CHAPTER 4- SIGNED IN SILENCE

809 Words
The office fell into a silence so complete that even the ticking of the antique clock on the wall seemed deafening. Aria stared at Adrian Blackwell as though he had spoken a language she didn't understand. "Pretend to be... your fiancée?" Her voice barely rose above a whisper. Adrian didn't flinch. "Yes." A short, disbelieving laugh escaped her. "This is a joke right?" "It isn't." She pushed the folder back across the desk. "Mr. Blackwell, I came here looking for a job, not..." She searched for the right word. "...whatever this is." "A contract." "No." She stood abruptly, the chair scraping against the marble floor. "A contract is paperwork. This is madness." Adrian remained seated, calm as ever. "If you believe that, you're free to walk away." His lack of emotion only frustrated her more. "You don't even know me." "I know enough." "You know what's on a résumé." "I know you've never been accused of fraud. I know your previous employer described you as dependable. I know you've turned down offers that conflicted with your values. And I know you've spent the last four months trying to keep your family afloat." Aria's heartbeat stumbled. "How do you know that?" "I don't make important decisions without doing my research." She tightened her grip on the folder. "So you investigated me." "I verified who you are." The distinction did little to comfort her. Adrian rose from his chair and walked toward the panoramic windows. The city glowed beneath them, a sea of lights stretching into the horizon. "In two weeks," he said, "Blackwell Holdings will sign the largest merger in its history." He turned to face her. "Investors value stability. The board values image. The media values scandal." He picked up one of the newspaper clippings. "They've decided my personal life has become everyone's business." Aria glanced at the bold headlines again. "So... you need a fake engagement to quiet the rumors?" "I need people to focus on the company instead of my private life." "And you expect me to help you lie to the entire country?" "I expect you to help me protect thousands of employees whose jobs depend on this merger succeeding." His words landed harder than she expected. She wanted to argue. Instead, she found herself asking, "Why me?" Adrian studied her for a long moment. "Because when I asked you why you deserved the job, you didn't pretend to be perfect." She frowned. "Most people tell me what they think I want to hear." "And I didn't." "No." A faint smile appeared for only a second. "You answered honestly." Before Aria could reply, someone knocked. Nathan Brooks stepped inside, carrying a tablet under one arm. He stopped the moment he noticed Aria still in the office. "I hope I'm not interrupting." "You are," Adrian replied evenly. Nathan chuckled. "I'll make this quick." He placed the tablet on the desk. "The board members are asking where you are." "They can wait." Nathan raised an eyebrow. "They're not known for their patience." "They'll survive." Nathan glanced between the two of them, sensing the tension. "I'll give you another ten minutes." As he reached the door, he paused. "Oh... and good luck." The words were directed at Aria. She wasn't sure whether they were comforting or terrifying. When the door closed again, Adrian picked up a sleek black envelope and handed it to her. "Open it." Inside was a contract. Neatly printed. Professionally bound. The figure on the final page made her eyes widen. She read it again. Then a third time. Her lips parted. "You can't be serious." "I am." "That's more money than I've earned in years." "It reflects the responsibility." Aria slowly lowered the papers. "What if I refuse?" "I'll thank you for your time and wish you well." "You won't pressure me?" "No." "You won't threaten me?" "No." "Then why do I feel like my life is about to change?" Adrian's expression softened, almost imperceptibly. "Because it is." The room grew quiet again. Aria looked down at the contract, then back at the man standing before her. Everything about him was controlled. Measured. Impossible to read. Yet beneath that calm exterior, she sensed urgency. Not panic. Not desperation. Something heavier. She slipped the contract back into the envelope. "I need time." "You have forty-eight hours." She nodded once and turned toward the door. Her hand had barely touched the handle when her phone vibrated. Lucas. A smile almost reached her face as she answered. "Hey." Silence. Then his trembling voice. "Aria..." Her smile disappeared. "The landlord came." She froze. "He says... if we don't pay by Monday..." Lucas swallowed hard. "...we have to leave." The call ended. Aria stood motionless, the envelope suddenly feeling much heavier in her hands. For the first time since stepping into Blackwell Holdings... Adrian's impossible offer no longer seemed impossible.
