“Manny, we need to talk.”
“Yes, Becky?”
“It’s Katie… she won’t listen. I can’t get her to leave with us.”
“If she won’t listen, she might have to stay, Becky.”
“What? I can’t just leave her here. She already hates me for what I did. If I leave her, what will she think of me then?”
“Look Becky… I know it’s hard. But listen — I heard the boss talking. They're going to kill you. We need to leave today. Try something. Anything. But get her to listen. Quickly.”
“Okay… I’ll try.”
I went to Katie.
“Hey Katie… can I please have five minutes to explain?”
“Go for it. But not a second more.”
“Okay… look. I didn’t want to do what I did. They said if I didn’t, they would kill me.”
“So instead of fighting together… you chose to hurt me?”
“I know… I know I chose wrong. But listen — we can get out of here together. Katie, they’re going to kill me today if we don’t leave. Please — just consider it. I’m begging you.”
“…Fine. I’ll think about it.”
“Thank you.”
A few hours passed. I was in my cell, talking to Manny, when suddenly Katie came in crying.
“Becky… I’m so sorry for how I treated you.”
“Hey… it’s okay. I treated you worse. I’m sorry too. But if you want to leave with us… we have to go now. It’s our only chance.”
“What about him?”
“Who? Manny?”
“Yeah.”
“He’s okay. He’s with us. But we have to go now, Katie. Otherwise… I’m dead.”
“…Alright. Fine. Let’s get out of this hell.”
And so we did.
We got out.
And we went home.
Though home wasn’t what it used to be.
Now... well… you’ll find out soon.
