cherie squinted her eyes. "Four," she whispered.
Emily nodded.
"Good... you're okay."
NOAH'S OFFICE
There was a knock on the door before it was pushed open, and Noah's secretary, Mia, walked in, holding a fancy envelope. She walked to Noah's desk, where he was going through a stack of files.
"Sire, the invitation for the Ling 60th anniversary just came in," she said, dropping it on the table before Noah. He looked up and picked up the invitation, running his eye through the package before dropping it.
"I'll go through it later... send this to the office of management and budget... let them know the president has to review it before Thursday," he said, handing over the files he was reviewing earlier.
Mia took the files and made to leave but suddenly stopped and turned back. "The hospital called... they said your wife is awake. Should I get the car ready?"
Noah pondered for a while, tapping his hand on the table. "No."
AT THE HOSPITAL
Cherie dropped the ceramic bowl of porridge and proceeded to wipe her mouth when Emily walked in, holding a basket of fruits.
"Someone dropped this off," Emily said, dropping the basket and handing a tiny note to Cherie. Cherie opened the note and ran her eyes through the contents.
"Hope you get well soon... love from Theo," the note read. Emily took her seat beside Cherie.
"Who's Theo?" she asked, peeping.
Cherie quickly hid the note. "No one," she replied, tucking the note away.
Emily sighed.
"How ironic... your husband's not even here to check up on you, but another man's sending you cute little notes... be careful."
Cherie pouted
"I want to eat some cake, mum”
She suddenly said ignoring her mum’s comment.
"Unbelievable... I can't believe you still want to eat cake when you should be looking for ways to get your husband’s attention ," Emily replied.
“Stop calling him my husband.. am sick of it”
Noah’s office
Noah walked into the coffee shop. Before he could reach for his phone to call his client a hand waved at him from the far end of the medium-sized shop.
He was surprised to see Kristine. He walked up to her.
"What a coincidence... are you meeting someone?" he asked as he got to her.
"Yeah... a broker... I guess you're meeting one too," Kristine replied.
Noah drew a seat and sat opposite her.
"How did you know?"
Kristine shrugged with a gleam on her face. "Because I am the broker."
Noah frowned. "You?...what games are you playing now”
"you wouldn't be here if you knew I was the one ... anyway, it's nice to be here with you again... I hope we don't have to talk about work and just enjoy coffee and cake like we used to," Kristine said.
Noah sighed. "This is top priority.. you really can’t joke around with this”
"I'll get the deal for you... effortlessly... I promise," she said. "But you'll have to promise me something in return."
Noah looked at her,his face doubting .
“Believe me .. i know a lot of these people and all I need is just a phone call or maybe a golf session.”
The waiter brought their coffee and strawberry cake. "I remember you loved strawberries... I hope you still do," Kristine said, passing a fork to Noah, who took it and scooped a bit of cake into his mouth.
"Hmmm... nice," he murmured.
"Can I have three strawberry cakes and one chocolate cake?" a familiar voice sounded behind Noah at the counter.
"Is that not your wife?"
Noah turned around and saw Cherie handing her card over to the baristas.
She looked like she was in a hurry.
The baristas swiped the card ,she frowned and She swiped it again.
“Am sorry ma’am…it says insufficient fund”
“Here,use this”
Noah stretched his card to the baristas.
Cherie was shocked to see him but when Kristine appeared beside him her shock turned into sneer and disappointment.
“No don’t bother…I’ll just take one of these instead
She said taking the card from the baristas and giving it back to Noah.
“Go on and enjoy your date….husband”
Emily rushed into the shop at that moment.
She was breathing heavily
“Oh God….what is wrong…”
She trailed off as she sighted Noah
She smiled and arranged herself Thinking he was there to check up on Cherie.
“Oh my dear son in law…..such a surprise
The baristas was done
Cherie took her card and the cake
“Let’s go mum…we should not disturb their date”
She said and walked out
Emily apologized to Noah and went after Cherie.
She prevented Cherie from going further.
What is wrong with you…he’s here to see you ….what’s the attitude for”
Cherie sighed looking downcast
“ he’s not here to see me” she looked back “he’s here for her”
Emily looked inside the glass door and sighted Kristine and Noah.
“Who’s she?”
She asked now facing Emily.
“She’s the president’s daughter…they practically grew up together “
.
“W-which president .. “
Emily swallowed, her face turned cold but Cherie was too immersed in her own misery to notice.
“Who else…the country’s president, you’ll probably see her on the news or something “
“No way”
Emily gasped.
