Chapter 6 Progression

1279 Words
"Sodor?" Saru rubbed his beard as a figure suddenly flashed through his mind, "Viscount Sudor of Ice Rock is?" "None other than my father." Colin's face did not change as he gave himself a new father. Ever since he found out that the leader of the Fire Fox mercenary regiment in front of him was not easy to fool, Collin understood that he would have to be a little more tactful if he lied again, and not as unreliable as the old mercenary he had found for twenty copper coins before. The man Karn Sudol was real. Of course, Colin didn't know this guy well at all, having merely learned the name and his recent encounters from a recent letter from his sister Caitlin. And it was precisely because of this fellow Kahn's recent tragic encounter that Colin chose to impersonate this man, making his appearance as a knight in a place like the Bearded Tavern seem plausible. "I heard that three months ago, Ice Rock City was overrun by trolls?" Saru naturally associated himself with the news he had heard earlier. "That's right." Collin nodded somewhat lost, while resentment, hatred, anger ...... and other deserved emotions surfaced in his eyes, and the acting skills that broke out in this moment surprised himself a little. Saru seemed to be deceived as well and sighed, "I heard that your father would rather die than retreat and die with the city ...... is indeed an honorable knight!" "Thank you." Colin seemed to be holding back tears as he asked with red eyes, "You knew my father?" "Oh, no. I have only admired Viscount Sudol for a long time." Colin breathed a great sigh of relief. A real Viscount and a mercenary captain, these two were not even from the same world, and if this was even a mutual acquaintance, then Colin thought he was really unlucky. "So, Mr. Saru, can I follow your mercenary regiment to Fallen Eagle City?" The reason why Colin wanted to go to Falling Eagle was because his sister, Caitlin Angley, was there. In this current crisis-ridden situation, only relatives with blood ties could be trusted by him. And since his father was still fighting on the front line, Collin would have to go and seek the help of his own sister. "Of course." Saru finally believed Colin's fabricated identity. Moreover, he even thought he had guessed the reason for Colin's trip to Fallen Eagle: "I remember that the wife of Count Uman, the Lord of Fallen Eagle, is none other than Viscount Sudol's sister, so you are going to join your aunt this time, right?" "That's right." In fact, Colin had learned from his sister's letter that the real Karn Sudor had arrived at Fallen Eagle long ago and had become a knight under Count Uman, and was currently discussing with the Count how to regain the fief of the Sudor family. But apparently, Saru was unaware of this news. He was now no longer suspicious of Colin's fabricated identity. A fallen knight who had lost his fief and was desperate for help from his aunt in Fallen Eagle. It made perfect sense. "The caravan that hired us will meet in front of the Bearded Tavern tomorrow morning at eight o'clock." "Yes, I'll show up on time." "Haha, now then, honourable knight of Kahn, let me buy you a glass of ale!" "With pleasure." ---------- Day Two. The weather was overcast and the grey mist made the path through the wilderness harder and more treacherous. This is exactly why Colin had to find a caravan to travel with, otherwise, with his apprentice knight's strength, he would have been killed by a band of thieves or beasts in the wilderness if he had gone alone on the road. I don't know if it was because of the large number of people in the group, or because of the reputation of the Firefox Mercenaries, but the first day of the journey was uneventful. By nightfall, the experienced Saru leader found a place to camp that was backed by a hill and not far from a water source. Colin built a fire, boiled some water, and then softened the hard bread and stuffed it into his stomach. He couldn't taste it now anyway, so it didn't matter how good the food was. The kitten had long since run away, presumably off on its own to hunt for food. Sure enough, it wasn't long before he was seen returning with a mouse in his mouth. And by this time, Colin had taken out the parchment scroll he carried with him and added another sentence to it: [Human blood can help with advancement.] Yes, Colin found himself advancing, from apprentice knight to first-rank knight. It had taken him three years to go from apprentice to full rank! The reason for his sudden advancement was the blood of the assassin he had consumed the night before. After drinking the blood that night, Colin had noticed that his body had started to heat up slightly, but he hadn't paid much attention to it at the time because of the critical situation. The fever continued for the next two days, and only subsided at noon today. Then, he noticed that he had advanced. Since there was no such feverish reaction if he drank deer blood, that was why Colin guessed that it was the human blood. Of course, he had another guess. Carter, the assassin that Collin had killed in return, was a first-rank knight, so perhaps only the blood of a professional would have helped him advance. Anyway, this guess had yet to be further tested. "Is that Elvish?" Colin turned around and saw a chubby middle-aged man standing behind him, staring at the writing on the parchment scroll and guessing smugly. "Yes." Seeing the other man probing, Colin was a little offended, so he put away the parchment scroll while casually snubbing it. He recognised the fat man as the owner of the caravan, named Oliver. "I didn't expect the Knight of Karn to be so knowledgeable that he was even proficient in Elvish!" Oliver immediately offered a flattery, and then sat down beside Colin in a very self-effacing manner. "Just a little knowledge." Colin frowned slightly, he didn't have a good feeling about merchants like Oliver. In his opinion, these profit-seeking businessmen were too purposeful in their actions, and now they were definitely planning something by taking the initiative to ingratiate themselves. "Is this your pet?" Oliver looked at the kitten that was fighting with the dead mouse and began to run out of things to say. "Yes." "You have such a joie de vivre!" Oliver's face smiled as if it were a daisy, "Does it have a name?" Colin froze, not seeming to see the need for a name for this 'mobile blood bag', but then he played it off, "It's called White." "White?" Oliver looked at the pure blue shorthair by the fire, his smile visibly choked and then immediately returned to normal, "What a great name!" "Mr Oliver." Colin smiled back, "How hypocritical of you." "Thank you very much for the compliment!" Oliver was not at all amused, his cheekiness was astonishing. The two men then chatted, and after getting to know each other a little better, Oliver suddenly lowered his voice and said: "Knight Kahn, if you want to regain the fief of the Sudol family, I may be able to offer you some help!" Colin, who had been drowsy, was suddenly refreshed and turned his head to look at the chubby merchant beside him with a wry smile: "Do you know what you are talking about?"
