THE CONFRONTATION

3326 Words
Anna stood outside Jay's hospital room, her hand resting on the cold metal handle, her heartbeat drumming like a nervous warning inside her chest. She had gone out for just a few minutes-just a breath of fresh air, just a moment to clear her thoughts after the chaos of the last few days. She never expected to return and find him inside. Blake Harrington. The man she had been trying so hard to forget. The man she had left her job for. The man who had humiliated her in front of the entire company. And yet... the man whose touch she never stopped feeling. The man whose memory lived on her skin. She swallowed hard and pushed the door open. Jay looked up first, his small face lighting with a rare, bright smile. "Anna!" But Anna wasn't looking at Jay. Her eyes found Blake immediately. He was sitting beside Jay's bed-his tall body bent slightly as he held two puzzle pieces in his hands. His expensive suit jacket was draped over the chair behind him, sleeves rolled up to his elbows, revealing those strong, defined forearms she remembered all too well. His dark hair fell slightly forward, and he looked up at her like he'd been waiting... or maybe hoping. The room went dead silent. Jay looked between them, confused by the sudden tension. Anna didn't know what to say. Blake didn't look away. His eyes-those stormy blue eyes-locked onto hers, and it hit her like a physical force. The pain. The longing. The regret. All of it was there. Finally... Blake broke the silence. "Jay and I were, uh... just playing puzzles," he said softly, as if afraid any louder tone might scare her away. Anna blinked, stunned. "...Puzzles." Jay lifted the puzzle piece he had been holding. "He's good at it, Anna! He finished the edge pieces fast-fast!" Blake smiled-an actual smile-before glancing back at her, waiting, testing the waters. Anna inhaled deeply, remembering why she left the room in the first place. She needed clarity. She needed air. And Blake being here suddenly stole all the oxygen around her. "Jay," she said gently, "can you give us a moment? I need to talk to... him." Jay's eyes flicked to Blake. "Are you coming back?" "Yes," Blake answered immediately, surprising her with how soft his tone became. "I'll come back." "Okay!" Jay chirped, already returning to his puzzle. Anna stepped aside, motioning Blake out of the room. He rose slowly-almost cautiously-as if afraid she might vanish if he moved too quickly. He followed her into the hallway, neither of them speaking as they made their way toward the cafeteria. The hospital corridors hummed with distant noise-beeping machines, hushed conversations, squeaking wheels-but between them, there was only a suffocating, heavy silence. They walked side by side, close but not touching, each step filled with words unsaid. When they reached the cafeteria, it was half full, early afternoon light spilling across the tables. Anna chose a quiet corner, far from curious eyes, and Blake sat across from her. Still, they didn't speak. Anna kept her gaze on her hands. Blake kept his on her face. Seconds stretched into long, stretching minutes until finally... Anna's voice cut through the thick air. "How did you even find me, Blake?" His jaw clenched. His eyes lowered for a moment before lifting back to hers. "I... looked at your personal details from the office files." Anna stilled. He watched her reaction closely-like he expected her to explode, or walk away, or cry. Instead, she remained quiet, absorbing it. He didn't feel proud. He didn't feel justified. He just looked guilty... and desperate. Silence returned-a different kind this time. It wasn't anger. It was the weight of something neither could escape. Blake exhaled and leaned forward, folding his hands on the table. "Anna..." She lifted her eyes. "I'm sorry." Her breath caught. "I'm sorry for everything," he continued, voice thick. "For being cold. For humiliating you. For not letting you speak. For... all of it." She blinked rapidly, stunned by the sincerity in his tone. "I acted like an i***t," he said. "A jealous idiot." Anna's eyebrows shot up. "...Jealous?" "Yes." There was no hesitation. She stared at him in disbelief. "Why would you be jealous?" Blake looked away briefly, rubbing the back of his neck like he was embarrassed. "Because... I overheard you the night you waited at my place." Anna's eyes widened. "You were on the phone," he explained. "Talking about someone waiting for you... someone you were coming home to." He swallowed. "I thought you had a man." For a moment, Anna was so shocked she couldn't speak. Then- A small laugh slipped out. Then another. Until she was laughing completely, softly but uncontrollably. Blake's brows knitted, confused, helplessly watching her. "Anna...?" "Oh my God," she said between breaths, "Blake-Blake, that was Jay calling. I was talking about Jay! I don't have any man." He froze. "None," she repeated, calming