Damien didn't sleep.
Not even a little.
Every time he closed his eyes, he saw Ethan.
The bonfire.
The way Ethan had looked at him.
The way neither of them had looked away.
It was driving him insane.
Morning arrived far too quickly.
And somehow Ethan looked just as exhausted.
Good.
At least Damien wasn't suffering alone.
"You look terrible."
Ethan sighed.
"Original."
Neither smiled.
Neither laughed.
The usual banter felt strained.
Awkward.
Like both were carefully avoiding something.
The ranch hands noticed immediately.
Of course they did.
"Did they fight?"
"No."
"Then why are they acting weird?"
"No idea."
Unfortunately everyone had ideas.
Many ideas.
None helpful.
The entire day felt off.
Whenever Damien approached, Ethan found an excuse to leave.
Whenever Ethan came near, Damien suddenly found something else to do.
Neither knew what to say.
By sunset Damien had enough.
He found Ethan repairing a gate near the south pasture.
Alone.
As usual.
"We need to talk."
Ethan froze.
Only briefly.
Then continued working.
"No."
Damien stared.
"What do you mean no?"
"I mean no."
"We're talking."
"We're not."
"Yes, we are."
The cowboy sighed heavily.
Like Damien was the world's biggest headache.
Which was fair.
Finally Ethan set down his tools.
"What?"
The question hung between them.
For a second Damien forgot everything he planned to say.
Because Ethan looked tired.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
And suddenly this felt harder than any argument they'd ever had.
"Something changed."
Silence.
Ethan looked away first.
That was answer enough.
"You noticed too."
The cowboy laughed quietly.
Without humor.
"Kind of impossible not to."
The honesty surprised them both.
Damien stepped closer.
Not much.
Just enough.
"What is this?"
Ethan looked at him.
Really looked at him.
For a long moment neither spoke.
Then Ethan answered.
"I don't know."
The words were simple.
Honest.
Real.
And somehow that made them more dangerous.
Because Damien didn't know either.
All he knew was that somewhere between the horse lessons...
The arguments...
The storm...
And the late-night conversations...
Ethan had become important.
Too important.
The realization scared him.
Apparently it scared Ethan too.
Because the cowboy stepped back.
Creating distance.
"We shouldn't."
Damien frowned.
"Shouldn't what?"
Ethan laughed.
A frustrated laugh.
"This."
The space between them.
The tension.
The feelings neither wanted to name.
Everything.
For a moment neither moved.
The evening breeze rustled through the grass.
The sky above them glowed orange and gold.
Beautiful.
Dangerous.
Just like this moment.
Then Damien spoke quietly.
"You're leaving out one problem."
Ethan raised an eyebrow.
"What problem?"
Damien smiled.
Small.
Nervous.
Real.
"I don't want to stop."
The confession hung between them.
Silence.
Absolute silence.
For a second Ethan simply stared.
Then something softened in his expression.
Something Damien had never seen before.
Hope.
Small.
Fragile.
Terrifying.
Neither moved closer.
Neither touched.
Neither crossed the line.
Not yet.
But for the first time...
They stopped pretending there wasn't a line to cross.
And beneath the fading Texas sky, surrounded by endless fields and open land...
Both men finally admitted the truth.
Whatever was happening between them...
It wasn't going away.
