The Heisenberg Fracture
Chapter 19: The Principal's Bargain
---
Principal Chen stepped into the control room, her heels clicking on the metal grate like a countdown. She was dressed in her usual dark blazer and pencil skirt, immaculate despite the hour, her gray hair pulled into its customary bun. The gun in her hand was small—a compact semiautomatic, matte black, the kind that fit in a purse or a desk drawer. It looked absurd against her principal-ly demeanor, like a stapler that had been designed to kill.
Dr. Vance stumbled ahead of her, her hands cuffed behind her back, a bruise blooming on her cheek. She'd been hit. Recently. Her eyes found Kaelen's, and she shook her head almost imperceptibly. Don't. Not for me.
"Close the door," Chen said.
The two men behind her—Lyra operatives, dressed in the same gray suits as the ones at the assembly—pulled the steel door shut. The wheel spun, locking them in. The control room's emergency lights cast everything in a sickly amber glow.
"I have to admit," Chen said, circling the console, "I underestimated you, Kaelen. Most scholarship kids are so grateful for the opportunity that they never ask questions. They take the free tuition, the subsidized meals, the 'mentorship' opportunities, and they never once wonder what's expected in return."
"I wondered," Kaelen said. His hand was in his pocket, fingers curled around the transmitter. Not the dead one—the rebuilt one. Still warm. Still charged. "I just didn't care until you threatened my mother."
"Threatened? We saved your mother. That oxygen machine has kept her alive for two extra years. The Lyra Foundation paid for the upgrades. The remote monitoring ensured that if she ever stopped breathing, emergency services would be alerted within seconds." Chen's smile was thin and cold. "We're not villains, Kaelen. We're pragmatists. We invest in people who can change the world, and sometimes those people need… incentives."
"You put a kill switch in her machine."
"A failsafe. In case she ever became a liability. Or you did." Chen stopped in front of him, close enough that he could smell her perfume—something floral, expensive, cloying. "But that's not the point. The point is that you've done something remarkable. You stabilized the Fracture. You collapsed a billion timelines into a single, coherent reality. Do you understand what that means?"
"It means I won."
"It means you've proven that a human mind can impose order on quantum chaos without being destroyed. Thorne couldn't do it. His son couldn't do it. But you—a seventeen-year-old boy with a soldering iron and a dying mother—you did it in one night." Her eyes glittered. "Do you have any idea what Lyra would pay for that ability?"
Kaelen looked at Vance. She was watching him with an expression he couldn't read—fear, maybe, or hope, or both.
"I'm not for sale," he said.
"Everyone is for sale. You just haven't heard the right offer yet." Chen reached into her blazer and pulled out a folded piece of paper. She laid it on the console. "Your mother's medical records. The pulmonary fibrosis is progressing faster than we anticipated. Even with the oxygen machine, even with her current medication, she has maybe four months left."
Kaelen's chest tightened.
"But there's a timeline," Chen continued, "where a new treatment exists. A gene therapy developed in Oslo, tested in Zurich, approved in Japan. It's not available here. Not yet. But Lyra can make it available. For you. In exchange for your cooperation."
"Cooperation doing what?"
"Sitting in the chair. Not as a battery—as a pilot. The Fracture is stable now. It needs someone who can navigate the timelines without scattering. Someone with your unique neural signature. You'd be the first conscious observer in history. You'd see everything. Know everything. And you'd help Lyra choose the right future."
Kaelen looked at the transmitter in his hand. Then at Vance. Then at Chen's gun.
"No," he said.
Chen's smile didn't waver. "I was hoping you'd say that."
She raised the gun and pointed it at Vance's head.
"Then let's start with her."