down. "I haven't been with anyone... for a long time." Something shifted in Blake's expression. A quiet, overwhelming relief. A joy he didn't bother hiding. His chest rose slowly, like he was breathing properly for the first time in months. "I... judged you unfairly," he murmured. "I made assumptions with no proof. And I hurt you. I'm sorry." She softened. She couldn't help it. Blake wasn't cold now. He wasn't arrogant. He wasn't the CEO speaking to an employee. He was a man, sitting across from the woman he had pushed away, trying to find a way back. He took a breath, bracing himself. "Anna... I love you." Her heart stopped. "I love you," he repeated, firmer this time. "I want you back in my life. In the company. With me." Anna felt her entire body go warm-from her chest to her fingertips. She had imagined this moment, dreamed about it, prayed silently for it... but never believed she would actually hear it. "Blake..." Her voice trembled. Not with fear- But with happiness. A happiness she hadn't felt in so long. "I love you too." His breath hitched-actually hitched-and the look on his face was pure disbelief, followed by something raw and beautiful. Before she knew how it happened, Blake leaned across the table, cupped her cheeks in both hands, and kissed her. Deep. Slow. Hungry. Like a man starving for months finally tasting the one thing he craved. Anna kissed him back with the same desperation, her fingers gripping his shirt, pulling him closer. Someone in the cafeteria gasped. Someone giggled. A few people whispered. But neither of them cared. They drowned in the kiss-in relief, in love, in everything they had been holding back. When they finally pulled apart, breathless, Blake rested his forehead against hers. "I'll take care of both of you," Blake said softly, his forehead still resting against hers, his breath warm and unsteady. "Whatever it takes. Whatever you need. I'll make it happen." Anna felt her heart squeeze, a mixture of relief and disbelief swirling inside her chest. For so long she had carried everything alone-the stress, the bills, the work, Jay's care, the endless hospital visits. She never expected anyone to step in. Never expected anyone to offer. And certainly not him. "Blake..." She whispered his name the way someone whispers a prayer they're afraid won't be answered twice. But he lifted her chin gently with his thumb. "I mean it," he said, eyes locked on hers, voice steady even though his hands trembled slightly. "I'm not going to let you carry everything alone anymore." Anna swallowed hard, tears threatening behind her eyes. "You don't have to-" "I want to." His voice was firm, almost urgent. "Not out of guilt. Not out of pity. Out of love." The word hit her again. Love. Blake Harrington loved her. And sitting here, in the middle of a hospital cafeteria of all places, with people still pretending not to stare, she felt something she hadn't felt in years: Safe. He brushed a strand of hair behind her ear, his fingers lingering against her cheek. "I'm sorry I didn't see you sooner. I'm sorry I misjudged you. I'm sorry I let my own feelings cloud my judgment." Anna shook her head slowly, placing her hand over his. "It's okay. I should have explained, too." "You tried," he murmured. "I shut you down before you had the chance. That was on me." She laughed lightly. "You were a bit dramatic." He blinked. "A bit?" She lifted an eyebrow. "Okay-a lot." Blake couldn't help a small, embarrassed laugh, running a hand through his hair. "I was jealous. I'm not proud of it." "I could tell," Anna teased softly. "You were supposed to think I was cold and professional," he muttered. "You failed miserably." He smiled. The first real, unguarded smile she'd seen on him in a long time. "You always ruin my plans." "Good." He laughed again-quiet, breathy, but real-and took her hand across the table. His thumb slowly stroked over the back of her palm, as if memorizing the feeling of her skin. For a moment, neither of them spoke. Neither needed to. But then Blake's voice dropped to a serious whisper. "Anna... I mean what I said. I want you back. At the company. And in my life." Her breath caught again-not in fear this time, but in the comfortable shock of happiness. "I don't want to lose you," he continued. "I don't want to pretend we're nothing. And I don't want to keep acting like what happened between us was some mistake." Anna looked down, her thumb tracing a small invisible circle against his skin. "I don't think it was a mistake." Blake leaned closer. "Then come back." She looked up at him again, her eyes shimmering. "You're really giving me another chance? After everything?" Blake frowned slightly, shaking his head. "No. You're giving me a chance." That did it. A tear escaped. She let out a shaky laugh and wiped it quickly. Blake's face softened painfully at the sight. "Anna..." "I'm just..." She sniffed quietly. "I'm just happy. I didn't expect