The Cracking Seal

*Chapter 15: 🔥🔥The Cracking Seal🔥🔥* *{Joseon Palace, Records Office Basement}* The air tasted like copper and old smoke. General Han Tae-wook pushed himself off the floor, wiping blood from his mouth. “I’m starting to hate this place.” Inspector Yoo didn’t answer. He was staring at the file in his hands. *Min Jae-hyun. Royal Keeper.* The ink was faded, but the seal under it was still sharp. Four lines through a circle. The fourth seal. Seo-yeon knelt beside him. Her shadow stayed low, trembling against the floor. “What does it say?” she asked. “Names,” Yoo said quietly. “Twelve names. All dead. All marked for the purge.” He didn’t say the last part out loud. _All your father’s people._ Seo-yeon’s throat tightened. “And?” “And under each name,” Yoo said, “there’s a date. Forty years ago. The night the purge happened.” The clerk’s body lay still a few feet away. His eyes were open, empty. The Shadow Man had left him like a discarded tool. Tae-wook spat on the floor. “So he’s been planning this since before I was born.” “Longer,” Yoo said. “The fourth seal was made to hold him. If it breaks, he walks free.” From deep in the archive came a sound. A low groan, like stone shifting under weight. Seo-yeon’s shadow hissed. “Run,” Yoo said. They didn’t argue. Tae-wook grabbed Seo-yeon’s arm and hauled her up. Yoo took the file and shoved it inside his coat. The basement was coming apart. Shelves cracked. Dust fell in thick sheets. The symbol on the floor flared red for a second, then went dark. Something on the other side of the door had noticed them. ***{Joseon Palace, Inner Court Corridor}*** They burst out into the corridor coughing. Lady Yoon was waiting with two guards. She looked up when they came out, eyes wide, face pale with worry. “Inspector? What happened?” “We need to move,” Yoo said. “All of you. To the queen’s wing. Now.” Yoon didn’t ask why. She just nodded and waved the guards forward. Her hands trembled slightly. Tae-wook kept his sword out. “You sure she’s okay?” Yoon caught the look. She lowered her eyes, voice small. “I’m fine, General. It wasn’t me.” “I know,” Tae-wook said. He didn’t sound happy about it, but he didn’t accuse her either. Seo-yeon walked beside Yoon. Her shadow clung to her leg like it was afraid to let go. “Lady Yoon,” Seo-yeon said quietly. “If anything happens again… scream.” Yoon managed a small smile. “I will, Lady Min.” _Scream,_ Yoon thought. _And you’ll come running. Just like he said._ ****{Joseon Palace, Queen’s Wing}**** The queen’s guards stopped them at the door. “General Tae-wook,” the lead guard said. “You can’t bring her in there.” “She’s with me,” Tae-wook said. “She’s a prisoner.” Tae-wook stepped forward. “Try and stop me.” The guard didn’t move. He knew better. Yoo stepped between them. “Open the door. The queen needs to hear this.” The door opened. Queen Hye-won was standing by the window, watching the inner court. She turned when they entered. Her eyes went to Seo-yeon first, then to Yoon’s bruised temple, then to the blood on Tae-wook’s sleeve. “What happened?” she asked. Yoo bowed. “Your Majesty. We found evidence that the purge files were falsified. The Royal Keeper, Min Jae-hyun, was not a traitor. And something in the palace is trying to break the fourth seal.” The queen went still. “Explain.” Yoo laid the file on her table. “The Shadow Man is using palace staff. Possessing them. He tried to take Lady Min in the locked room. He tried again in the records office. He’s close.” Queen Hye-won looked at Yoon. “You were possessed?” Yoon dropped to her knees, eyes wet. “I don’t remember, Your Majesty. I’m sorry. I would never—” “It’s not her fault,” Seo-yeon said quickly. “He used her. Like he uses everyone.” The queen studied Yoon for a long moment. Then she nodded. “Rise, Lady Yoon. You’ve served the palace for twenty years. I know your face.” Yoon exhaled like she’d been holding her breath for days. _Perfect. They trust me._ “Minister Han Seong-jo,” the queen said. “Where is he?” “Lower cells, Your Majesty,” Tae-wook said. “He refused to leave.” “I’ll send Captain Han Myeong-jun to bring him,” the queen said. “If anyone knows how this started, it’s him.” ****{Joseon Palace, Lower Cells}**** Captain Han Myeong-jun walked alone down the stairs. The guards had been pulled for the inner court. The lower level was empty. Silent. He stopped at Minister Han Seong-jo’s cell. Minister Han was sitting on the floor, eyes closed. “They’re coming,” Minister Han said without opening his eyes. Captain Han unlocked the door. “Then we’re leaving.” Minister Han stood up. “I’m not running.” “You’re coming with me,” Captain Han said. “The queen wants answers.” Minister Han looked at him for a long time. Then he nodded. As they walked up, Minister Han spoke quietly. “The Shadow Man isn’t one man, Captain. He’s a name people use when they’re afraid. But the man behind it… he’s old. Older than the palace.” ****{Joseon Palace, Queen’s Wing}**** Minister Han Seong-jo was brought in, chains still on his wrists. He bowed to the queen, then looked at Seo-yeon. “You look like your father,” Minister Han said. Seo-yeon stepped forward. “You knew him.” “I knew all of them,” Minister Han said. “The Royal Keepers. The twelve families. We were supposed to guard the seals.” “Why didn’t you?” Tae-wook asked. Minister Han’s eyes were flat. “Because we were betrayed. From the inside.” The room went quiet. Yoo’s hand went to the file in his coat. “Who?” the queen asked. Minister Han looked across the room. His eyes passed over Lady Yoon, then stopped on Yoo. “The spymaster,” Minister Han said. “Spymaster S.M. Your predecessor, Inspector Yoo. He opened the first seal. He killed the other keepers. He blamed it on my father.” Tae-wook cursed. Yoo felt like the floor had dropped out from under him. “My predecessor?” he said. “He’s been dead for ten years.” “Dead men don’t stay dead when the Shadow Man calls them,” Minister Han said. The lights in the room flickered. The temperature dropped ten degrees in a second. From outside the door came a voice. Not Minister Han’s. Not Yoo’s. Older. Colder. _“You talk too much, Keeper.”_ The door exploded inward. **{Joseon Palace, Queen’s Wing Hallway}** The guards fell back, shouting. A man stood in the doorway. He looked like the clerk from the records office. Same face. Same clothes. But his eyes were wrong. And his shadow didn’t move with him. _“Min Seo-yeon,”_ the Shadow Man said through the clerk’s mouth. _“You’re late.”_ Tae-wook moved. The clerk’s shadow rose up and threw him across the room. Yoo pulled Seo-yeon back. Minister Han stepped forward, chains rattling. “You want her,” Yoo said. “You’ll go through me.” The Shadow Man laughed. It wasn’t the clerk’s laugh. _“Good,”_ he said. _“Let’s finish this.”_ The hallway went dark. ****{Joseon Palace, Queen’s Wing}**** Seo-yeon’s shadow surged up, wrapping around her like armor. She felt something inside her wake up. Something old. Something angry. The fourth seal was cracking. And she could feel it. “Seo-yeon,” Yoo said. “Don’t—” “Too late,” she said. The blue candle in her pocket lit itself. The Shadow Man stopped. For the first time, he sounded unsure. _“What are you?”_ he asked. Seo-yeon smiled. It wasn’t her smile. “I’m the last keeper,” she said. Behind her, Lady Yoon stood perfectly still. Her eyes were clear. No fear. No tears. _Soon,_ she thought. _Soon I won’t need to pretend._ The palace screamed.
