CHAPTER 16: NEW HORIZONS

Klein spent the next three days recovering. The fight with Seris had pushed him beyond his limits, leaving his body battered and his mana reserves completely drained. He stayed home, resting in bed while Mara brought him food and checked on him every few hours. "You really went all out, didn't you?" Mara asked, setting down a tray of soup on his bedside table. "Had to," Klein replied, sitting up slowly. His muscles still ached, but the pain was fading. "If I'm going to get stronger, I need to know what real power looks like." Mara frowned. "You're already strong, big brother. Why do you keep pushing yourself so hard?" Klein looked at her, his expression softening. "Because the world isn't kind to the weak. I learned that the hard way." He reached over and patted her head. "I'm doing this so you and Gramps never have to worry again." Mara's eyes watered slightly, but she blinked the tears away. "Just... don't overdo it, okay?" "I won't." After she left, Klein pulled up his system interface. A notification was waiting for him. QUEST COMPLETED: PUSH YOUR LIMITS Reward: Skill Evolution Token Klein stared at the notification, then selected it. A new item appeared in his inventory...a glowing golden token that pulsed with energy. "Skill Evolution Token," Klein read aloud. "Allows the user to evolve one existing skill to its next form." He scrolled through his skill list, considering which one to upgrade. His passive skills were already strong, and his active abilities like Storm's Breath and Archfiend Wings were reliable. But one skill stood out...Dragonic Devour. It was listed as a single-use skill, already consumed when he'd absorbed Storm's essence. But the description had changed since then. Dragonic Devour (Dormant) Description: This skill has been used once and is now dormant. Evolution may unlock new potential. Klein selected the skill and used the token. The interface glowed brightly, and text began to scroll across the screen. EVOLVING SKILL: DRAGONIC DEVOUR EVOLUTION COMPLETE NEW SKILL ACQUIRED: ESSENCE HARVEST Essence Harvest (Active, Level: 1) Description: Absorb a portion of a defeated enemy's power, gaining temporary stat boosts and partial access to their abilities. Duration: 10 minutes. Cooldown: 24 hours. Klein read the description twice, his eyes widening. This was incredible. He could now steal abilities from his opponents, even if only temporarily. The strategic possibilities were endless. "This changes everything," Klein muttered. A knock on his door interrupted his thoughts. "Come in," he called. Adonis entered, his weathered face creased with concern. "You feeling better?" "Much better, Gramps." The old man sat down in the chair beside the bed. "I heard about your fight with that Seris woman. Boomer sent a messenger to check on you." Klein raised an eyebrow. "He did?" "Said you put up a hell of a fight. Said you've got potential to be one of the greats." Adonis smiled. "I'm proud of you, Klein. Your parents would be too." Klein felt a lump form in his throat. He'd spent so many years feeling worthless, believing he'd never amount to anything. Hearing those words from his grandfather meant more than any system or skill ever could. "Thanks, Gramps." Adonis stood, patting Klein's shoulder. "Get some rest. You've got a big day tomorrow." "Tomorrow?" "Boomer wants you at the guild hall. Something about an initiation ceremony." Klein groaned. "Of course he does." --- The next morning, Klein arrived at the Titan's Fist Guild Hall. The place was packed with members, all gathered in the main training hall. Banners hung from the walls, and a makeshift stage had been set up in the center. Raze spotted him first. "There he is! Come on, newbie. You're the star of the show today." Klein followed her to the stage, where Boomer and Seris were already waiting. The guild members cheered as he climbed the steps, their energy infectious. Boomer raised his hand, and the crowd fell silent. "Today, we welcome a new member to Titan's Fist!" His voice boomed across the hall. "Klein S'roar, the Divine Archfiend System Bearer who defeated Vax the Shining Star and went toe-to-toe with our own Void Empress!" The crowd erupted in applause. Klein felt his face heat up, unused to this kind of attention. "Klein represents everything this guild stands for," Boomer continued. "Strength, determination, and the will to keep pushing forward no matter what. From this day forward, he's one of us!" Seris stepped forward, holding a silver badge shaped like a fist. She pinned it to Klein's chest, her golden eyes meeting his. "Don't disappoint us," she said quietly, a hint of a smile on her lips. "I won't," Klein replied. The ceremony continued with more speeches and congratulations, but Klein's mind was elsewhere. He scanned the crowd, noticing the different faces and personalities. Some looked friendly, others competitive, and a few downright hostile. This was his new family, for better or worse. After the ceremony ended, Raze pulled Klein aside. "Now that you're officially a member, you need to know the rules." "I thought there were no rules," Klein said. "There aren't many," Raze corrected. "But the ones we have are important. First, never betray a guild member. Second, always show up for mandatory missions. Third, respect the ranking system." "Ranking system?" Raze nodded. "We're not like other guilds with strict hierarchies, but we do have a ranking ladder. It's based on strength and contribution. You start at the bottom and work your way up by challenging higher-ranked members or completing difficult missions." Klein frowned. "Where do I rank?" "You're starting at Rank 50 out of 60 members." Raze smirked at his expression. "Don't look so offended. You just joined. Prove yourself, and you'll climb fast." "Who's Rank 1?" "Seris. She's been undefeated for three years." Raze's tone was respectful. "Boomer is Rank 2. I'm Rank 3. The top 10 are all monsters in their own right." Klein nodded slowly. "How do I challenge someone?" "Just ask. If they accept, you fight in the arena. Win, and you take their rank. Lose, and you stay where you are." Raze crossed her arms. "But I'd recommend training first. Most people here won't go easy on you just because you're new." "Good," Klein said. "I don't want them to." Raze laughed. "You really are a perfect fit for this place." --- Over the next few weeks, Klein threw himself into training. He sparred with other guild members, learning their fighting styles and testing his new Essence Harvest skill whenever he got the chance. The ability was as powerful as he'd hoped, giving him temporary access to his opponents' techniques. He also started climbing the ranking ladder. His first challenge was against Rank 49, a burly man named Garrick who wielded a massive war hammer. Klein won in under a minute, his speed and scales overwhelming Garrick's strength. His second challenge was against Rank 45, a woman named Lyra who used an archer system. That fight was trickier, but Klein's Archfiend Wings gave him the mobility to close the distance and finish the match. By the end of the month, Klein had climbed to Rank 30. He was making waves in the guild, and people were starting to take notice. "You're moving fast," Seris commented one day during a training session. She watched him spar with another member, her arms crossed. "At this rate, you'll crack the top 10 within a year." Klein wiped sweat from his brow. "That's the plan." " Just don't burn yourself out," Seris warned. "There's a difference between pushing your limits and breaking yourself." Klein nodded, but her words barely registered. He was too focused on his goal. Every fight brought him closer to the strength he needed. Every rank he climbed proved he was more than the worthless Blank he used to be. He wouldn't stop until he reached the top.
