Jay looked brighter, more energetic, swinging his legs under the blanket like he'd been waiting impatiently. "Anna! Blake!" he chirped. "Doc said my levels are improving." "That's great news," Anna said, kissing his forehead. Blake ruffled Jay's hair. "You're getting stronger, champ." Jay grinned. "So... that means I can go home with you soon, right?" Anna groaned softly. "Jay..." The doctor laughed kindly. "Let's see how things progress over the next few days. But it's not impossible." Jay's eyes sparkled with pure joy. After the doctor left, Jay grabbed Anna's hand. "Can you stay a little longer?" "Of course," she whispered. He turned to Blake. "And you?" Blake didn't hesitate. "I'll stay." Jay nodded, satisfied. Then he scooted over in the bed. "Sit." Anna sat on his left. Blake sat on the right. Jay beamed, then reached under his blanket, pulling out a messy sheet of paper. "What's that?" Anna asked. "My drawing!" Jay said proudly. "I made it last night." He unfolded it - uneven lines, bright colors, the kind of childlike imagination that made Anna's heart swell. The drawing showed three stick figures. One with long hair. One very tall. One small in the middle. And above them, written in shaky handwriting: "My Family." Anna choked. Blake went still. Jay watched their reactions excitedly. "That's me, and that's Anna, and that's you, Blake. I had to draw your sleeves rolled up because you always do that." Blake looked at the tiny blue stick figure with rolled-up sleeves, and his lips parted just slightly - a crack in the stoic mask he liked to wear. "It's... beautiful," Anna whispered, wiping a new tear. Jay beamed. "I knew you'd like it. I wanted to give it to you." "Me?" Anna asked, voice trembling. Jay shook his head, then pointed at Blake. "No. Him." Anna blinked, stunned. Blake froze, staring at Jay. "Me?" "You said you won't leave," Jay said simply, nudging the drawing into Blake's hands. "So you should have it." Anna covered her mouth. Blake stared at the paper like it was the most delicate thing he had ever held. His fingers brushed the edges carefully - almost reverently. "Thank you," he whispered. And for the first time, his voice wasn't controlled. It wasn't polished or masked. It was raw. Jay nodded proudly. "Now you have to keep it forever." "I will," Blake said, voice steadying. "I promise." Jay settled back, yawning. "Good. Families share things." Anna's gaze softened so much it felt like melting. Something warm spread in her chest - hope, fear, joy, disbelief, all tangled together. As Jay drifted into another light nap, Anna whispered, "He's getting attached to you." Blake didn't take his eyes off the drawing. "I'm getting attached to him too." Anna inhaled sharply. Blake finally looked up at her, eyes dark, steady, sincere. "And to you." Anna's lips parted, breath escaping in a shaky whisper. "Blake..." He leaned forward slightly, his voice low and slow. "I'm not running from this anymore." Her heart thudded painfully, loudly. Then Jay murmured in his sleep, "Love you, Anna... love you, Blake..." They both froze. Anna pressed a hand over her trembling lips. Blake exhaled, something deep and unguarded flickering in his eyes as he looked at her - really looked at her. Without overthinking, he reached for her hand again. She didn't pull away. Their fingers laced together naturally. Softly. Inevitably. They both looked down at Jay - peaceful, safe, dreaming. A small family in the making. Jay's soft breathing filled the room again, the kind of peaceful rhythm that always made Anna's heart loosen. She brushed a thumb over the back of his hand, watching his small fingers twitch gently in sleep. Blake watched both of them - Anna first, then Jay - with a quiet, unreadable intensity. Their hands were still intertwined under the thin blanket. Blake didn't move. Anna didn't either. It felt natural. Too natural. After a moment, Blake spoke quietly, as if afraid to break the fragile calm in the room. "He feels safe," he said, voice low. Anna nodded. "He's had so few opportunities to feel that way." "You give him safety," Blake said. "You always have." Anna looked down, fighting a wave of emotion. "I try." "No," Blake said softly but firmly. "You do more than try. You carry him. You protect him. You sacrifice everything for him. That's not trying - that's love." Her throat tightened painfully. "And you," Blake continued, voice lowering even more, "deserve someone who protects you too." Anna swallowed hard. "It's just been us for so long... I never expected anyone else to fit into our world." Blake's eyes flickered to Jay, then to their intertwined fingers. "I'm not trying to fit," he murmured. "I'm choosing to be here." Anna's breath stilled. "Blake..." "I meant what I said earlier," he added quietly. "About not leaving." Anna looked at him, searched him - for sincerity, for hesitation, for