Chapter 5: Please Let Me Keep My Dignity!

1103 Words
Isabella met her father Alexander Bennett again in the hospital morgue. Due to the urgency of the situation, she couldn't wait for her scheduled ride. Instead, she asked Asher to drive her to the hospital without any delay. But she was still late. Her father died on the spot after jumping off the building, and his body was brought to the morgue. As soon as Isabella arrived, her mother, who had been sobbing on the floor, suddenly stood up and smacked her hard across the face. Maggie, with tears streaming down her cheeks, shook with anger as she gritted her teeth and snapped, "You shame of my flesh! I didn't allow you to marry Trevor back then, but you insisted on tying the knot with him. Now, not only did he divorce you, but he also bankrupted your father's company and caused him to jump off the building. Isabella, why would I have such a worthless daughter like you? You jinx!" Her mother's harsh words stung Isabella a lot. Isabella was too shocked to even feel the burning pain on her face as she exclaimed, "Trevor? How could he do that?" "Ha! How could he? It's all because you're too stupid. You deserve to be humiliated and abandoned!" Maggie flew into a towering rage. She jerked Isabella into the morgue and yelled, "Go and take a look at your father! Never forget his tragic death. May you never find peace in your life!"  With that, she yanked Isabella to Alexander. Isabella stared at the body covered in white cloth and she felt so heartbroken that the overwhelming pain made her suffocated. She couldn't help but let tears flood down her cheeks. She reached out several times with trembling hands but recoiled each time even before touching the white cloth. She could not believe it at all. Her father was fine the day before, and so was Alexander Builders. Yet, both of them were gone overnight. Trevor Malone, you ruthless jerk! I've given you the freedom to be together with your mistress. Why did you still destroy my family? Why? Isabella's bloodshot eyes were filled with hatred as she gripped the edge of the mortuary bed with both hands, her body going limp. She was going to meet Trevor and questioned him about what she had done to offend him to make him do this to her. In the end, Isabella still didn't have the courage to cast a glance at her father, even though it should be the last time she could see him. She gathered herself up and as she plodded to the door of the morgue, Donald Lewin, the deputy manager of Alexander Builders' legal department and her father's personal lawyer, approached. He took out two documents from his briefcase and presented them to Isabella. "Ms. Morgan, I have here the agreement and property mortgage certificate concerning the acquisition of Alexander Builders by the Blackwood Group. Please take a look. Your assets have been frozen, and your house and car have been mortgaged to the bank. Your aunt Emily said that she would let you and Mrs. Morgan leave with your own personal belongings due to your relationship, and she will help with your debts."  It left Isabella utterly dumbfounded. She quickly wiped away her tears. "Did my aunt collude with Trevor to bankrupt Alexander Builders?"  The lawyer pitied her and nodded. "I'm really sorry, Ms. Morgan."  A wave of rage washed over Isabella, and she found it hard to swallow it. Emily had always been respectful and submissive to Isabella's father, but it turned out to be all an act. Isabella's own aunt and ex-husband had actually set up her family together. "I'm going to kill them." Isabella held up her fists, intending to leave. Just then, someone suddenly struck the back of her head hard, which caused a loud thud. Before Isabella fainted in astonishment, she saw her mother's resentful face. "Isabella, it's you who caused your father's death." Isabella woke up in a ward. The glaring white light made her eyes sore, and she felt a dull pain in her head. But none of them could compare to the pain deep down her heart. For the first time in her life, her mother had hit her. But Isabella didn't blame her mother at all. After all, her mother had been a full-time housewife for decades, and Isabela knew how much her mother relied on her father. Perhaps it was because of her mother's influence that Isabella also believed she could depend on her husband for the rest of her life, but the cruel reality burst her bubbles overnight. When Isabella struggled to sit up, she caught sight of a man who was standing by the window with his arms crossed. "You're awake." Asher walked up to her. "How do you feel?" Isabella sat up and touched her throbbing head. "Why are you still here?" After Asher had dropped her off at the hospital, she was in a hurry to find her father and asked him to leave. "You left your suitcase in my car just because you want me to bring it back to you, didn't you?" Asher looked at her with a disgusted look and continued in a casual tone, "I should have arrived later. Then you could have been beaten to death at the morgue door and I could just conveniently toss you into it." Isabella gave a bitter and self-mocking smile. She wished it had been her lying in the morgue instead of her father, who had tragically ended his own life by jumping off a building due to the bankruptcy of their company. Isabella sincerely thanked him. "Thank you for returning the suitcase!" She removed the needle from her hand, threw back the covers, and tried to get out of bed. Asher held her shoulder and snapped in a commanding tone, "The doctor said you have a mild concussion. You must stay for observation." Isabella pushed him away. "No, I'm fine." Asher didn't let go and asked with a frown, "What on earth happened to your family? Why would you be sent to the hospital just after going to the morgue?"  Gone was the casual demeanor he had, replaced by genuine concern mixed with authority. His casual and caring question touched a raw nerve in Isabella. At the thought of her father's miserable death, Isabela was so sorrowful that she found it difficult to breathe. She forced back her tears and shoved Asher away with all her might. "I'm sorry. My family affairs are none of your concern. Please let me keep my dignity."
