The Devil's Prison

The inside of the SUV was silent. Rain hammered against the tinted windows, blurring the lights of Blackridge into streaks of gold and white. Elara sat rigidly between two broad-shouldered men dressed in black suits, her hands trembling in her lap. She had stopped struggling. Not because she had given up. Because she was exhausted. Her thoughts kept returning to one person. Mom. She imagined her mother sitting awake in their tiny apartment, coughing into a handkerchief while waiting for the familiar sound of Elara unlocking the front door. Her medicine. She hadn't bought it. Tears stung Elara's eyes. "Please let her be okay." Across from her sat Damien Devereaux. His attention remained fixed on a tablet in his hands as though kidnapping frightened waitresses was simply another item on his schedule. Not once had he looked at her during the drive. His calmness infuriated her. "You can't do this," she whispered. No response. "I have rights." Still nothing. "My mother is sick." The words finally made him look up. Only for a second. "I know." "You... you know?" "You've worked double shifts for eight months to pay for her treatment." Elara's blood ran cold. "How do you know that?" "I make it my business to know the people who cross my path." Cross his path? She hadn't chosen this. "You've ruined my life." Damien regarded her quietly. "No." "You've made assumptions." Before she could answer, the SUV slowed. Massive iron gates rose before them. The words DEEVEREAUX ESTATE were engraved into black stone pillars. Armed guards stepped aside as the gates slowly opened. Elara stared. The driveway stretched endlessly through perfectly trimmed gardens and towering oak trees before revealing a breathtaking mansion overlooking a cliff. It looked less like a home... And more like a fortress. The SUV stopped beneath a grand entrance. One of the guards opened her door. "Miss Hart." She refused to move. "I said get out!" she snapped. The guard simply waited. Damien stepped from the vehicle, buttoning his suit jacket. Without looking back, he said, "Miss Hart..." "If I wanted to imprison you, I wouldn't need to force you out of the car." His confidence annoyed her enough that she climbed out on her own. The mansion was magnificent. Marble steps. Crystal chandeliers visible through enormous windows. Fresh roses lined the entrance despite the storm. Nothing about this place felt like the headquarters of a criminal. A woman in her fifties opened the front door before they reached it. Her silver hair was neatly tied back. She wore a warm smile. "Welcome home, Mr. Devereaux." Damien nodded. "Mrs. Bennett." His tone softened ever so slightly. Interesting. He could be polite. Mrs. Bennett turned toward Elara. "Oh, sweetheart..." She noticed Elara's soaked clothes immediately. "You're freezing." Elara blinked. She hadn't expected kindness. "Prepare the blue guest room," Damien instructed. "And ask Dr. Lawson to examine Miss Hart." "I'm fine," Elara said quickly. Damien ignored her. Mrs. Bennett smiled gently. "Come with me, dear." "I don't need—" "You need dry clothes." For the first time since the nightmare began... Someone spoke to her like a human being. She reluctantly followed. The bedroom stole her breath. The bed alone was larger than the apartment she shared with her mother. Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the sea. A fireplace crackled softly. Fresh clothes had already been laid neatly on the bed. This wasn't a prison cell. It was luxury. Which somehow made it more frightening. Mrs. Bennett disappeared after assuring Elara she'd return with tea. The moment the door clicked shut... Elara ran. She rushed toward the balcony. The doors opened easily. Hope surged inside her. Then disappeared. The balcony overlooked a forty-foot drop onto jagged rocks below. She hurried back inside and tried the bedroom door. Locked. Her chest tightened. She was trapped. A knock echoed through the room. The door opened. Damien entered alone. He closed the door behind him. Neither spoke. He studied the untouched clothes on the bed before meeting her eyes. "You were planning to jump." "I was planning to escape." "The result would've been the same." She folded her arms. "What do you want from me?" "The truth." "I already told you the truth." "No." He took another step. "You told me what you think I wanted to hear." She glared at him. "You think because you're rich and powerful you can control everyone." "I don't control everyone." He paused. "Only the people who give me reason to." "You kidnapped me!" "I protected you." She laughed bitterly. "Protected me?" "You watched a meeting involving people whose names never appear in newspapers." "So?" "So those people don't leave witnesses alive." The room fell silent. Elara searched his face. He wasn't joking. Her heartbeat slowed. "You're lying." "I rarely lie." "Then let me go." "I can't." "Why?" "Because by sunrise..." He looked toward the rain-covered windows. "...someone will already know your name." A chill swept through her. "What are you talking about?" Instead of answering, Damien removed his phone from his pocket. He placed it on the table before her. Elara couldn't tear her eyes away from the photographs. One showed her leaving Luna Noir. Another showed her apartment building. The last one... Her mother, asleep in the old armchair by the living room window. A sob caught in Elara's throat. "They've been watching us..." Her voice was barely audible. Damien said nothing. His silence was answer enough. Fear wrapped around her like ice. "What do they want from me?" "They don't want you." He looked directly into her eyes. "They want what you know." "But I don't know anything!" "You know enough." His words landed like a death sentence. Elara shook her head. "I'm just a waitress." "Not anymore." The room fell silent. Outside, thunder rolled across the cliffs, rattling the tall windows. For the first time since entering the mansion, Elara noticed the surveillance cameras tucked discreetly into the corners of the ceiling. The locked doors. The guards patrolling the grounds below. The Devereaux Estate wasn't merely luxurious. It was designed to withstand a siege. A beautiful prison. Damien walked toward the rain-streaked window. For the first time that night... He allowed himself a brief moment of thought. She was never supposed to be involved. One wrong step. One frightened waitress. Years of carefully built alliances were beginning to crack. He couldn't afford another mistake. A knock interrupted his thoughts. The bedroom door opened. Ethan, Damien's head of security, entered without hesitation. His usually composed face was tense. "Sir." Damien turned. "What is it?" "We found the traitor." "And?" "He's dead." A flicker of annoyance crossed Damien's face. "Before we reached him." Ethan nodded. "There was something else." "Speak." "They've identified the witness." Elara's stomach tightened. "They know her name." The room seemed to shrink around her. Ethan continued. "Ten million dollars." Elara frowned. "What?" "A bounty." He looked at Damien. "They're offering ten million dollars to anyone who delivers Miss Hart alive." Alive. The word echoed in her mind. Her legs weakened. She gripped the edge of the table to steady herself. "This... this can't be happening." Damien's expression remained unreadable. "It already is." He turned to Ethan. "Double the guards." "Already done." "No one enters this estate without my permission." "Yes, sir." "And move two snipers to the eastern ridge." Ethan hesitated. "You believe they'll attack tonight?" Damien looked through the rain-covered glass toward the dark forest surrounding the estate. Lightning illuminated the trees for the briefest second. Then everything disappeared into darkness again. His jaw tightened. "I don't believe." His voice was cold enough to send chills through the room. "I know." Another clap of thunder shook the mansion. Far beyond the estate gates... Hidden among the trees... A lone figure lowered a pair of binoculars. Into a radio, he whispered, "The girl is inside." A crackling voice answered. "Then bring her to us." The transmission ended. The hunter smiled. And somewhere deep within the storm... The hunt had already begun.
