CHAPTER 4 Carl What the hell am I doing? The storm ended as suddenly as it blew in; the wind slowed in minutes and the snow thinned down to nothing. Everything was blanketed in two feet of snow. After cute little Belle had some bread and goat cheese, I bundled her up and took her to town with her wardrobe in one of my spare duffel bags. I’m doing post-storm damage control, trudging up and down the mountain in my snowshoes to check my wind turbines and wells and to wipe the snow off the solar panels. The livestock’s fine; I checked them first. One of my sugar maples fell and took out part of my goat fence on the way down. Before I let the herd out of their earth-sheltered barn, I need to make sure they can’t go wondering off into the woods to become bear snacks. Cutting through the log
