When I woke in the morning, my mind was made up. I had to get outside the Colony. But how? The monorail track encircled us, blocking off the world beyond with a pair of parallel concrete walls, between which ran the track. Because the track was elevated, we couldn’t see anything of the world beyond from the ground. When on the train, we caught a bit of ocean and the cloud cover over the top of the outer wall, but nothing else. On the inner wall, the side facing the Colony, the platforms were staggered every dozen yards or so, raised to the height of the track by thick, concrete steps. A beam ran down the center, between the inner and outer walls, and the monorail straddled the beam.