any of this." "I should have done this earlier," he whispered. "It's okay," she murmured. "You're here now." "And I'm not going anywhere," he promised. "Not again." Her chest warmed. She squeezed his hand gently. "Okay." "Okay?" Blake repeated softly. She nodded. "I'll come back. I'll... come back to the company. And to you." Blake's exhale was shaky, relief crashing through him so visibly she almost laughed. "Thank God." Then-unable to help himself-he leaned in, kissed her again, slower this time, savoring her lips as though trying to brand her into memory. Anna kissed him back, smiling into it, her hand sliding up to his cheek. Someone in the cafeteria clapped. Someone else giggled. A nurse passing by whispered, "Aww, how cute." But Blake didn't care. Anna didn't care. They stayed like that for a moment longer before Blake finally pulled back, his thumb brushing her lower lip gently. "I never want to hurt you again," he murmured. "You won't," she whispered back. He nodded, squeezing her hand. "And Jay... I'll handle everything about his care. I'll make sure he gets the best." Anna let out a breath she didn't know she had been holding. "Thank you." "I'll talk to the hospital director myself," Blake added. "He'll have the best specialists, private therapy sessions, upgraded room, everything." Anna stared at him, overwhelmed. "Blake, that's... that's a lot." "You're worth it," he said simply. Her heart fluttered. Silence settled again, but this time it was warm, intimate-comfortable. A few minutes passed before Blake finally sat back and asked, "Do you want to go back to Jay?" Anna nodded. "He's probably wondering where we are." "Then let's go together," Blake said quietly. "I promised him I'd come back." Anna smiled, standing up as Blake rose with her. They started walking side by side again, this time closer than before. Their hands brushed... then intertwined naturally. When they reached Jay's room door, Anna paused and looked up at Blake. "Ready?" she whispered. Blake smirked softly. "For him? Yes." "For us?" she teased gently. He looked at her like she was air-something he could not live without. "For us..." He lifted her hand to his lips and kissed it. "I've been ready for a long time." Anna's smile grew, soft and full of warmth. Then she opened the door, and they stepped inside together. Jay looked up the moment the door opened. His eyes-bright, curious, and always searching-shifted from Anna to Blake, then to their joined hands. Anna felt Blake subtly squeeze her fingers, silently asking if she wanted to let go. She didn't. If anything, she held tighter. Jay blinked once... twice... and then his entire face stretched into a wide, knowing smile. "You came back!" he said, pointing excitedly at Blake, his voice ringing through the room. Blake chuckled softly, stepping closer to the bed. "I promised, didn't I?" Jay nodded eagerly. "We weren't done with the puzzle!" Anna smiled faintly. Jay rarely attached to people quickly-he often withdrew into himself or preferred being alone-but here he was, excited... engaged... happy. Blake... made her brother happy. That alone tugged at her heart. Blake released her hand gently and walked to Jay's side. "Let's finish it." Jay patted the space beside him on the bed, and Blake-CEO Blake, billionaire Blake, hard and intimidating Blake-actually sat carefully on the edge, the mattress dipping under his weight. Anna leaned against the wall, watching quietly. For a moment she forgot the world existed. It was just Jay's small hands fumbling with puzzle pieces... ...and Blake's large hands guiding him patiently. "Put this blue one there," Blake said softly, pointing. "See? It matches the ocean." Jay's eyes widened. "It does!" "Perfect," Blake praised him warmly, ruffling his hair. Jay beamed. Anna felt her chest squeeze again. Blake wasn't pretending. He wasn't forcing kindness. He was naturally gentle with Jay, patient in a way that even some family members never were. Jay picked up another piece and held it out. "Your turn, Blake!" Blake's lips curved. "Okay... but I'll only place it if Anna approves." Anna blinked, surprised. "Approve what?" "The piece," Blake said, lifting the puzzle chip like a man asking for permission to enter her world. Jay giggled. "Say yes!" Anna laughed lightly, rolling her eyes. "Yes, Blake." He placed the piece in the puzzle like it was a ceremony. Jay clapped happily. "We're a team!" Anna felt the words hit harder than she expected. A team. Something she hadn't felt in years. Blake turned to look at her, his expression softening in a way only she got to see. "Yeah," he said quietly. "We are." Her throat tightened. Jay didn't notice the emotional exchange. He was too busy selecting the next piece. "Anna, come sit with us!" Anna hesitated for a split second, but Jay was already patting the other side of the bed excitedly. "Sit, sit, sit!" Blake shifted slightly to give her space. She sat