CHAPTER 23: MECHANICAL MENACE

758 Words
Klein woke to pounding on his door. "Klein! Emergency meeting!" Raze's voice was urgent. He dressed quickly and found the guild's top members gathering in the main hall. Boomer stood on the stage, his expression grim. "Listen up!" Boomer's voice cut through the murmuring. "We've got a situation. A New B-rank Dungeon Gate opened overnight in the industrial zone. Council wants it cleared before it destabilizes." Seris stepped forward. "This isn't a standard gate. Preliminary scans show mechanical energy signatures...we're dealing with construct-type enemies." Klein had read about mechanical monsters. They were rare but dangerous, lacking traditional weak points and often possessing self-repair capabilities. "The mission team will be myself, Klein, Raze, Marcus, Finn, and Lyssa," Seris continued, gesturing to a woman Klein hadn't worked with before. She had dark skin, silver hair, and carried an ornate staff. "Lyssa has the Elemental Sage System," Seris explained. "Her lightning attacks are effective against mechanical enemies. Klein, you'll focus on high-impact damage. Marcus, standard tanking. Finn, reconnaissance and joint targeting. Raze, explosive ordinance on weak points." "What about the Winters situation?" Klein asked. "On hold for now," Boomer said. "The formal challenge hasn't been issued yet. You've got time." Two hours later, Klein stood before the Dungeon Gate with his team. The portal was gray instead of the usual purple, with a metallic sheen that reminded Klein of oil slicks. Other guilds had sent teams too. Klein spotted Vax in the distance, leading a Garrison Whites contingent. The Sword Saint caught Klein's eye and gave a respectful nod. "Standard formation," Seris said. "Marcus leads, I'll coordinate from center, Klein and Lyssa provide offense, Finn scouts ahead, Raze handles support fire. Ready?" Everyone nodded. They stepped through the gate. Klein's senses were immediately assaulted. Instead of a natural landscape, they found themselves in a massive factory...endless conveyor belts, grinding gears, hissing steam pipes, and towering machinery that moved with mechanical precision. The air smelled of oil and ozone. The temperature was uncomfortably warm. "Stay alert," Seris warned. Something moved in the shadows. A figure stepped into the light...seven feet tall, humanoid but clearly artificial. Its body was constructed from steel and copper, with glowing red optical sensors for eyes. More emerged behind it, dozens of them. Klein's system provided information: AUTOMATED GUARDIAN MK-VII Level: 12 Threat Level: Medium "Contact!" Marcus raised his shield as the guardians charged. Klein activated his Archfiend Talons and met the first guardian head-on. His claws scraped against its armor, leaving deep gouges but not destroying it immediately. These things were tough. Raze fired explosive arrows at the guardian's joints, and Klein heard satisfying crunches as components broke. The guardian stumbled, and Klein followed up with an enhanced punch that caved in its chest cavity. It collapsed, but more were coming. Lyssa raised her staff, and lightning arced from the tip. It struck three guardians simultaneously, and Klein saw their systems overload...sparks flew from joints, optical sensors shattered, and they collapsed in smoking heaps. "Lightning is super effective!" Lyssa called out. "Keep them grouped for me!" The team adjusted tactics. Marcus herded guardians together with his shield. Finn used shadows to blind their sensors and force them to cluster. When enough grouped up, Lyssa unleashed devastating lightning attacks that fried their circuits. Klein focused on stragglers, his enhanced strength and Archfiend body allowing him to tear through metal that would resist normal weapons. They pushed deeper into the factory, fighting wave after wave of guardians. Klein lost count after fifty were destroyed. "This is too many," Finn said, appearing beside Klein. "Something is manufacturing them faster than we can destroy them." "The boss is probably a factory core," Seris said. "We need to find and destroy it." They pressed forward through the mechanical maze. The factory seemed endless, each section identical to the last...gears, conveyor belts, assembly lines producing more guardians. After what felt like hours, they reached a massive chamber. In the center stood something that made Klein's breath catch. It was enormous...thirty feet tall, vaguely humanoid but with four arms instead of two. Its body was constructed from what looked like bronze and gold, and molten metal flowed through transparent tubes running across its frame like veins. It wielded a massive hammer in two hands and had what appeared to be missile launchers mounted on its shoulders. FORGE MASTER Level: 14 Threat Level: Extreme "Positions!" Seris commanded. The Forge Master's optical sensors locked onto them. Its voice boomed, artificial but somehow menacing: "INTRUDERS DETECTED. INITIATING TERMINATION PROTOCOL." It raised its hammer and brought it down.
