CHAPTER 3- THE DANGEROUS OFFER

702 Words
The words echoed in Aria's mind. "The position I have in mind... isn't the one you applied for." She stared at Adrian, trying to read the expression on his face. It was impossible. His features remained composed, as though he had simply commented on the weather. "I'm sorry," she said carefully. "I don't understand." "I know." He returned to his chair and gestured toward the one opposite him. "Sit." Aria obeyed, though every instinct urged her to leave. Interviews usually ended with a handshake and a polite rejection—not with cryptic remarks from one of the most powerful CEOs in the country. Adrian folded his hands. "Tell me something, Miss Monroe." She looked up. "If someone offered you the chance to change your life today... what would you be willing to sacrifice?" The question caught her off guard. "My time," she answered after a moment. "Everyone says that." "My comfort, then." "And if that wasn't enough?" She frowned. "I wouldn't sacrifice my integrity." For the first time, Adrian gave a subtle nod, almost as though she'd passed another unseen test. "Interesting." He rose and walked toward the floor-to-ceiling windows, the city stretching endlessly beneath them. "Do you know why Blackwell Holdings has remained at the top for nearly three decades?" Aria shook her head. "Because we don't solve ordinary problems." He turned. "We solve impossible ones." His gaze settled on her again. "I have an impossible problem." Aria couldn't help the small laugh that escaped her. "I applied to be an executive assistant, not a miracle worker." A faint smile ghosted across Adrian's lips. "It appears you're capable of being both." Before she could respond, there was a knock at the door. Nathan Brooks entered, carrying a tablet tucked beneath his arm. He paused the moment he noticed Aria. "So this is the final candidate." Adrian gave a single nod. Nathan extended his hand with an easy smile. "Nathan Brooks. Company legal adviser." "Aria Monroe." "Nice to meet you." Unlike Adrian's intimidating presence, Nathan's warmth filled the room almost instantly. He placed the tablet on the desk. "The board members have arrived." "They can wait." Nathan blinked. "The board?" "They'll survive." It was the first crack Aria had seen in Adrian's perfectly controlled schedule. Nathan glanced at her, clearly surprised, but wisely kept his thoughts to himself. "I'll give you ten minutes." When the door closed again, Adrian slid a sealed envelope across the desk. "Take this." She hesitated. "What is it?" "Open it." Inside was a single sheet of paper. At the top, in bold letters, were the words: STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL Below it sat a salary figure. Aria's breath caught. She blinked once. Then twice. There had to be an extra zero. No... Two extra zeros. "This can't be real." "It is." She looked up, searching his face for any sign that this was some elaborate joke. "I've never earned anything close to this." "I know." "Then why me?" "Because qualifications can be taught." He stepped closer, his voice calm. "Character can't." Her heart pounded. "What exactly would I be doing?" Adrian didn't answer immediately. Instead, he reached for another file from his desk. It was thinner than the first. Far thinner. He placed it in front of her. "My problem isn't inside Blackwell Holdings." His voice grew quieter. "It's outside." Aria slowly opened the folder. The first page wasn't a contract. It wasn't a job description. It was a newspaper clipping. BLACKWELL HOLDINGS CEO SPOTTED WITH MYSTERY WOMAN. WEDDING RUMORS SWIRL. Another headline followed. BOARD QUESTIONS ADRIAN BLACKWELL'S LEADERSHIP AMID PERSONAL SCANDALS. Then another. IS THE COMPANY'S FUTURE AT RISK? Confusion washed over her. "I don't understand." "You will." Adrian met her eyes. "But before I explain anything..." He paused. "I need your word." "My word?" "That whatever you hear in this office today..." His tone was steady, leaving no room for negotiation. "...never leaves this room." The air seemed to still around them. Aria looked at the headlines once more before lifting her gaze back to him. She had come searching for a job. She hadn't expected to become part of a secret. And something told her... Walking away was about to become much harder than walking in.