down, careful not to disturb any wires or the small medical table attached to the bed. Jay handed her a puzzle piece. "Your turn." Blake looked between the siblings-Jay happy and talking, Anna smiling softly-and something inside him settled, like a puzzle piece in his own life finally clicked. A quiet moment passed, warm and soft. Then Jay asked, "Anna, is he staying?" Anna blinked. Jay rarely asked questions like that. He rarely cared about someone staying or leaving unless he had formed a quick attachment. The fact that he asked... Blake answered before she could. "If she lets me," he said gently. Jay looked at Anna. "Let him." Anna felt her eyes sting. She swallowed a breathe and nodded. "He's staying." Blake's expression shifted-something deep, something emotional, something close to gratitude. Jay beamed. "Good!" They continued the puzzle for several minutes, but Anna couldn't help watching Blake, and Blake couldn't help stealing soft, secret glances at her. Eventually Jay's attention drifted, as it often did. He started humming to himself, his fingers playing with the puzzle pieces absentmindedly. Anna leaned closer to Blake and whispered, "Thank you. For being kind to him." Blake turned his head slightly, his voice barely above a whisper. "I care about him." Anna's heart warmed. "Already?" Blake looked at her the way men look at things they want to protect. "He's your family. That makes him important." Anna couldn't hold back the soft exhale that escaped her. "Blake..." He reached for her hand under the blanket, hidden from Jay's sight, his thumb brushing slow circles across her palm. Her breath quickened. His eyes softened further. Jay didn't notice. He was busy making "house sounds" for the puzzle picture. Blake leaned even closer. "We still have a lot to talk about. About us. About work. About... everything." Anna nodded subtly. "I know." "You're sure you want to come back?" he murmured. She met his gaze. "Yes." "And you're sure," he whispered, "you meant what you said earlier?" Anna blushed softly, her voice low and warm. "That I love you?" Blake inhaled sharply-quietly-like he was still stunned by hearing it. "Yes," he whispered. "I meant it, Blake." His fingers tightened around hers under the blanket. "You have no idea what hearing that does to me." She smiled gently, her chest full. "And you have no idea what hearing everything you said today did to me." His eyes flickered with something darker, deeper-emotion wrapped with desire. But Jay suddenly looked up, interrupting the moment. "Anna, Blake is the boss?" Anna stiffened slightly, but Blake smiled. "Yes, Jay. I'm the boss." Jay tilted his head. "Of puzzles?" Anna laughed so loudly she had to cover her mouth. Blake chuckled. "No, not puzzles." "Of what?" Jay asked. Blake thought for a moment. "Hmm. I help people do their work." Jay nodded like that made absolute sense. "Then you are the work-boss." Blake grinned. "I guess I am." Anna shook her head, smiling. Jay had no clue how accurate that was. Jay added, "If he's the work-boss, does that make you the boss-girl?" Anna blinked. Blake smirked. "Yes. She's definitely the boss-girl." Anna swatted his arm lightly. "Don't encourage him." Jay giggled. But in that moment-seeing Jay laugh, seeing Blake relax, seeing the three of them together-Anna felt something shift deep inside her. Hope. Possibility. A future she never dared to imagine. Eventually, Jay's laughter quieted. His movements slowed. The long day finally caught up with him. He began rubbing his eyes, blinking heavily. Blake noticed immediately. "He's getting tired." "Yeah," Anna whispered. "He needs to rest." Jay looked up sleepily. "Blake... don't go yet." Blake looked at Anna softly. She nodded. "I'll stay until you sleep," Blake whispered. Jay laid down slowly, curling onto his side, his fingers still touching one puzzle piece as if guarding it. Anna fixed his blanket while Blake dimmed the room light. Jay mumbled softly, "Goodnight, Anna... goodnight, Blake..." Blake brushed his fingers gently through Jay's hair. "Goodnight, buddy." Anna watched the tenderness in Blake's eyes and felt her heart melt all over again. Jay drifted off slowly, his breathing evening out. The room fell into a soft, peaceful silence. Blake stood beside Anna , both of them watching her brother sleep. Anna whispered, "You're really staying?" Blake slid his hand into hers again. "I'm not going anywhere," he murmured. "Not from him... and definitely not from you." " Do you want to get out of here? I mean.... Somewhere more private." Anna asked. " Depends on what the private is" Blake teased, gathering her into his arms. " I really want to touch you and do crazy things to you, but, I don't want Jay waking up and neither of us is around." " He won't, we'll be quick." Anna replied, stepping closer into his embrace. " Are you sure about that?" " Definitely." Anna nodded, tracing her hand on his lower lip.
