Jackson's Move

1080 Words
Dara's days at East High were beginning to fall into a routine, but there was a tension in the air that she didn't quite understand. Chloe had become a constant companion, but sometimes it seemed to Dara that she was hiding something with her gaze. The bad boys, however, weren't holding back at all. Christian had taken charge of their bets, and his charm was working full force. Wherever Dara went, he appeared everywhere. In the cafeteria, he would randomly stop at her table and smile confidently. At the library, he'd offer her reading tips. His insistence was both discouraging and tiring. One afternoon, as Dara sat under a tree reviewing her notes, Christian approached her with two cups of iced coffee. “Would you like one?” Dara looked up, a wary expression on her face. “I didn't ask.” Christian laughed indulgently. “Consider it a gesture of goodwill. I'm just trying to be neighborly.” Dara hesitantly accepted the coffee to avoid further conversation. “Thank you,” she said curtly and returned to her notebook. Christian sat down next to her. “So, what are you so focused on?” She answered without looking up. “Some of us actually came here to study.” He put his hands behind his head and laughed. “You tell jokes. I like that.” Christian’s eyes narrowed slightly, but his smile remained. “You’re a breath of fresh air, you know that?” he said, clearly enjoying the challenge that Dara presented. “Everyone else is so eager to please, but you… you’re a puzzle that I’m determined to solve.” Dara couldn’t help but roll her eyes, both at his remark and his determination to wear her down. “I’m not a puzzle. I'm just not interested," Dara said firmly, closing her notebook. Christian's expression hardened, and he leaned in closer. "You may not be interested, but I am. And I don't give up that easily, Dara. So you can keep pretending that you're immune to my charms, but sooner or later, you'll realize that resistance is futile." Dara stood up, her face clouding over. "I don't have time for this," she said, pushing past Christian and stalking away. Christian watched her go, his eyes flickering with a mix of frustration and admiration. That night, Jackson and Kim caught Christian relaxing in their shared apartment. It was a mix of modern furniture and scattered traces of college life - textbooks, half-forgotten coffee cups, and a perpetually dirty couch. “How'd it go?” asked Jackson, taking a seat on the couch next to Christian. Christian grinned. “She's tough, but that's what makes her interesting.” Kim crossed his arms and leaned against the wall. “I think you're pushing her too hard. She's not the type to give in to your usual tactics, Christian,” he said. “I've got it under control.” Jackson laughed. “Yes, because you're completely irresistible.” Christian shot Jackson a sideways glance. “Glad you recognize my appeal, Jackson. Maybe you’ll learn something from me,” he teased. “Besides, Dara’s just playing hard to get. I can tell she’s into me, she just doesn’t know it yet.” Jackson chuckled. “You’re like a cat trying to catch a mouse that’s not even there. But I’ll give you credit, you’re having more fun with this bet than you’ve had in a while.” “Exactly,” Christian replied with a wink. “Don't worry about it. Consider the bet already won.” Kim frowned, but didn't say anything. The whole thing still didn’t sit right with him, but he wasn’t about to back out now. He’d just have to keep an eye on things. Dara's resolve was tested the next day when Jackson made his move. Unlike Christian, Jackson acted calmly. He waited until Dara emerged from the library with her arms full of books. “Let me help you,” he said, stepping beside her. Dara looked at him and recognized him as one of Christian's friends. “No, I'm fine,” he said. “Come on. Your back must be hurting. Let me help you.” Before she could protest, he took half the weight off her arms. “Thank you,” she said. “But I can do it myself. I can handle it,” Jackson replied, “But it wouldn't hurt to have someone else do the heavy lifting once in a while.” As they walked, Jackson kept up a light conversation, asking about her classes and plans for the weekend. Dara answered politely but curtly, and it was clear she wasn't interested in small talk. As they approached the dorm, Jackson smiled and held out a book to her. “Here. Let me know if you need a study buddy.” “I'll keep that in mind,” she said, stepped inside and closed the door behind her. Jackson walked back into the apartment and shook his head. “She's not an easy one.” Christian laughed. “I told you so. But that's why she's fun to be with.” Jackson muttered. “She's not like the others, Chris. Are you serious about this?” “Of course she is. Just stick to the plan.” That night, while working on an assignment in the dorm, Chloe noticed her anxiety. “Are you okay?” asked Chloe. Dara hesitated, then nodded. “Yeah, it's just... These people. Christian, Jackson, Kim. They're all over the place right now.” Chloe frowned. “I think they're just curious. You're new, and they like the attention.” “Maybe they do,” Dara said, though she wasn't sure she liked it. “I just hope they get bored and move on.” Dara sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose in frustration. “You know, Chloe, sometimes I feel like I’m being watched. Like there’s always someone nearby.” Chloe tilted her head. “That’s just life on campus. Everyone’s in everyone’s business. Christian and his crew might be more persistent, but that doesn’t mean they’re stalking you or anything.” She placed a comforting hand on Dara’s shoulder. “You’re doing fine. You’re sticking to your guns, right? That’s all you need to do. As long as you don’t let them get under your skin, you should be fine." Dara agreed as they focused on their study, leaving her worries behind her.
