Chapter 2: The Strange Awakening

239 Words
Elena sat by the window, the moonlight washing over her pale face. Three days had passed since that fateful night, and nothing in her world felt the same anymore. Whenever she closed her eyes, strange sounds echoed in her ears: distant footsteps, the rustle of leaves, even the heartbeat of someone passing on the street below. Her sense of smell had sharpened too—just a faint breeze carried the metallic tang of dried blood. “What… is happening to me?” Elena whispered, clutching her shoulder. The bite still ached, but strangely, the wound was healing faster than any she had ever had. She began avoiding people. At dinner, when her mother asked why she wouldn’t eat, Elena only forced a smile. How could she admit that normal food now tasted bland, while the smell of raw meat in the kitchen made her pulse race? That night, the fever returned, fiercer than before. Her body burned, bones felt like they were breaking and reforming. Elena collapsed on the floor, gasping for breath. Then suddenly, a voice echoed in her mind—not from outside, but from within: “Awaken…” She screamed, trembling violently. In the mirror across the room, her eyes were no longer their gentle brown. They glowed a burning gold, shining in the dark. Elena crumpled to the floor. And for the first time, she realized a terrifying truth: she was no longer entirely human.
