I led her toward the monorail track, and we strolled at the edge of the shadow cast by the concrete wall towering above us. She laced her fingers in mine, and held my hand in both of hers. We walked south, away from our homes, away from Kyer’s house, each step giving me another ounce of courage.
Finally, when we were far enough from the platforms around us for our voices not to carry, I stopped. “Brin,” I said, shaking my hand from hers. “I…there’s something you need to know.”
She looked up at me, a faint smile on her face. “About what?”
