Root Mother By Adria Laycraft Naois peered through the downpour and called once more for her niece. The rain made a hushed roar that drowned her voice, but she’d be damned if she’d let the girl elude another day of chores. Naois swung her pot off the heat of the flame and scooped up her shawl from the wooden bench, watching for any sign of the girl as she wrapped her shoulders. Rain sizzled on the fire, dripping through the opening in the roof that released wood smoke into a charcoal sky. With another huff, Naois struck out into the wild weather. Despite her frustration with Annwn, Naois thrilled at the wildness of the storm, the clean air away from the hearth, the bit of freedom from all that needed doing. How sweet it would be if she were Root Mother, as much a leader as her brother
