Juliette’s POV
Juliette’s blade shrieked against the imposter’s, sparks flashing between them like struck stars.
The girl was trained. Fast. Calculated.
Juliette was pain and instinct.
She ducked, rolled, and came up swinging. Too late.
A s***h kissed her arm. Hot pain tore through her sleeve.
She hissed. Blood slid down to her fingers.
“You’re slower than I expected,” the girl taunted, circling.
Juliette’s breath came fast. “I’m not here to impress you.”
The girl smirked. “Good. Because you won’t live long enough to.”
Lucien took a step forward—but the golden-eyed woman held out a hand.
“She has to win this herself.”
Lucien’s fists clenched. “She’s bleeding.”
“She’s becoming.”
Juliette gritted her teeth and blocked another strike. Her body screamed. Her muscles burned.
But something deeper had been set alight.
The choker burned against her throat. The serpent ring tightened like a vow.
And then—it happened.
A surge of heat rolled down her spine. Through her chest. Her limbs.
Power.
It wasn’t borrowed. It wasn’t gifted.
It was hers.
Juliette moved faster—cleaner. Each blow found its mark.
The imposter stumbled, caught off guard.
Juliette pressed forward, fury unleashed. She wasn’t fighting for survival anymore.
She was fighting for her rights.
With a cry, she twisted her blade. Steel tore free from the girl’s hand and clattered across the ground.
The girl dropped to her knees, breathless. Vulnerable.
Juliette stood over her, blade poised.
The woman’s voice echoed softly. “Do it.”
Juliette’s grip tightened. Her pulse pounded in her ears.
The imposter looked up—unflinching. Not begging. Not broken.
Defiant.
Just like Juliette used to be.
Juliette exhaled.
And lowered her blade.
“No.”
Silence.
“She yields,” Juliette said. “But I don’t kill my own.”
Lucien stepped to her side. “She spared her.”
Rafe gave a slow nod, impressed.
The golden-eyed woman studied her. “A queen with mercy. Rare.”
Juliette faced her, blood smeared down her arms. “I didn’t win because I was stronger.”
“No,” the woman said. “You won because you remembered who you were.”
Juliette looked down at the sword.
And let it fall.
Later that night…
The old library smelled like ash and forgotten things. Juliette sat curled in one of the velvet chairs, staring at the fire.
Lucien stood in the doorway.
“You should be resting,” he said.
She didn’t look at him. “I’ve never felt more awake.”
He crossed to her slowly, quietly.
“You tapped into it.”
“The power?”
He nodded. “It’s your inheritance. Not magic. Not madness. Legacy.”
Juliette’s throat tightened.
“I used to be afraid of it. Afraid it would make me someone else.”
Lucien sat across from her.
“It will,” he said. “But maybe someone else is who you need to become.”
Silence wrapped around them.
Juliette broke it.
“Who trained her?”
Lucien’s face darkened. “Her name is Sera. She was raised in the Southern sect. Meant to take your place if you… didn’t survive.”
“Why didn’t she kill me?” Juliette asked.
Lucien’s eyes met hers. Steady.
“Because you reminded her of something she lost.”
“What?”
Lucien’s voice dropped.
“Choice.”
Juliette leaned back into the shadows.
“Rafe said the pact was a crown.”
Lucien nodded once.
“And a cage,” she added.
“Exactly.”
She studied him. “And you? What are you in all this?”
He hesitated.
“I was born to protect the bloodline.”
“You were one of them.”
“I was their weapon.”
Juliette’s breath caught.
“And now?”
Lucien stood slowly. “Now I protect you. Not the Court. Not the crown. You.”
He turned to leave.
“Lucien.”
He paused in the doorway.
Juliette rose and walked toward him. Her fingers reached up, brushing the scar on his cheek.
“Why me?” she whispered.
His voice was rough. Honest.
“Because when I look at you… I see the one thing they’ll never control.”
Before she could reply—
A knock.
Rafe stood in the hall, holding something dark.
“We have a problem.”
Juliette turned, the moment dissolving.
“What now?”
He held up a sealed envelope.
Her name is written in silver ink.
“They sent a summons.”
“From the Court?”
Rafe shook his head. “No.”
He handed her the envelope.
Juliette peeled it open, breathing slowly.
Inside—black parchment. Silver ink.
A single line:
You are not the only heir. The true blood returns at midnight.
Juliette’s pulse dropped.
The choker around her neck tightened like a noose.
