CHAPTER 21: CONSEQUENCES

1167 Words
Klein woke early the next morning, his body still sore from yesterday's training. He checked his system interface...a habit he'd developed since awakening...and saw a notification waiting. NEW QUEST AVAILABLE: VISIT EQUIPMENT SHOP Reward: Skill Enhancement Opportunity Klein blinked at the screen. His system rarely gave him direct quests like this. He dismissed it for now and got dressed. The guild hall was quiet at this hour, most members still sleeping. Klein made his way to the cafeteria and grabbed a simple breakfast...rice, eggs, and some fruit. He was halfway through eating when Boomer's voice boomed across the room. "Klein! My office, now!" Klein set down his fork and followed Boomer upstairs. The Guild Master's office door was already open, Seris waiting inside with her arms crossed. "Sit," Boomer said, his usual grin absent. Klein sat, tension building in his chest. "What's going on?" "I heard about your encounter with Darius yesterday," Boomer said. "Raze reported it to me." "It was just words," Klein said. "Nothing happened." "Not yet." Seris's golden eyes were hard. "But Raze was right to be concerned. I've been reviewing Darius's recent behavior, and there are... patterns." She pulled out a tablet and showed Klein a series of mission reports. "Three months ago, Darius was on a C-rank gate mission with a team of five. One member...a Rank 15 who'd recently passed him...died from what was ruled an accidental monster attack. Two months ago, similar incident. Different team, different gate, same result...someone ranked higher than Darius died in circumstances that were suspicious but not provable." Klein's stomach turned. "You think he's been killing people?" "I think he's been creating opportunities for people to die," Seris said carefully. "There's a difference, legally. But the pattern is concerning." Boomer leaned forward. "Here's the problem. We don't have proof. Everything looks like bad luck or poor judgment calls. But with what happened yesterday, I'm putting you on restricted mission status." "What does that mean?" "It means you don't go on any missions with Darius present," Boomer said. "And we'll be watching him closely. If he makes a move against you or anyone else, we'll have grounds to expel him." Klein nodded slowly. "What about my training?" "Keep at it, but don't train alone in isolated areas," Seris said. "Stick to public training halls where there are witnesses." After the meeting, Klein decided to follow up on his system's quest. He left the guild hall and headed into the city. The equipment shop he'd been meaning to visit was in the merchant district...a high-end establishment that catered specifically to System Bearers. The building was modest from outside, but Klein's chaos sensitivity detected powerful enchantments woven into its walls. A bell chimed as he entered. The interior was larger than it should be...spatial expansion enchantments, Klein realized. Weapons lined the walls, armor stood on display mannequins, and accessories glittered in glass cases. "Welcome!" A middle-aged woman emerged from the back room. She had kind eyes and graying hair pulled into a neat bun. Her system identifier read: Rank Unknown, System Type: Artisan's Touch. "I'm looking to have something made," Klein said, pulling the Corrupted Dragon Scale from his inventory. The woman's eyes widened. "Is that... legendary material?" "Yeah. From the A-rank gate raid last month." She approached carefully, examining the scale without touching it. "Corrupted Dragon Scale. The chaotic energy is still active...you can see it pulsing through the veins." She looked up at Klein. "What did you have in mind?" "Gauntlets," Klein said. "Something that can enhance my striking power and help channel my chaos attribute." The woman nodded thoughtfully. "I can do that. But working with corrupted materials is dangerous and time-consuming. The crafting fee will be twenty thousand credits, and it'll take one to two weeks." Klein had earned fifty thousand from the dragon fight. Twenty thousand was steep, but worth it. "How much upfront?" "Ten thousand now, ten thousand on delivery." Klein transferred the credits and handed over the scale. The woman took it with gloved hands, already muttering to herself about design possibilities. "I'll contact you when they're ready," she said. "This is going to be a masterpiece." Klein left the shop feeling satisfied. New equipment would give him an edge, especially if Darius tried something. He was walking back toward the guild when his chaos sensitivity screamed a warning. Klein dodged instinctively. An ice bolt shot past his head, so close he felt the cold burn his cheek. It slammed into a wall behind him, freezing the brick solid. Klein spun, his scales appearing automatically. Darius stood on a rooftop across the street, another ice bolt forming in his hand. "You couldn't leave well enough alone, could you?" Darius shouted. "Had to go running to Boomer like a coward!" Klein's mind raced. They were in public, in broad daylight. Darius was either insane or desperate. "This is illegal!" Klein called back. "System Bearers attacking each other outside sanctioned matches..." "I don't care anymore!" Darius launched another ice bolt. Klein activated his wings and launched himself into the air, dodging the attack. The bolt hit a parked car, flash-freezing it solid. Civilians were screaming, running for cover. Darius created an ice platform under his feet and launched himself toward Klein. They met mid-air, and Darius swung an ice-coated fist at Klein's head. Klein blocked with his gauntleted forearm, the impact sending shockwaves through the air. They broke apart, both hovering. "You've lost it," Klein said. "Maybe!" Darius's eyes were wild. "But I'm tired of watching talentless nobodies get everything while I'm stuck in the mud!" He activated his system's domain ability. Frost spread through the air in a fifty-foot radius, the temperature plummeting. Klein felt his movements slow slightly, his flames suppressed. Darius's Frost King System was A-grade...powerful, but not as versatile as Klein's S-grade Divine Archfiend System. Klein used Essence Harvest, absorbing residual energy from the ice around him. He gained temporary resistance to cold, negating most of Darius's domain effect. "You want to fight?" Klein's voice was cold. "Fine." He shot forward, his speed catching Darius off guard. Klein's fist connected with Darius's stomach, and the enhanced strength from his Archfiend body sent Darius flying backward. Darius crashed into an air conditioning unit on a nearby rooftop, metal crumpling around him. Klein landed on the same roof, walking toward Darius slowly. "This is your only warning," Klein said. "Stand down." Darius struggled to his feet, coughing blood. His eyes were full of hatred, but also fear. For a moment, Klein thought he might actually give up. Then Darius created an ice blade and lunged. Klein sighed and caught the blade with his bare hand, shattering it. His other fist drove into Darius's ribs, and Klein felt bones crack. Darius collapsed, gasping for air. Police sirens wailed in the distance. System Bearer response teams would arrive soon. Klein stepped back, his scales fading. "It's over." Darius looked up at him with pure hatred. "This isn't... over..." "Yeah," Klein said quietly. "It is."
