Chapter Sixteen The ride back to Paris was one of contemptuous silence. The rogue Vogel had virtually kidnapped Martha and she wasn’t happy. She refused to comprehend his German, making the man stumble endlessly with his pigeon French. Thus not much was said. He did impart that German forces would occupy Paris in the next couple of days. He took her to the Hotel Meurice on the Rue de Rivoli, opposite the Jardin des Tuileries which lay adjacent to the River Seine. Within they were met by slavish porters, and an even more subservient under manager. “Monsieur Generale,” he began.
