Aria stares at Adrian agree he tells her she won't be going anywhere without security. She isn't comfortable with the idea of bodyguards following her everywhere, she hates feeling hopeless and doesn't want to depend on a billionaire she barely knows. She also insists she's just am ordinary woman and doesn't belong in Adrian's dangerous world.
“You can't seriously expect me to walk around with bodyguards”.
Adrian calmly places the phone on his desk. “ I don't expect it, am insisting”.
She raises an eyebrow and laughs nervously. “You really think one call changes everything? ”.
His expression hardens
“No, the fact that someone knew where to find you does”.
Suddenly Aria and Adrian got into a little disagreement and started to argue then footsteps were approaching.
Aria goes quiet and stares at the door wondering who it could be.
Nathan walked in carrying a tablet
“Something is wrong”.
Aria became scared because she wished she didn't go in search of a job to the company in the first place.
Adrian went further to ask Nathan what the problem was.
“Someone leaked information about Aria's visit to the company”.
“This isn't an outsider's handiwork”. Adrian added
Nathan was about leaving then he said “ No one outside the executive floor should have known, that means the leak certainly came from inside Blackwell Holdings”. Then he took his leave
Adrian immediately starts thinking about which executive could benefit from creating chaos.
Adria looked towards Aria
“Should I call my driver to drop you off?”.
“ I came here by myself and I'll leave by doing the same”. She lashed back
“Am not asking you, I insist”
“Dont bother yourself, I don't want any problem”.
“ Nothing is going to happen to you, mark my words” he tried convincing her
“I don't want charity, I can go on my own, am not kid anymore though”.
“Why are you so determined to carry everything alone?” Adrian finally asks
Aria went silent for a few minutes then asked “Why do you suddenly care? ”
“I never said I cared, just answer my question”
“What if I dont have an answer to that question? ” She said while keeping an eye contact with Adrian
“Then look for an answer to defend my question and don't forget that am the boss here”.
Aria rolled hr eyes and finally decided to answer him
“I spent years solving my own problems because there was never anyone else to do it for me, I carry my own cross myself and I got used to it so it will be very hard to adopt to the fact that I'll be getting help from another”.
Aria folded her arms tightly across her chest, as if it could somehow shield her from the man standing in front of her. Adrian Blackwell wasn't raising his voice, yet every word he spoke carried the weight of an order.
The silence between them stretched.
Outside the office, the city continued its endless rhythm cars honking, people moving, deals being made but inside, everything felt strangely still.
"I've lived twenty-four years without bodyguards," Aria muttered. "I'm sure I can survive another day."
Adrian leaned back in his chair, studying her with unreadable eyes.
"And someone tried to find you within hours of you stepping into my company."
His words landed like stones.
For a second, she couldn't answer.
She hated admitting it, but a small part of her wondered if he waseverything.
She quickly buried the thought.
If she started depending on Adrian Blackwell now, she'd never know where it would end.
Adrian's jaw clenched.
"Whoever did this wasn't careless," he said quietly.
"They wanted me to notice."
The temperature in the room suddenly felt colder.
"I came here by myself," she repeated.
"I'll leave the same way."
Adrian let out a slow breath.
"Your pride is becoming dangerous."
"My pride is the only thing that's ever belonged to me."
The words escaped before she could stop them.
For a moment...
Neither of them spoke.
Even Adrian seemed caught off guard.
Aria swallowed.
"When my mother got sick..."
She stopped herself.
Old memories clawed at her chest.
"When bills came, nobody rescued us."
"When we were hungry, nobody knocked on the door."
"I learned very early that if I wanted to survive..."
"I had to become my own rescue."
Her voice didn't shake.
But her eyes betrayed her.
Adrian noticed.
He noticed everything.
Adrian stood.
He walked toward her until only a few inches separated them.
His voice dropped.
"I don't care how independent you think you are."
"From this moment on..."
"Whether you like it or not..."
"You are under my protection."
Before Aria could answer
Nathan burst back into the office without knocking.
"Boss..." His voice shakily, his face had gone pale.
"We've got another problem."
“And what's that?” Adrian became curious
"They've found Aria's home address."
Aria's blood ran cold.