anything that contradicted what he was saying. She found nothing except truth. Real, raw truth. Her lips parted helplessly. "You're different this morning." Blake's mouth curved slightly. "Am I?" "Yes," she whispered. "You're... softer." "Only with you," he murmured. Anna's cheeks warmed. But before anything else could spill between them, Jay shifted in his sleep and reached blindly toward Anna. She adjusted his blanket, tucking him in gently. Blake watched the movement with a strange mixture of admiration and something deeper - yearning, affection, protectiveness. It was all written there in the slight relaxation of his jaw, the softening of his gaze. After a moment, Jay settled again. Anna leaned back slightly, exhaling. Blake turned his head toward her. "You're tired." "A little," she admitted. "It's been... a long few weeks." Blake let out a quiet breath, thoughtful. "Come here." "Hm?" Anna blinked. Blake shifted closer on the narrow couch, lifting his arm slightly. "Lean on me." Anna's heart thumped. "Blake-" "You haven't rested properly," he said quietly. "Just... for a minute." Her chest fluttered nervously. But she was tired - desperately tired - and the warmth in his voice made the decision feel easier. Slowly, cautiously, she leaned toward him. Blake wrapped his arm around her, guiding her head gently to his shoulder. Anna inhaled sharply at the contact. He smelled like expensive cologne, soap, and something warm that felt comfortingly familiar already. His heartbeat was steady beneath her ear - firm, solid, grounding. Blake's hand hesitated at her upper arm for a moment, as if asking permission silently. Anna relaxed. That was all he needed. His fingers settled lightly, protectively, drawing her closer. "Better?" he whispered. Anna nodded against him. "Mm." They stayed like that for a long moment - warm, close, quiet. Anna felt her eyes drifting shut, exhaustion catching up to her. Blake rested his chin lightly atop her head, careful not to move too much. "You should sleep," he murmured. "I will," she breathed, "just... stay like this." "I'm not going anywhere," he whispered back. Her heart thumped again. It wasn't just words. He meant it. Slowly, her breathing evened out. The adrenaline faded. Her muscles finally relaxed. She slipped into a light doze, comforted by Blake's warmth and Jay's quiet breathing. Blake held her carefully - not too tight, not too loose. Just enough to let her know she was safe. A nurse walked in quietly for routine checks, paused at the sight of them, and smiled softly before backing out without a sound. Blake barely noticed. He kept his eyes on Anna - her relaxed lips, the tiny wrinkle above her eyebrow that finally smoothed out as she fell deeper asleep. He brushed a gentle finger along a strand of hair near her cheek, carefully tucking it behind her ear. She sighed softly, nestling closer. Blake froze - then melted. He whispered under his breath, too soft for even himself to fully hear: "Anna... what are you doing to me?" --- Later - When Anna Woke Up Anna stirred slowly, blinking as the world came back into focus. She realized her cheek was against something warm and firm. Something steady. Blake. Her head jerked slightly. Blake looked down instantly. "Easy." Her eyes widened. "Did I... did I sleep on you?" Blake nodded, amusement tugging at his lips. "For almost an hour." "Oh my God," she whispered, covering her face. "Relax," Blake said softly. "It was nice." Anna peeked through her fingers. "You're not serious." "I'm very serious." His tone softened. "You needed it, Anna." She blushed, lowering her . "I didn't mean to-" "You don't have to apologize to me," Blake said. "Ever. Not for resting. Not for needing support." His words struck her right in the chest. Before she could respond, Jay yawned loudly. "Why is everyone talking?" he mumbled. Anna laughed softly. "Are you awake?" Jay nodded and sat up a little, rubbing his eyes. "Blake, did you sleep here too?" Blake chuckled. "No. But Anna did." Jay brightened instantly. "Good! You both look better." Anna shook her head, flustered. "Jay, please-" Jay ignored her and looked directly at Blake. "So... when can we pack our things?" Anna groaned. "Jay!" Blake's smile widened - slow, warm, almost teasing. "Soon," he said. "Very soon." Anna's heart dropped to her stomach, then soared. Jay threw his hands up triumphantly. "Yes! I knew it!" Anna covered her face again. Blake leaned closer to her, his voice low and warm in her ear. "Get used to it," he murmured. "He's already decided we're keeping you." Anna's breath caught. He didn't say him. He didn't say Jay. He said we. We're keeping you. Anna's entire world tipped. Softly, shyly, almost inaudibly, she whispered back: "Maybe I want to be kept." Blake froze. Then exhaled - slowly, deeply - as if the ground had shifted beneath him. And maybe it had.
