Chapter 9: The Observatory Trap

441 Words
The old observatory stood on a hill overlooking the campus, its domed roof rusted and forgotten. Lena arrived after dark, the moon hidden behind clouds. Ethan was already there, pacing near the entrance. "Did you bring it?" Lena asked. Ethan held up the flash drive. "And more. I found emails between Julian and NeuroTech's CEO, discussing 'project feasibility' and 'asset disposal'." Lena's stomach churned. "Asset disposal? You mean...?" Ethan nodded grimly. "I think so." They stepped inside, the floor creaking underfoot. The observatory was empty except for a few dusty telescopes and piles of old journals. "Let's set up here," Lena said, plugging the flash drive into her laptop. "We need to copy this data to a secure server." As she worked, Ethan wandered to a telescope, peering through the lens. "We should have done this weeks ago." Lena didn't respond, focused on the screen. The files were downloading slowly, each one a piece of the puzzle. Suddenly, the door slammed shut. Lena jumped, her heart racing. "Ethan? What are you—" But Ethan wasn't by the telescope. He was standing by the door, a strange look on his face. "I'm sorry, Lena." Lena's blood ran cold. "What are you talking about?" Ethan stepped aside, revealing Julian standing in the shadows. "Ethan's been working with me all along," Julian said, his voice calm. "He's been reporting your every move." Lena turned to Ethan, betrayal slicing through her. "Why?" Ethan looked away. "Julian offered me a position at NeuroTech. A real job, with real money. Something you could never understand, coming from nothing." Lena felt sick. "So you used me? Lied to me?" Julian stepped forward, holding out his hand. "Come, Lena. It's time to end this charade." Lena backed away, her laptop forgotten. "You set me up." "Of course I did." Julian smiled. "I needed to see where your loyalties lay. And now I know." He nodded to Ethan, who moved toward Lena. "Don't make this difficult." Lena spun around, running for the stairs. She could hear them chasing her, their footsteps thundering behind her. She burst through a door onto the observatory's balcony, the night air freezing her lungs. There was no way down except a rickety fire escape. "Stop!" Julian shouted. Lena didn't look back. She climbed over the railing, grabbing hold of the fire escape. It shook under her weight, rusted bolts groaning. "Wait!" Julian's voice was closer now. "You'll fall!" Lena ignored him, climbing down as fast as she could. The fire escape swayed dangerously, each step a gamble. Then, a loud crack. The metal beneath her foot gave way. Lena screamed, falling into the darkness.
