Chapter 5: The Fall

564 Words
Dr. Kane dragged Lena into her office, slamming the door behind them. “What the hell were you thinking?” she hissed. “Associating with Julian Hale? Do you have any idea what he’s capable of?” Lena’s head spun. “I was just—” “Don’t lie to me.” Dr. Kane leaned forward, her voice trembling. “I’ve seen his files. The ‘research’ he’s conducting— it’s illegal. Unethical. And if you’re involved, you’ll be expelled. Do you understand?” Lena’s heart sank. “I didn’t know—” “Of course you didn’t.” Dr. Kane sighed, softening slightly. “He’s a predator, Lena. He preys on vulnerable students, luring them into his web with promises of glory. But it’s all a lie. He’ll destroy you.” She reached into her desk drawer, pulling out a manila folder. “Here. Proof of his misconduct. Take it to the dean. End this before it’s too late.” Lena flipped through the folder: emails, financial records, medical reports. Her stomach churned. “Why are you helping me?” Dr. Kane hesitated. “Because I was once like you. Naive. Ambitious. And I let Julian Hale ruin my life.” She turned away, staring out the window. “Now go. And whatever you do, don’t look back.” Lena fled the office, the folder clutched to her chest. She had to get to the dean’s office before Julian found out. But as she rounded the corner, she collided with a solid chest. “Going somewhere?” Julian asked, his voice icy. Lena stepped back, her heart pounding. “Stay away from me.” Julian’s gaze dropped to the folder. “Ah. I see Victoria’s been meddling.” He grabbed her arm, pulling her into an empty classroom. “You think she’s your savior? She’s just as corrupt as I am. Maybe more.” Lena struggled, but his grip was iron. “Let me go!” “Not until you listen.” Julian pinned her against the wall, his face inches from hers. “Victoria wants my research for herself. She’ll use you, discard you, just like she did me.” Lena’s breath hitched. “Why should I believe you?” “Because I’m the only one who’s ever told you the truth.” Julian’s voice softened. “You’re not just a student to me, Lena. You’re… more.” He leaned in, his lips brushing hers. This time, Lena didn’t resist. The kiss was rough, demanding, a clash of tongues and teeth. But beneath the urgency, there was something else—tenderness, maybe, or desperation. When they broke apart, Lena was trembling. “What do you want from me?” Julian’s eyes darkened. “Choose. Me, or Victoria. But choose quickly. The consequences… are irreversible.” He turned and left, leaving Lena alone in the dark classroom. Her mind raced. Who can I trust? As she stepped into the hallway, a security guard approached. “Ms. Voss? The dean would like to see you.” Lena’s blood ran cold. She glanced at the folder in her hands. Do I hand it over? Or destroy it? She took a deep breath. “Lead the way.” The guard turned, and Lena followed. But as they walked, she slipped the folder into a trash can, her heart pounding. I’ll deal with Julian on my own.
